Zoey emerges from the restricted area, her gaze darting around the waiting room without settling on any of us. Her nervous energy is palpable, drawing me to my feet. I approach her while the others trail behind, but something about her demeanor sets off alarm bells in my head. The need to see Riley with my own eyes gnaws at me relentlessly. Everyone's been frustratingly tight-lipped about what happened, offering no details about her condition. All we know is she's somewhere behind those doors, but the reason remains a mystery.
"Zoey, what's the situation? Are we allowed to see her now?"
Mason's voice carries a desperation I rarely hear from him. He's falling apart, like someone's deliberately keeping him from the woman he loves. While I don't have the emotional bandwidth for anger right now, I desperately need confirmation that she's going to be alright. Zoey's eyes drop to the floor, avoiding our questioning stares.
