Chapter 2 - THE UNKNOWNS

Nile and Noa gathered their essentials, the weight of their new steel a constant reminder of the journey ahead. Outside, their grandparents stood waiting to see them off. The morning air was crisp, but the weight of the unknown hung heavy between them.

"By the way, I have a question," Nile said, breaking the silence as he adjusted his pack.

"What is it?" Hiroshi asked, his voice steady.

"Where are we actually going?"

Without a word, Hiroshi raised his hand, pointing a weathered index finger toward the horizon. "There."

In the far distance, a colossal mountain pierced the clouds. It was so massive and so distant it looked more like a shadow than solid earth.

"What the..." Nile muttered, the air escaping his lungs. He took a deep breath, centering himself, and looked Hiroshi in the eye. "We'll reach it. Just pray for us."

Hiroshi offered a rare, thin smile. "That's the spirit."

The Crowded Streets

The siblings turned their backs on the only home they had ever known. After hours of trekking, the quiet of the countryside gave way to the roar of the city. The streets were choked with people.

Nile pushed through the throng, Noa following closely in his wake. They reached the edge of a plaza just as a military parade began to march past. The rhythmic thud-thud-thud of boots on cobblestone echoed against the buildings. Nile watched with wide-eyed excitement, but his heart jumped when a soldier in the ranks snapped his head toward him, offering a cold, piercing glare.

"That guy..." Nile whispered, a chill running down his spine. He turned to Noa, trying to shake the feeling. "I think we should eat. We need to recover our strength for the road."

A Lesson in History

They found a small stall and claimed a cramped wooden bench. As Nile waited for their order, the hushed conversation of two men at the next table caught his ear.

"Did you hear?" one whispered. "The Border Wars are finally ending."

Nile leaned in, his curiosity getting the better of him. "Excuse me," he interrupted, "but what exactly are the 'Border Wars'?"

The two men paused, looking Nile up and down before exchanging a glance and bursting into a condescending giggle. Nile felt the heat of embarrassment creep up his neck.

One of the men finally sighed, leaning back. "Let me explain, kid. A Border War is a conflict that bleeds between two nations right at their edges. It's ugly, it's constant, and it's finally over."

Nile listened intently, soaking in the information, completely oblivious to Noa's growing irritation. She nudged him once. Twice. Finally, her patience snapped and she delivered a sharp pinch to his arm.

"Ow! What was that for?"

He saw that the food was ready. He started to eat.

"You should finish your own food," he suggested Noa. But when he glared at her bowl, she had already finished.

Nile scrambled to finish his meal, realizing he was falling behind. As soon as he swallowed the last bite, he stood up and wiped his mouth. "Right. Let's go."

The Silent Woods

By late afternoon, the city's noise had been swallowed by the dense canopy of a nearby forest. Here, the world was eerily still. The only sound was the rhythmic crunch of dried leaves beneath their boots.

The air felt heavy. The shadows grew long.

Suddenly, the silence was shattered. The sound of something heavy rushing through the undergrowth tore through the trees, heading straight for them.
