Chapter 1 - The Box in the Forgotten Forest

People used to talk about that forest a long time ago, they said it once had clear paths and visitors and even small stories attached to it, but over the years it became quiet and distant as if the world had slowly decided to forget it. The trees there grew too tall and too close to each other and their branches covered the sky so much that sunlight could barely reach the ground. The air always felt colder inside and there was a strange silence that made everything feel unnatural.

That was where five scientists stood that day, far away from the city and far away from anything normal. They were not lost, they had followed something, an unusual energy signal strong enough to bring them into a place no one willingly entered. Dr. Adrian Voss moved forward carefully and looked around like he was expecting the forest to react, behind him Dr. Mira Kline checked her device again and quietly said that the signal was strongest right here. The others looked at each other but no one said what they were thinking, something about this place felt wrong.

Rayan Holt gave a small smile and said maybe it was just a mistake or some natural reading error, but Selene Ward slowly shook her head and replied that energy like this does not appear for no reason. Leo Grant who was the youngest suddenly stopped walking and looked around, he whispered that something felt strange. The group went silent.

There was no wind. There were no birds. It felt like the forest had stopped breathing. And then they saw it. A black box half buried in the ground a few steps ahead of them, it looked old older than anything they had ever seen. Its surface was covered with strange carvings that gave off a faint glow, not bright enough to light the area but enough to make it impossible to ignore. Mira took a slow breath and said this had to be the source. Adrian moved closer and knelt beside it, he studied it carefully instead of touching it right away. Leo hesitated and asked if they should really open it, Selene calmly answered that they did not come all this way to turn back now.

After a moment Adrian placed his hand on the box. For a second nothing happened.

Then suddenly the ground shook and a wave of energy spread out from the box. It was not loud but it was powerful enough to make all of them step back. The carvings on the surface began to glow brighter and the box slowly started to open on its own like it had been waiting for this moment. No one spoke. They could not.

Inside the box there were seven rings. Each one glowing with a different color, red blue green purple gold silver and black. They were not lying still, they floated slightly above the surface and moved slowly like they were alive, like they were watching. Leo whispered that they looked beautiful but Rayan quickly said that something about them felt dangerous. Adrian slowly reached his hand toward one of the rings but before he could touch it all seven rings suddenly started moving at the same time. Their glow became stronger and they began spinning faster until they turned into streaks of light.

And in the next moment they shot up into the sky and disappeared. Just like that. Gone. The forest returned to silence as if nothing had happened. The wind came back slowly and the trees stood still like they always had. The box now empty looked like nothing more than an old forgotten object. For a long moment no one said anything. Then Selene looked up at the sky and quietly said they were never meant for us.

Adrian frowned and asked what she meant. She replied in a calm voice that felt heavier than before, they chose their owners. And somewhere far away seven different lives were about to change forever.
