Caleb's POV
We race to the hospital and find the first parking spot available. My hands shake as I slam the car door shut. The receptionist behind the front desk takes one look at our faces and her expression softens with sympathy. She explains that Zoey is still in surgery and we cannot see her yet. The words hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
We settle into the sterile waiting room with its uncomfortable plastic chairs and fluorescent lighting. The antiseptic smell makes my stomach turn. Soon my parents arrive, followed by Zoey's parents. Their faces are etched with the same worry and fear that I feel consuming me from the inside out. Everything around me feels surreal, like I am trapped in some horrific nightmare. I keep hoping I will wake up in my bed with Zoey beside me, safe and sound. I would rather wake up to find her gone than face this reality.
