Chapter 23 - “ The One Behind Them ”

They didn't notice it on the way back.

Not on the path.

Not when the clearing disappeared behind them.

Only when the silence didn't leave.

At first, nothing felt different. The terrain shifted back to what they had crossed before—uneven ground, scattered structures, the same empty stretch that should have felt familiar by now.

But something stayed.

Not sound.

Not movement.

Presence.

Ryo felt it first.

Not clearly.

Not enough to name it.

Just enough—

to stop.

Ren noticed immediately.

"…what?"

Ryo didn't answer right away.

His eyes didn't move toward anything specific. Not the path. Not the structures. Just… slightly off. Like he was trying to focus on something that wasn't fully there.

"…we're not alone."

The words didn't come out loud.

But they didn't need to.

Taro's expression tightened.

"…you're not joking, right?"

Ryo shook his head once.

"…no."

That was enough.

They didn't stop walking.

That would've been worse.

Daisuke spoke quietly, without turning.

"…don't change pace."

They followed that immediately.

No hesitation.

Because if something was there—

they didn't want it to know they knew.

The path stretched ahead, unchanged.

But now—

every step felt heavier.

Aiko moved slightly closer to Mei.

"…can you feel it?"

Mei didn't answer right away.

Her gaze shifted once, carefully, scanning without making it obvious.

"…something's wrong."

Not confirmation.

But close enough.

Taro let out a slow breath.

"…yeah, I hate this even more now."

They kept walking.

Nothing moved around them.

No sound followed.

No shadow shifted.

And that—

was the problem.

Because whatever it was—

it wasn't careless.

Ryo's focus shifted again.

Behind them.

Not directly.

Just enough to feel the space.

Still there.

Same distance.

Not getting closer.

Not falling back.

Watching.

Ren spoke quietly.

"…it's keeping pace."

Ryo nodded slightly.

"…yeah."

That confirmed it.

Not coincidence.

Intent.

Daisuke's voice came again.

"…don't engage."

Taro frowned.

"…we're just gonna ignore it?"

A pause.

"…for now."

That answer didn't feel complete.

But it felt right.

Because if it wanted to attack—

it already would have.

The thought didn't make it easier.

If anything—

it made it worse.

Aiko glanced back slightly.

Not enough to fully turn.

"…I don't see anything."

Ren responded.

"…you're not supposed to."

That settled in.

The presence wasn't hiding.

It just wasn't showing.

Ryo slowed for half a second.

Then stopped.

Not fully.

Just enough.

The feeling—

shifted.

Closer.

He stepped forward again.

It moved back.

Maintained distance.

Daisuke saw it.

"…it's reacting."

Aiko shook her head slightly.

"…no."

A pause.

"…it's adjusting."

That difference mattered.

Because reacting meant instinct.

Adjusting meant thought.

Taro let out a quiet laugh.

"…great. So now we're being followed by something smart."

No one replied.

Because that wasn't wrong.

They reached the edge of the abandoned zone.

The structures became clearer again.

More solid.

More familiar.

The space should've felt safer.

It didn't.

Because the presence—

came with them.

Ryo stopped again.

This time—

fully.

Daisuke turned slightly.

"…why?"

Ryo didn't look back.

"…it's still there."

Silence.

Taro's voice dropped.

"…all the way here…?"

Ryo nodded once.

"…yeah."

That confirmed it.

Whatever it was—

it wasn't tied to the clearing.

It had chosen them.

Mei's gaze hardened slightly.

"…then it's not guarding."

Ren finished it.

"…it's observing."

That word stayed.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Because it changed everything.

They weren't just moving through something anymore.

They were being watched inside it.

Ryo turned slightly this time.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Nothing.

Empty space.

Still air.

But the feeling—

remained.

Unmoving.

Constant.

Then—

for a moment—

it shifted.

Closer.

Not much.

Just enough.

Ryo's grip tightened slightly.

Taro noticed.

"…what happened?"

Ryo's voice came lower.

"…it moved."

That was new.

Ren's posture changed immediately.

"…distance?"

"…closer."

Silence.

Daisuke stepped forward slightly.

Not toward it.

Between.

"…we leave."

No hesitation.

They moved.

Faster this time.

Not running.

But no longer slow.

The structures passed by them quickly, the path becoming clearer as they pushed forward. The base wasn't far now. Familiar ground. Familiar space.

But the feeling—

didn't fade.

It stayed.

Right behind them.

Constant.

Controlled.

Watching.

As they reached the boundary where the abandoned zone met the safer grounds, the presence stopped.

Ryo felt it.

Immediately.

Gone.

Not vanished.

Just—

no longer following.

He stopped.

Turned.

Nothing.

Empty.

Like it had never been there.

Taro exhaled.

"…don't tell me it just left."

Ryo didn't answer.

Because it didn't feel like leaving.

It felt like—

enough.

Ren looked back once.

"…it came this far."

A pause.

"…on purpose."

Mei added quietly.

"…and stopped where it wanted."

That meant something.

They didn't say it out loud.

But they all understood.

This wasn't random.

This wasn't coincidence.

This wasn't over.

As they stepped fully out of the zone, the air felt lighter.

Normal.

Almost.

But one thing stayed with them—

Whatever had followed them—

had seen enough.

For now.
