What Wasn't Written in the File
She didn't move.
Her eyes remained fixed on him, as if trying to read beyond his features.
This man… had appeared at the worst possible moment,
acting like he knew more than he should.
"Give me the file."
She snatched it quickly, yanking it from him nervously.
"That's enough. Who are you? And why are you acting like you're part of this story?"
He raised an eyebrow slightly, as if her reaction didn't surprise him.
"Because I am."
She fell silent.
The answer wasn't reassuring… far from it.
"That doesn't explain anything."
He sighed lightly, casting a quick glance around.
The side street was quiet… too quiet.
"Not here."
"I'm not going—"
"Then stay."
He cut her off coldly.
"And wait until they find you."
She froze.
Instinctively, she looked behind her, expecting them to appear any moment.
She cursed herself silently.
"One minute," she said quickly. "Just one minute. Explain what's happening."
He stepped closer.
"You read the document, right?"
She hesitated… then nodded.
"Yes."
"All of it?"
"Yes."
A beat of silence.
Then he spoke softly:
"Then you're a target now."
Something inside her trembled.
"Because of a paper? That makes no sense."
"It's not a paper."
He leaned closer, his voice dropping lower:
"The names in it… they should never exist together in one place."
A shiver ran down her spine.
"What names? There was nothing obvious—"
"Exactly."
He cut her off.
"Because they're coded."
She froze.
"What?"
He reached for the file, but this time she didn't hand it over easily.
"There are symbols, numbers, dates… they look random."
"But they're not."
She hesitated… then flipped through the pages quickly.
"This? Just financial transactions."
"Look closely."
He moved closer, pointing to one of the lines.
"The date here…"
Then to another line:
"And the name here…"
Then whispered:
"Try reading the first letter of each line."
She stopped.
Slowly, her eyes traced the letters…
Letter… by… letter…
Then—
Her eyes widened suddenly.
"This… is a name?!"
He didn't answer.
But his gaze said enough.
A well-known person.
Someone who shouldn't be tied to anything illegal.
Her breaths quickened.
"This is impossible…"
"Yet it's right in front of you."
He closed the file quietly.
"Now you understand why they're after you."
She stayed silent.
This was no longer a case.
This was a disaster.
She looked at him, this time with full seriousness:
"Who are you?"
He stared at her for a few seconds… as if deciding.
Then said:
"Someone who was trying to take them down… before you got in the way."
She froze.
"What does that mean?"
He took one last step closer.
"It means…"
He paused, then continued:
"You are now the problem… and the opportunity, all at once."
