Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Breaking Point

POV: Isabella

The world around me felt like it was closing in. Every day spent in Dominic's world, I felt the weight of it pressing down on me more. What had seemed like a lifeline, a chance to save my family, was quickly becoming a labyrinth of tension and danger. I had thought I could handle it—the power, the secrets, the constant movement. But now, I wasn't so sure.

The first few days after the ritual had passed in a blur. The moment we shared, the bond that had formed between Dominic and me, was still fresh in my mind. His touch, his gaze, everything about him had been so raw, so intense. I had tried to ignore the feelings that stirred inside me, but it wasn't easy. Every time I was near him, I felt the pull, that invisible thread that tugged me closer.

But now? Now, things were different. The game had changed. And I was no longer just fighting for my family's survival. I was fighting for my place in Dominic's world.

Vera's shadow loomed large in the corners of my mind. Every time I saw her—every time she crossed my path—I felt it. The tension. The jealousy. The lies she spread like poison. She wanted Dominic. She always had. But I didn't expect the lengths she would go to in order to tear us apart.

It wasn't just about the ritual. It wasn't just about one night. It was about the life that Dominic and I were now tangled in, a life that was filled with danger, with secrets, and with betrayal. Every time I saw Vera's cold eyes, every time I heard her whispers, I knew I was one step closer to being lost in this world forever.

I stood in the garden that night, staring out into the vast, empty darkness. The mansion behind me felt like a fortress—imposing, impenetrable, and cold. The wind rustled through the trees, carrying with it the faint scent of rain. The sky above was dark, heavy with the promise of a storm. I welcomed it, hoping it would wash away the uncertainty that clung to me.

The sound of footsteps behind me broke the silence, and I turned to find Dominic approaching, his presence filling the space around me. I didn't speak immediately. What was there to say? The distance between us had grown, not physically, but emotionally. Every time I thought I understood him, something else came to light—something that made me question everything I had believed.

"Isabella," Dominic's voice was soft, almost cautious. "You shouldn't be out here alone."

I wanted to respond, to say something—anything—but my words felt heavy, like they were caught in my throat. The last time we had spoken, everything had been so clear. There had been a promise, a connection, a bond. But now? Now, there was doubt. Doubt about him. Doubt about what this was between us.

"I'm fine," I said quietly, my voice barely above a whisper. "Just thinking."

Dominic moved closer, his presence almost overwhelming. He stood beside me, his shoulder brushing mine, but it wasn't enough. The space between us felt wider now than it ever had before.

"You've been thinking about Vera, haven't you?" His question caught me off guard, and I glanced up at him, surprised by how accurately he had read me.

I didn't answer immediately, unsure of how to phrase the truth. I had been thinking about Vera—about the way she watched us, about the things she had said. She had made it clear that she wasn't going to back off. But what worried me more was how Dominic seemed to let her influence him, how he was still holding back. He was fighting something inside him, but I wasn't sure what that something was.

"I don't trust her," I finally said, my voice steady despite the unease that churned in my stomach. "I don't trust what she's doing, what she's saying."

Dominic's jaw clenched, but he didn't look at me. Instead, he stared ahead, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his jacket. "I know she's been trying to manipulate you," he said, his voice cold. "But you don't have to worry about her. I won't let her come between us."

His words should have been reassuring, but something in the way he said them made me uneasy. There was a distance in his tone, a wall he had built that I couldn't seem to climb over. I wasn't sure what it was, but I knew it was there.

"I don't know if I can trust you either," I blurted out before I could stop myself. The words hung in the air between us, thick with meaning.

Dominic's eyes flicked to mine, a flicker of something—hurt, maybe?—crossing his face before he masked it with his usual cool composure. "I've never lied to you, Isabella," he said, his voice low. "I've never promised you anything I didn't intend to keep."

But his promises were the problem. The more I heard them, the more they seemed to mean nothing. How could I believe him when everything around me—Vera, the mafia, the pack—was a constant reminder of the danger that surrounded us?

I took a step back, the cold air biting at my skin, and suddenly, I felt it—the danger. The looming threat that had been present since I first agreed to this deal. The price of saving my family was never going to be easy. I had known that. But the cost of being in Dominic's world was something I hadn't fully realized until now.

I was afraid. Afraid of losing myself, afraid of the things I was being asked to accept. Dominic's world wasn't just filled with danger; it was filled with lies, with manipulation, with people who would do anything to stay in control.

"I'm not sure I can do this anymore," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the wind. The words felt like a release, like I was letting go of something I didn't know how to hold onto.

Dominic's face hardened, his jaw tightening. "You don't have to do this alone," he said, his voice full of promise. "I'm here."

But was he? Was he truly here, or was I just another thing for him to protect? Another burden on his shoulders, another piece of his world he couldn't let go of? The more I saw him, the more I realized that the man I was falling for was a stranger—a man whose past haunted him, whose heart was locked away in pieces I couldn't reach.

The storm in the distance grew louder, the thunder rumbling in the sky. It felt like a warning, like the world was about to shift, and we were caught in the middle of it.

Cliffhanger/Retention Hook:

Before I could say anything else, a loud crash came from the mansion's side door. The sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway, and a familiar voice rang out. "Dominic!"

I turned toward the sound, my heart racing. What now?
