Chapter 6 - Secrets Behind the Smile

The city outside never slept, but inside the loft, silence pressed heavily against the walls. Amara sat on the edge of a worn leather chair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, still trembling from the earlier attack.

Landon stood near the window, looking out at the rain-slicked streets, his expression unreadable. The faint glow of neon reflected off his sharp features, making him look almost untouchable—like danger had taken human form.

"I need to know," Amara said softly, breaking the silence. "Everything about you. Why the attacks? Why me? And… who are you really?"

He turned slowly, eyes locking onto hers. "Some truths are dangerous," he said, his voice low, almost a growl. "And once you know them, there's no going back."

Her chest tightened. Every instinct screamed that knowing too much could ruin her, yet curiosity—and something darker, hotter—drove her forward. "I need to know. I can't be just… a passenger in my own life."

He studied her, and for the first time, she saw vulnerability flicker in his dark eyes. "Very well," he said. "But you asked for this. Know that it's not a story with a happy beginning."

He took a step closer, his presence overwhelming. "I've lived in shadows for most of my life. My family… my past… it's all bound by secrets, enemies, and mistakes. One wrong move, one misplaced trust, and people die. I've lost too much already."

Amara's breath caught. "Then… why me? Why care about me?"

For a moment, Landon's mask cracked. His shoulders slumped slightly, and his eyes softened—not the dark predator she'd seen before, but a man carrying scars she couldn't even imagine.

"Because you're not like the others," he said quietly. "You see things… you feel things… and somehow, you make me want to protect you—not because I have to, but because I want to."

Heat surged through Amara at his words. Her instincts screamed danger, yet a part of her body betrayed her with longing. She stepped closer. "And… do you want more than protection?"

His eyes darkened, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. "I want… everything you'll let me have. But every second near you is a risk—yours and mine."

A sudden noise—a soft click from the loft door—made them both tense. Landon moved instantly, pulling her behind him. A shadow slipped past the doorframe, a figure she couldn't clearly see, but the danger was unmistakable.

Amara's pulse raced. Her heart hammered—not just from fear, but from the closeness of Landon's body, the heat of his presence, the unspoken promise of passion and peril.

When the figure finally fled, Landon exhaled and held her gaze. "You see? There's no safe way to be near me. But somehow… you keep stepping closer."

Amara's lips parted, and she realized with a shiver: she didn't care. The danger, the secrets, the fire burning between them—it was all too intoxicating to resist.

In the shadows of the city, under neon lights and whispered threats, one truth became undeniable: their hearts were entwined, and nothing—no secret, no enemy, no danger—could stop it.
