Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8 ~ THE HUNTER’S TAIL

Lucifer's POV

The ride back was quieter and more intimate.

His hand never left mine, his thumb brushed slow circles against my skin like he needed the reassurance.

I leaned back slightly, watching the city again, smiling but something felt… Off.

Like the atmosphere shifted.

"Hey," Sebastián said softly. "You okay?"

I turned slightly and I nodded. "Yeah."

A lie but a convincing one.

I could feel it deep in my bones that something wasn't right... I don't know what but I could feel it and before I could make sense of it, the driver spoke.

Calmly... "Sir…"

Sebastián's head lifted slightly. "What is it?"

There was a pause, then he said... "I think we are being followed."

Everything inside me went still, cold, sharp and alive all at once.

Sebastián's grip on my hand tightened slightly.

"What?" he said.

My gaze shifted subtly to the side mirror and true to his word, I saw it... A black car was right behind us, keeping its distance but I needed to make sure he was actually following us.

"Make the next turn." I ordered.

"Yes ma'am."

I watched as the driver did and just like that, the car behind made the turn too.

"Make a left turn." I ordered again.

The car behind made the turn foolishly confirm everything. He was too consistent and too intentional... Definitely following us.

My pulse slowed instead of rising... Danger did that to me, it focused me.

Sebastián looked at me. "What... what do we do?"

I didn't answer immediately because my mind was already ten steps ahead. Thinking about all the recent happenings and now... This?

I leaned slightly forward, eyes locked on the mirror.

"…Interesting," I murmured.

Because whoever has been on my case lately has been coming really haRd, obviously prepared for war which is good because when I strike? It would be fucking hard.

Sebastián frowned. "Sabrina...?"

I turned my head just enough to meet his eyes and for the first time tonight... I was no longer Sabrina, I was in Lucifer mode.

"Don't panic," I said calmly.

The car behind us didn't speed up and it didn't slow down... It just followed quietly behind Lila a fucking hunter.

My lips curved slightly. "Who the hell are you?"

I sat back into the leather seat, posture relaxed, expression calm... like nothing had shifted, like we weren't being followed and like the night hadn't just taken a sharp, dangerous turn.

But my eyes? They were alive, watching.

I tilted my head slightly, gaze flicking toward the side mirror again... That's when I caught it.

The plate.

Not fully at first... Just numbers, then letters.

My gaze sharpened quickly, locking in... I repeated it in my head a couple of times for it to stick.

I leaned forward slightly, pulling my phone from my clutch like I was checking a message and thankfully, Sebastián didn't question it.

He was too busy trying not to look worried.

I sent a quick text to Red.

RED: Run this plate for me: KJX-4729. I need everything. Now.

I hit send, then slipped my phone back like nothing happened.

"Driver," I said calmly.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Lose him."

"Okay ma'am." He said. "Understood."

Without hesitation, he swung into action... The car didn't speed up immediately.

No... That would have been obvious.

Instead, the driver made a smooth turn, too smooth to raise suspicion, then another, then a longer stretch and then... He sped off.

We slipped through traffic like a blade through silk... The driver did great with the calculated acceleration, the sudden lane shift and even the timed merge just before a light changed.

I watched the mirror the entire time.

The car behind us tried... I will give him that but our driver was just great.

Three minutes... That's all it took.

Just three minutes and the tail was gone.

I leaned back slowly, tension easing from my shoulders but not disappearing, it never disappeared... Beside me, Sebastián wasn't as composed.

He kept glancing back, his body tight, his jaw clenched slightly like he was trying to stay calm but failing, which is understandable.

This wasn't his world, this wasn't normal for him.

"Sabrina…" he said quietly.

I turned my head toward him.

He looked at me like he was trying to read something deeper, like he knew there was more to the car that was following us a while ago.

"It's gone," I said simply.

"That doesn't mean it's over," he replied.

I studied him for a second, then...

"Relax," I said, softer this time. "I got you."

His eyes searched mine and for a moment… I could tell he believed me.

"I know," he said. "But who the hell was that? And why are they following us?"

I paused briefly and held his gaze.

"No idea," I lied smoothly. "But I will find out."

And when I do? God help them.

...

The rest of the ride passed in a quieter tension... The tension was heavy.

The kind that sits between two people who both know something's wrong but only one of them understands how bad it really is.

I kept my eyes on the window again, watching reflections instead of the road until we pulled into Sebastián's place not long after.

The car came to a smooth stop but neither of us moved immediately.

Then I exhaled softly as he finally reached for the handle.

"Thanks for tonight," I said.

His head snapped toward me.

"What?" he asked, confused. "You are not coming in?"

I paused, looked at him and I hated that he was giving me a disappointed look.

Honestly, that look almost made me stay.

Almost.

"I would like nothing more than that," I said honestly. "But I need to handle the… stalker situation."

His expression shifted. It's obvious he understood the importance of me leaving.

"Right," he murmured.

He stayed quiet for a while before talking again.

"Fine," he said, nodding slightly. "Stay safe… and call me."

I smiled faintly. "I will."

He leaned in slowly and kissed me... It was soft at first, then it got deeper, like he needed reassurance and I let him.

For a moment… I let myself relax.

Then I pulled back but not completely, just enough.

He rested his forehead briefly against mine.

"Be careful, baby," he murmured.

"I always am."

He didn't argue, he just gave me one last look... Then stepped out of the car.

The door shut and just like that... Sabrina faded and Lucifer stepped back in.

My phone buzzed... Perfect timing.

I glanced down and noticed it was a text from from Red.

RED: I have got the information you need.

Of course he did... I nodded as I typed back immediately.

RED: Good. I am on my way.

"Driver," I said, voice colder now.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Take me to the warehouse."

"Yes, ma'am." he said.

The car pulled out smoothly, leaving Sebastián behind and I leaned back into the seat, eyes dark, mind already moving.

I was curious, fucking curious about the guy bold enough to step into my world... But the mistake he made was messing up because now there was no way in hell he was getting out untouched.
