Caleb's POV
The guard stationed outside Riley's house is one of my father's most trusted warriors. Victor has eyes like a hawk and reflexes to match. There's no way I can slip past him undetected, so I decide on the direct approach.
"Evening, Victor." I stride up to him with as much confidence as I can muster.
He studies me with those sharp eyes, then breaks into a knowing grin. "Well, well. Caleb." His voice carries amusement. "What brings you here at this hour?"
My pulse quickens. Lately, anything involving Riley makes me feel like a nervous teenager instead of a future pack leader. "Riley asked me to stop by. Said it was important."
It's a weak lie, but it's all I have. Victor's eyebrows rise skeptically.
"Interesting. Her mother specifically mentioned no more visitors tonight." His tone is casual, but I can see he's testing me.
