Chapter 3 - chapter 4 - Pain as a System

Pain didn't disappear after the fight.

It remained.

Not sharp.

Not immediate.

But constant.

Ren lay still for a long time.

He wasn't sure how long.

Time in the Abyss didn't pass the way it should.

There was no sun. No shadow. No reference.

Only change—and the absence of it.

His body felt heavy.

Not because it lacked strength—

But because it remembered.

Every movement from the fight replayed itself through his muscles.

The impact on his ribs.

The tearing of his shoulder.

The moment his breathing collapsed.

Pain wasn't just sensation.

It was information.

Ren slowly raised his arm.

The one that had struck the creature.

It trembled.

Not uncontrollably—

But enough to remind him:

You are not stable yet.

His eyes shifted to the faint red mark on his forearm.

It hadn't been there before.

Now it existed.

Sharp lines.

Geometric.

Unfamiliar.

Not glowing.

Not active.

But present.

Ren studied it in silence.

It appeared after the kill.

Not during.

Not before.

After.

Which meant—

It wasn't power.

It was… a record.

Ren exhaled slowly.

"Then this place doesn't give strength."

His voice sounded steadier now.

More grounded.

"It measures it."

The conclusion settled naturally.

The Abyss wasn't chaotic.

It wasn't random.

It was consistent.

Brutal.

But consistent.

Ren pushed himself up.

His ribs protested immediately.

A sharp pulse of pain spread through his chest.

His body tried to stop him.

He ignored it.

Not recklessly.

Not blindly.

He adjusted.

Shifted his weight.

Reduced pressure.

Controlled movement.

The pain didn't vanish.

But it became manageable.

Adaptation.

Ren stood fully now.

Unsteady.

But upright.

He looked around.

The space hadn't changed.

Still dark.

Still silent.

But no longer meaningless.

Now—

It was data.

The distortion from earlier still floated nearby.

Calm.

Steady.

Different from the creature.

Reliable.

Ren stepped toward it.

Slowly.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was thinking.

Last time, I reacted.

This time… I control the process.

He stopped just before reaching it.

Watched.

The pulse remained consistent.

His breathing adjusted automatically.

Matching it.

Inhale.

Pause.

Exhale.

Again.

Then—

He extended his hand.

Carefully.

Not rushing.

Not hesitating.

And touched it.

Pain returned instantly.

But this time—

It was different.

Not weaker.

Clearer.

Ren's body tensed.

But his mind—

Stayed focused.

He didn't pull back.

He observed.

Entry point: palm

Spread: forearm

Intensity: increasing…

His breathing stabilized.

The pain plateaued.

Not gone.

But controlled.

The distortion reacted.

A faint ripple expanded outward.

Red.

Subtle.

But responding.

Ren narrowed his eyes.

It's not rejecting me…

It's testing consistency.

His posture adjusted slightly.

A small correction in his shoulder.

A shift in balance.

The ripple grew more stable.

Then—

His focus broke.

For just a moment.

And the pain surged violently.

His hand was thrown back.

His body staggered.

He dropped to one knee.

Breathing disrupted.

Heart racing.

"…So that's the condition."

Ren exhaled slowly.

Control is required at all times.

Not just at the start.

Not just at the end.

Every moment.

Continuous.

Unforgiving.

Ren looked at the distortion again.

It hadn't changed.

Didn't react to his failure.

Didn't punish him further.

It simply… remained.

Neutral system.

No encouragement.

No correction.

Only response.

Ren stood again.

Slower this time.

More deliberate.

His body resisted.

Fatigue had begun to settle in.

Not sudden.

Accumulated.

Every movement cost something now.

But stopping—

Was not an option.

If I stop, I stagnate.

If I stagnate… I die.

Simple.

Ren stepped forward again.

This time—

He didn't aim to endure.

He aimed to understand.

He touched the distortion again.

Pain surged.

But he tracked it.

Timing…

Breathing…

Posture…

He adjusted mid-contact.

The pain shifted.

Not reduced.

But redistributed.

His arm stabilized slightly.

The red ripple appeared again.

More defined this time.

Ren held it longer.

Seconds passed.

Then—

A thin line of red energy formed.

Not flickering as much.

Not collapsing instantly.

Ren moved his hand slowly.

The line followed.

Controlled.

Weak.

But consistent.

"…Good."

A quiet acknowledgment.

Then—

His focus slipped again.

The line shattered.

Pain spiked.

He pulled back.

Fell to the ground.

Breathing hard now.

Exhaustion had caught up.

Ren lay there, staring into nothing.

His chest rose and fell unevenly.

Sweat formed along his forehead.

His body screamed for rest.

But his mind—

Was active.

This isn't training…

It's iteration.

Failure.

Adjustment.

Retry.

Over and over.

No shortcuts.

No system assistance.

Just—

Reality.

Ren slowly turned his head.

The red mark on his arm flickered faintly.

Not visibly.

But… differently.

It changed.

Slightly.

The lines were sharper now.

More defined.

It evolves.

Not automatically.

Based on performance.

Ren closed his eyes.

Not to rest.

To process.

Everything connected.

The creature.

The distortion.

The pain.

The mark.

All part of the same structure.

A system—

Without being called one.

Ren opened his eyes again.

Clear.

Focused.

"…Then I'll build my own."

Not rely.

Not follow.

Build.

From scratch.

He pushed himself up again.

Slower.

But steadier.

The pain was still there.

But it no longer controlled him.

It guided him.

Ren stepped forward.

Back toward the distortion.

Not as a victim.

Not as prey.

But as something else.

Something adapting.

Something learning.

Something changing.

He raised his hand again.

This time—

Without hesitation.
