Riley's POV
Caleb's eyes never leave me, tracking every breath I take like he expects me to stop breathing at any moment. Part of me wishes I would. The memories from that night keep crashing over me in waves, bringing with them the crushing weight of reality. Mom is gone. The confirmation came not from words, but from her absence. She would have moved heaven and earth to be by my side right now if she could. The empty chair beside my hospital bed tells me everything I need to know.
She's dead because of me. Because of whatever twisted game my father has been playing. He claimed Mom hid me away for years, but why? Did she know what kind of monster he really was? What other secrets was she keeping? The questions circle in my mind like vultures, each one more painful than the last.
