Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The One Who Knocks Back

The door pulsed.

Red light spilling into the corridor.

…KNOCK…

Aarav stood still.

Breathing slow.

Heavy.

Behind him—

Mira.

Silent.

Watching.

In front of him—

The only way out.

His chest felt… empty.

The knocking—

Almost gone.

Time was ending.

"…continue… or remain…"

The voice echoed again.

Aarav closed his eyes.

For the first time since it began—

He stopped running.

Stopped panicking.

Stopped fearing.

He thought.

The knocks.

The door.

The copies.

The system.

Mira.

"…you said you chose wrong…" he whispered.

No answer.

But he didn't need one.

Aarav opened his eyes slowly.

"…what if leaving… isn't the right choice…?"

The corridor went still.

Even the presence seemed to pause.

Mira's eyes widened slightly.

"…Aarav…"

He turned to face her.

For the first time—

Calm.

"If one leaves… and one stays…"

A pause.

"…then someone always loses."

Mira's breath caught.

"That's the system."

The copy smiled faintly.

"That's the balance."

Aarav shook his head slowly.

"No."

The word echoed.

Firm.

Certain.

"That's the trap."

Silence.

Even the whispers stopped.

Aarav stepped away from the door.

Mira froze.

"…what are you doing…?"

He looked at her.

"…changing the rules."

The copy's smile faded.

"That's not possible."

Aarav's eyes darkened slightly.

"You said it yourself."

A step forward.

"I opened the door."

Another.

"I answered."

The corridor trembled.

"And now…"

The knocking returned.

Stronger.

Louder.

But not from his chest.

From everywhere.

KNOCK… KNOCK… KNOCK

Aarav stood still.

"…so I choose too."

The presence stirred.

The walls cracked.

The doors shook violently.

"YOU DO NOT CHANGE THE SYSTEM."

The voice roared.

Aarav didn't move.

"…watch me."

The copy stepped forward.

"You don't understand what you're doing—"

Aarav turned to it.

"…I understand enough."

A pause.

"Someone has to stay."

Silence.

Mira's voice broke—

"…no…"

Aarav looked at her one last time.

A faint smile.

"…not you."

Her eyes widened.

"Aarav, don't—"

Too late.

He stepped forward.

Not toward the door.

But toward the corridor.

Toward the endless doors.

Toward the darkness.

The knocking exploded.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

The presence roared again—

"YOU CHOOSE TO REMAIN?"

Aarav's voice was steady.

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

The corridor changed.

The doors stilled.

The whispers faded.

Everything… calmed.

Mira fell to her knees.

"…why…?"

Aarav's body began to fade.

Slowly.

But his voice remained.

"…because someone has to answer the knock."**

The light from the door behind them changed.

Not red anymore.

Normal.

Warm.

Real.

Mira looked up.

The exit.

Open.

Free.

Her breath shook.

"…you gave it to me…"

Aarav didn't answer.

He was already fading.

Becoming part of the corridor.

Part of the system.

Part of the Door.

The presence spoke again—

Quieter now.

Almost… curious.

"WHAT ARE YOU?"

Aarav's final words echoed—

"The one who knocks back."

Darkness consumed him.

Mira stood alone.

The corridor—

Gone.

The doors—

Gone.

The whispers—

Gone.

She was back.

In the real world.

Her world.

Her room.

Silent.

Safe.

But her hands trembled.

Her chest tightened.

Tears fell silently.

"…Aarav…"

That night—

At exactly 12:03 AM—

She heard it.

KNOCK… KNOCK… KNOCK

Mira froze.

Her breath stopped.

Slowly…

She turned toward the wall.

Silence.

Then—

A whisper.

Soft.

Familiar.

"…you heard me first."

Mira's eyes filled with tears.

A broken smile formed.

"…Aarav…"

The knocking came again.

Not asking to come in.

Not trying to escape.

But answering.
