Chapter 9 - TOO CLOSE TO IGNORE

The rest of the day felt heavier than usual.

Not because of the lessons…

But because everything had changed.

Amara sat quietly, staring at her notebook.

But she wasn't reading.

Her mind was elsewhere.

Her father's words kept repeating:

"It's time to come back home."

"You're thinking too much."

Kian's voice pulled her back.

Amara didn't look at him.

"I always think."

Kian leaned slightly closer.

"No… this is different."

A short silence followed.

Amara finally spoke:

"You should stay out of this."

Kian didn't move.

"I already told you… I'm not leaving."

That answer made her pause.

She slowly turned to look at him.

"Why?"

Kian held her gaze.

For once… he didn't answer immediately.

Then he said quietly:

"Because you don't push everyone away the same way."

Amara frowned slightly.

"I push everyone away."

Kian shook his head.

"Not me."

Silence.

That moment felt… different.

Closer.

Amara looked away first.

"You're making things complicated."

Kian smiled faintly.

"I think they were already complicated."

After school…

The sky was calm, painted with soft evening colors.

Amara walked out slowly.

But this time…

She didn't walk alone.

Kian was beside her.

Not following.

Not forcing.

Just… there.

"You didn't tell me everything," he said.

Amara sighed softly.

"I told you enough."

Kian stopped walking.

Amara took a few steps before noticing.

She turned back.

"What?" she asked.

Kian looked at her seriously.

"Are you in trouble?"

That question hit differently.

Amara hesitated.

For the first time…

She didn't have a quick answer.

"…It's complicated," she finally said.

Kian stepped closer.

"How complicated?"

Their distance closed.

Just a little.

But enough.

Amara's heartbeat shifted slightly.

Not fear.

Something else.

"You shouldn't get involved," she said softly.

Kian's voice lowered too.

"And if I already am?"

Silence.

The world around them seemed to fade for a moment.

Amara looked into his eyes.

And for the first time…

She didn't see curiosity.

She saw concern.

Real concern.

"…You don't understand what this could bring," she whispered.

Kian replied without hesitation:

"Then help me understand."

Another pause.

Amara's walls…

For a brief second…

Cracked.

"My family…" she started.

"…is not just rich."

Kian listened carefully.

"There are expectations. Control. Decisions that are already made for me."

Her voice became quieter.

"I wasn't supposed to choose this life."

Kian's expression softened.

"So you ran."

Amara looked down slightly.

"…I left."

Kian stepped even closer now.

"Same thing."

A small silence.

Then he said:

"You don't look like someone who runs."

Amara looked up again.

"And you don't look like someone who stays out of trouble."

Kian smiled.

"Maybe that's why I'm here."

That made her almost smile.

Almost.

But then—

A phone buzzed.

Amara checked it.

Her expression changed instantly.

Serious.

Kian noticed.

"What is it?"

Amara locked her phone.

"…Nothing."

Kian frowned slightly.

"That didn't look like nothing."

Amara stepped back.

Her walls were back up again.

"I have to go."

She turned and started walking away quickly.

"Amara—"

She didn't stop.

Kian stood there, watching her leave.

Again.

But this time…

It felt different.

Because now he knew:

She wasn't just hiding a secret.

She was running out of time.

At a distance…

Brielle stood under a tree, watching everything.

Her expression was calm.

But her eyes were sharp.

"So that's how it is…" she murmured.

She glanced at her phone.

A message was open.

"Everything is ready."

Brielle smiled slowly.

"Let's see how long you can keep your perfect mask…"
