Chapter 1 - Logged In, Zone Out

The city never really slept—but it pretended to.

From the 14th floor of their glass-walled apartment, the lights of the tech district flickered like a restless constellation. Inside, two minds sharper than most of the machines they built lived in quiet contrast.

Rushi and Umang.

Both brilliant. Both engineers. Both capable of bending logic to their will.

But only one of them was slowly breaking.

Rushi sat hunched over his monitor, the bluish glow painting tired shadows under his eyes. Lines of code reflected in his glasses, but his mind wasn't in them. It hadn't been for days now.

Umang noticed.

He always did.

"Bro," Umang called from the couch, controller in hand, "either that code is writing itself or you're staring at it like it owes you money."

Rushi didn't respond immediately. His fingers hovered over the keyboard, unmoving.

"Just… thinking," he muttered finally.

Umang narrowed his eyes but didn't push—yet.

Later that night, they were both sprawled in front of the TV, immersed in a fast-paced multiplayer game. Explosions filled the room. Quick decisions, sharp reflexes—this was their element.

Or at least, it used to be.

"YES!" Rushi exclaimed suddenly.

Victory flashed across the screen.

He had won.

But something was off.

No smile. No smug comment. No playful jab at Umang.

Just silence.

Umang lowered his controller slowly. "You won… and you look like you lost your job."

Rushi shrugged. "It's just a game."

"That's illegal. You never say that."

Still nothing.

That's when Umang leaned forward, his tone shifting. "Okay. Enough. What's going on with you?"

Rushi exhaled, long and tired. "I don't know, man. Everything feels… pointless. Work, games, even winning… it's like it doesn't hit anymore."

Umang studied him for a moment. Then suddenly stood up.

"I've diagnosed the issue," he declared.

Rushi raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? What's your expert conclusion?"

"You," Umang said dramatically, pointing at him, "need a life update. Specifically—a date."

Rushi almost laughed. Almost. "No."

"Too late."

Before Rushi could react, Umang snatched his phone.

"Hey—what are you doing?"

"Saving your mental health," Umang replied, already tapping away. "Step one: download all the dating apps known to mankind."

"Umang, give it back."

"Relax. I'll make you look mysterious. Girls love that."

Within minutes, profiles were created. Photos selected. A bio crafted with just enough intrigue to be dangerous.

Umang handed the phone back with a grin. "Now swipe."

Rushi looked at the screen like it was a puzzle he didn't want to solve.

Swipe left.

Swipe left.

Swipe left.

Each face blurred into the next. Smiles, poses, captions—they all felt… empty. Artificial.

"This is pointless," Rushi muttered.

"Keep going."

"Why?"

"Because statistically, not everyone can be terrible."

Rushi sighed and kept swiping, his thumb moving almost mechanically.

Left.

Left.

Left.

Then—

A slip.

His thumb hesitated for a fraction too long and slid right.

Match.

Rushi froze.

"What?" Umang leaned over instantly. "You matched?! Who is she?"

Rushi stared at the screen.

Her name: Aadhya.

Her photo was simple. No filters screaming for attention. Just a quiet, steady gaze into the camera.

But it was her bio that made his chest tighten slightly.

"No psychological chaos."

Rushi blinked.

Umang chuckled. "That's oddly specific."

Rushi's grip on the phone tightened. "I didn't mean to swipe right."

"Too late, Romeo."

"I should unmatch."

But he didn't.

For some reason, that one line echoed in his head.

No psychological chaos.

As if she had drawn a boundary before even saying hello.

As if she knew exactly the kind of storm she didn't want.

And Rushi…

Rushi suddenly became very aware of the storm inside him.

"I shouldn't have done that," he murmured.

Umang smirked. "Or maybe… you just did something right for the first time this week."

The screen stayed lit between them.

The match sat there—quiet, waiting.

And for the first time in days, Rushi didn't look away.
