Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: “Shadows in the City"

The morning sun glinted off glass towers, casting long shadows across the streets. Jin Tae-Hyuk walked cautiously, every sense alert, his eyes scanning the bustling city. Every honking horn and screeching tire made him flinch; every throng of people seemed like a potential threat. And yet… something was off.

He could feel a faint trace of Qi in the air, elusive yet undeniable. It wasn't the chaotic energy of the city, nor the mere presence of ordinary humans. This was… different. A pulse, a small, hidden aura buried under the noise of modern life.

Tae-Hyuk's steps slowed. He ducked behind a column of concrete, unseen by the crowds, and narrowed his eyes. Across the plaza, a man moved. At first, he seemed normal, blending seamlessly with office workers and pedestrians. But then, in a blink, he disappeared behind a corner and not like someone simply walking fast. His movement was too fluid, almost instantaneous, leaving a faint shimmer in the air that Tae-Hyuk's trained senses immediately picked up.

Qi… Tae-Hyuk thought. Yes… that is Qi. Someone is hiding it, but I can feel it.

He crouched lower, observing a delivery man hefting a crate with unnatural strength, the glow of faint Qi dancing around his fists, invisible to everyone else. Another figure stepped lightly across a fountain, moving with uncanny grace, blending into the crowd like a shadow. Tae-Hyuk's heart raced.

Martial artists..... They have not vanished.

He continued through back alleys, keeping his distance, noting every anomaly. A group of men gathered outside a martial arts gym, but their movements were strange, calculated, precise, even ritualistic. One struck a training dummy in a flurry of strikes, and Tae-Hyuk instinctively recognized the form: a combination of core formation techniques he had learned in his sect. But no one else seemed to notice, and the men quickly dispersed into the city's chaos.

Every flicker of Qi, every graceful leap, every hidden technique it all confirmed what he had feared and hoped at once. Murim had adapted. They moved in plain sight, invisible to the common eye, hiding within the structures of a modern society.

By mid-afternoon, Tae-Hyuk found a quiet park at the edge of the city. The trees and grass were foreign, tame compared to the wild mountains he had known, but it was enough space for him to experiment. He spread his legs into a fighting stance, closed his eyes, and drew Qi from within.

He moved. He leaped. He struck. The flow of his body was still smooth, still powerful but… something was wrong.

Without mountains to vault, rocks to use, or uneven terrain to gain leverage, his techniques felt restrained. Each strike, though precise, lacked the devastating force he was accustomed to. His sword arm, swinging in the air, carried no weight, no resistance. Even his Qi, though potent, seemed dulled by the alien surroundings.

I am… limited here. Tae-Hyuk muttered to himself, frustration curling in his chest. This world is different. I cannot fight as I used to. I must learn… or I will perish.

He practiced for hours, leaping from benches, striking lampposts, running along concrete edges, testing his movement. The city provided challenges he had never imagined, slippery pavements, uneven metal surfaces, reflective glass that confused his depth perception. And yet, he adapted slowly, the discipline ingrained into him from years of training keeping him sharp.

As dusk fell, Tae-Hyuk's sharp eyes caught movement at the edge of the park. A figure emerged from the shadows a blur moving faster than any normal human. The faint glimmer of Qi around the person flickered as they dodged around lamp posts, disappearing and reappearing in ways that defied logic.

Tae-Hyuk crouched low, unseen. Are they from the orthodox sects… or perhaps someone from the Demonic Cult? he wondered. There was no way to tell from the distance. But the presence itself set his instincts on edge.

And then, even farther across the street, a group of three individuals moved in synchronized steps, their hands gesturing in subtle signs as they executed a complex martial technique against invisible opponents. They blended into the crowd, yet Tae-Hyuk's trained eyes traced every movement, recognizing mastery far beyond ordinary humans.

The factions… They are here. Living among the people.

He realized that in this modern world, Murim had hidden itself not in mountains, not in temples, but in the very fabric of society. Corporations, gyms, schools, and even underground fight rings were all masks, all fronts for hidden power.

Tae-Hyuk's heart beat faster. I am not alone… but neither am I safe. If I wish to survive, I must adapt as well. I must understand this world… its rules, its limits, and its masters.

He stretched out his hands, letting Qi flow again, feeling it surge stronger now after hours of experimentation. Tomorrow… I will explore further. I will discover who these hidden warriors are. And I will find a way to master this world.

Even in the fading light, the faint shimmer of hidden Qi continued to flicker around him, unnoticed by ordinary humans but undeniable to him.

The city was alive with secrets.

And Jin Tae-Hyuk was just beginning to uncover them.
