Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The First Choice

The village felt smaller when we returned.

Not because it had changed… but because I had.

People still rushed around, merchants still shouted, children still played—but now I noticed more. The way some villagers looked nervous. The way guards stood a little tighter near the entrances. The way conversations lowered when someone mentioned the forest.

Something bigger was going on.

Pip floated beside me, unusually quiet for once.

"You feel it too, don't you?" I asked.

He nodded. "Yeah. That quest wasn't just a tutorial. It's a hint."

"A hint of what?"

"Trouble," he said simply.

We stepped into the elder's house again.

The old man was exactly where we left him, as if he hadn't moved at all. His eyes opened slowly, and for a moment, it felt like he could see right through me.

"You have returned," he said.

"And I completed the task," I replied.

He nodded. "I can tell."

The air shifted slightly, and the familiar menu appeared:

Quest Completed: Defeat 3 Forest Creatures

Rewards Received:

Basic Skill Unlock ✔

Experience ✔

Village Reputation +1

I blinked. "Village reputation?"

Pip grinned. "That's important. People trust you more. Better quests, better rewards."

"Good," I said. "Because I feel like I'll need that."

The elder leaned forward slightly. "You handled yourself well for a beginner."

"Thanks… I think," I said.

"But this is only the beginning," he continued. "What you faced were merely strays. Something is driving them from deeper within the forest."

I crossed my arms. "You said that before. What exactly are we dealing with?"

The elder paused.

"That," he said slowly, "is what I would like you to discover."

Of course.

Another quest.

The menu appeared again, brighter this time.

New Quest Available:

Investigate the Forest Disturbance

Travel deeper into the forest

Locate the source of monster aggression

Return with information

Reward:

Advanced Skill Unlock

Equipment Item

Experience

I stared at it.

"This doesn't sound like a beginner quest."

"It's not," Pip said quietly.

I looked at him. "Then why am I getting it?"

He shrugged. "Because you leveled up fast. And…"

"And what?"

He hesitated. "Because you're not normal."

I didn't like how that sounded.

The elder spoke again. "You have a choice."

"A choice?" I repeated.

"Yes," he said. "You may take this quest… or you may refuse."

That surprised me.

"You can refuse quests?" I asked Pip.

"Yeah," he said. "But… there's always a cost."

"Of course there is," I muttered.

The elder continued, "If you refuse, you may continue taking smaller tasks around the village. You will grow slowly… but safely."

"And if I accept?"

"You will face danger far beyond what you have seen."

Silence filled the room.

For the first time since I arrived in this world, I hesitated.

Before, everything had been simple. Fight weak enemies. Level up. Get stronger.

But this…

This felt real.

"What do you think?" I asked Pip.

He crossed his tiny arms and floated in front of me. "Honestly?"

"Yeah."

"I think you can do it," he said. "But that doesn't mean it'll be easy."

"Helpful," I said dryly.

He smirked. "Look, you adapted fast. Faster than anyone I've seen. And now you have a real skill."

I clenched my fist slightly. A faint glow appeared around it.

Energy Strike.

It felt… natural now.

"But," Pip continued, "if something stronger is out there, you could get hurt. Badly."

I looked back at the quest menu.

Better rewards.

Faster growth.

More danger.

Or…

Stay safe.

Grow slowly.

Take small jobs.

It should have been an easy choice.

But it wasn't.

"Why me?" I asked the elder suddenly.

He didn't answer right away.

Instead, he studied me again.

"Because you are willing to ask that question," he said.

That… didn't help.

Pip chuckled. "Old man logic."

I exhaled slowly.

Back in my old life, I never got chances like this.

Everything was predictable.

Boring.

Safe.

And now?

Now I was standing in another world, being offered real adventure.

Real danger.

Real growth.

I looked at my hands.

They were stronger now.

Not just physically.

I felt sharper. Faster. More aware.

Like I was becoming something new.

I looked up.

"I'll take it," I said.

The menu flashed brightly.

Quest Accepted:

Investigate the Forest Disturbance

Pip grinned wide. "There it is!"

The elder nodded slowly. "Then prepare yourself."

"For what?" I asked.

"For the truth," he said.

I frowned. "That sounds worse than monsters."

"Sometimes," the elder replied, "it is."

He reached under the table and pulled out something wrapped in cloth.

"Take this," he said.

I stepped forward and unwrapped it carefully.

Inside was a small blade.

Simple.

Not flashy.

But sharp.

Very sharp.

Item Received:

Iron Dagger

Basic weapon

Slight bonus to attack

I held it in my hand.

It felt… right.

"Better than your fists," Pip said.

"Yeah," I agreed.

The elder leaned back. "You will need it."

I nodded. "I'll head out now."

"Wait," Pip said suddenly.

"What?"

He turned to the elder. "Any advice?"

The old man smiled faintly.

"Yes," he said. "Do not trust the silence."

I blinked. "That's… not comforting."

"It is not meant to be," he replied.

Great.

We stepped outside again.

The sun was starting to lower, casting long shadows across the village.

"Are we really doing this now?" I asked.

Pip shrugged. "Best time. Monsters get active near evening."

"Even better," I said sarcastically.

We walked toward the forest again.

But this time… it felt different.

Heavier.

The sounds were quieter.

The wind felt colder.

I gripped the dagger tighter.

"You nervous?" Pip asked.

"A little," I admitted.

"Good," he said.

"Good?"

"Means you're paying attention."

We stepped past the edge of the forest.

And this time… I didn't stop.

I kept walking.

Deeper.

Further than before.

The trees grew thicker.

The light faded faster.

Every step felt like entering another layer of the unknown.

Then—

Silence.

Complete silence.

No birds.

No wind.

Nothing.

I froze.

"What did the elder say?" Pip whispered.

"Don't trust the silence," I replied.

"Exactly."

A low sound echoed through the trees.

Not a growl.

Not quite.

Something… heavier.

My grip tightened on the dagger.

"That's not a Forest Fang," Pip said quietly.

"I figured."

The bushes ahead trembled.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Whatever was coming…

It wasn't weak.

I took a step back.

Then stopped.

"No," I muttered.

"What?" Pip asked.

"I'm not running."

The bushes parted.

And something stepped out.

Taller.

Darker.

Stronger.

Its eyes glowed brighter than anything I had seen before.

Pip's voice dropped.

"Level… 5."

I swallowed.

"That's… bad, right?"

"Very bad."

The creature took a step forward.

The ground felt like it shook slightly.

My heart pounded.

But this time…

I didn't freeze.

I raised the dagger.

Energy gathered in my hand.

Stronger than before.

Controlled.

Focused.

"Energy Strike," I whispered.

The creature lunged.

And I moved to meet it.

The real fight had begun.
