Chapter 2 - PRE-LOGUE

Prelude – The Fall of the Ashford Pack

The night was alive with fire and screams. Shadows danced across the Ashford estate as Lyla's dark magic tore through the pack's defenses. Khalil Jace Ashford clung to his sister Mira, barely able to comprehend the chaos around him. The air smelled of smoke and blood, a scent he would never forget.

"Stay close to me!" Khalil shouted, his voice trembling but determined. His small hands gripped Mira's tightly as they ran through the collapsing corridors of their home. Behind them, their father, Ronan Ashford, roared in defiance, teeth bared, commanding the pack against impossible odds.

"Mother!" Khalil cried, searching desperately for Selene, his witch mother, as fire and shadows converged. But she was there only for a moment, casting protective wards, before a surge of dark magic from Lyla struck her down. She fell silently, her eyes locking with Khalil's for a heartbeat. A silent plea. A promise.

Meredith's voice broke through the chaos. "This way! Quickly!" she urged, sweeping Khalil and Mira into her arms as she fled into the forest. The children's small legs stumbled over roots and rocks, exhaustion and fear weighing them down, but Meredith's grip was unyielding. She would not let them fall.

Behind them, the estate burned. Ronan's roar of defiance echoed one last time before silence claimed the night. The pack… gone. Their parents… gone. Only the forest, dark and endless, remained.

For days they wandered, surviving on whatever Meredith could find. Hunger gnawed at their bellies, fear clung to every step, and yet she kept them moving, whispering words of hope that felt almost like magic themselves. Khalil's eyes, dark and observant even in his youth, noticed everything—the way shadows shifted unnaturally, the way his instincts stirred within him. Something deep inside knew: he was meant for more than survival.

But the night had changed everything. Their world had ended. And the promise of a future, one whispered in shadows and blood, waited silently in the moonlight, waiting for the day it would be fulfilled.
