Chapter 5 - Duel at Dawn

The courtyard was hushed in the pale light of dawn. Apprentices gathered in a wide circle, their breath misting in the cool air. Word of the duel had spread quickly; even servants and minor nobles had come to watch. The Silver estate's banners fluttered in the breeze, and the tension was thick enough to choke on.

Xavier stood at the edge, shifting nervously, while Kael Draven strode in with the confidence of a conquering hero. Kael's staff gleamed with runes, his robes immaculate. Xavier, by contrast, looked like he'd just rolled out of bed and stumbled into a nightmare.

Master Orlin twirled his umbrella like a baton. "Students! Today, chaos and order shall dance. May the best philosophy win."

Xavier muttered, "Or may I survive without summoning breakfast."

The Challenge

Kael raised his staff, runes glowing faintly. "Xavier Silver. Yesterday you mocked me with bread and butterflies. Today, you will face real power."

Xavier forced a grin. "Bread is power. Haven't you heard of carbs?"

The apprentices laughed, but Kael's glare silenced them. He pointed his staff at Xavier. "No tricks. No comedy. Fight me."

Orlin clapped his hands. "Begin!"

First Exchange

Kael unleashed a torrent of fire, roaring across the courtyard. Xavier panicked, raising his hands. Energy surged, and a massive pie appeared, steaming and golden. The fire hit the crust, sizzling harmlessly. The pie remained intact, radiating warmth.

The crowd erupted in laughter. "He's a baker!" someone shouted.

Xavier groaned. "I swear I'm not doing this on purpose."

Kael's face twisted with rage. "Enough!"

Escalation

Kael conjured a storm of stone shards, sharp and deadly. Xavier flinched, releasing another spell. A flock of pigeons appeared, swooping through the air. The shards bounced harmlessly off their wings, scattering in all directions. The pigeons cooed triumphantly, strutting across the courtyard as if they owned it.

Orlin clapped. "Marvelous! You have transformed destruction into… urban wildlife!"

Xavier muttered, "I'm going to be remembered as the guy who weaponized pigeons."

The Turning Point

Kael snarled, summoning a towering elemental of fire and stone. The creature roared, advancing on Xavier. Apprentices gasped, some stepping back in fear. Xavier's heart raced. He raised his hands, desperate. Magic surged, and a spell burst forth.

The elemental froze, then slowly began to juggle. Flames flickered as it tossed boulders into the air, catching them with surprising grace. The crowd roared with laughter, some applauding as if they were at a festival.

Kael's jaw dropped. "What—what is this?"

Xavier grinned weakly. "I call it… performance art."

Orlin was ecstatic. "Brilliant! You have turned a weapon into entertainment!"

Kael's Fury

Humiliated, Kael screamed, pouring all his energy into a final spell. Lightning crackled, fire blazed, stone shattered. The courtyard shook. Apprentices stumbled back, shielding their eyes. Even Orlin's umbrella trembled in his hands.

Xavier braced himself, releasing his magic in desperation. A shimmering barrier appeared… then morphed into a giant mirror. The storm of Kael's fury reflected back at him, striking with full force. Kael was thrown to the ground, his staff clattering away.

The courtyard fell silent.

Aftermath

Kael lay stunned, his pride shattered. Xavier stood trembling, staring at the mirror. "I… I did that?"

Orlin clapped furiously. "Marvelous! You have reflected not only his magic, but his arrogance!"

The apprentices erupted in cheers and laughter. Some shouted Xavier's name, others called him "The Baker of Veloria." Xavier groaned. "Great. My legacy is carbs and pigeons."

Family Reaction

Later that day, the Silver family gathered in the estate. Alaric smirked. "Well, little brother, you survived. And you humiliated Kael again. Twice in two days. Impressive."

Lysander laughed. "You're unstoppable. As long as your enemies fear baked goods."

Lady Seraphina frowned. "This rivalry is dangerous. The Dravens will not forgive this."

Lord Darius's voice was stern. "You are a Silver. You must learn control. But… today, you showed resilience. Perhaps chaos has its uses."

Xavier blinked. "Did you just compliment me? I think the world is ending."

Orlin's Wisdom

Orlin appeared, twirling the umbrella. "You see, Xavier? Chaos unsettles order. Kael expected fire and fury. You gave him pies and pigeons. He cannot prepare for what he cannot imagine."

Xavier sighed. "He also can't forgive me for making him look ridiculous."

Orlin chuckled. "Good. Let him stew. Chaos is not weakness. It is unpredictability. And unpredictability is power."

Crowd Rumors

By evening, Veloria buzzed with gossip. Apprentices reenacted the duel in taverns, laughing as they mimicked Kael's fury and Xavier's absurd defenses. Merchants joked about selling "Silver's Shield Pies." Children chased pigeons through the streets, pretending to be magicians. Some whispered that Xavier's chaos was no accident—that it was tied to an ancient prophecy. Others dismissed him as a clown.

Xavier overheard it all, groaning. "I'm going to be remembered as the world's first magical baker."

Closing Beat (Varied Perspective)

Far across Veloria, Kael Draven sat in his chamber, bruised and humiliated. His father's voice echoed in his mind: Crush him. But Xavier had humiliated him again, turning his fury into farce. Kael clenched his fists, eyes burning with hatred.

"This isn't over," he whispered. "I'll destroy him. No bread, no butterflies. Next time, he won't laugh."
