Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Mist

The climb up the Whispering Mountains started gently enough, but within hours the path narrowed to a ledge barely wide enough for one person at a time. The air grew thin and cold, and the mist that gave the mountains their name curled around them like fingers, carrying sounds that weren't quite words.

"Can you hear that?" Hana asked, pulling her new cloak tighter. "It sounds like… people talking. But I can't make out what they're saying."

Ren paused, holding up his staff, the crystal at its top began to glow softly, cutting through the mist. "I hear it too. It's like the mountain itself is trying to speak to us."

As they climbed higher, the whispers grew louder, weaving into their thoughts. Hana felt a sudden pull to turn back, to run to Silverleaf and hide, It's too dangerous, the whispers seemed to say. You're not strong enough.

She shook her head, pressing her hand to the focus crystal at her neck. Instantly, the warm pulse from the stone grounded her, chasing away the fog in her mind. "The crystal works," she said, relief in her voice. "It's keeping the whispers from messing with my head."

Ren nodded, using his staff to test the ground ahead. "The staff is helping too, it's showing me solid footing even where the mist hides the path."

Just as he spoke, a low growl echoed through the rocks above. A massive creature leaped down onto the ledge before them, once a mountain cat, now twisted with gray stone scales and eyes that burned like embers. Its claws scraped against the rock, sending pebbles tumbling into the valley below.

The star crystals at their waists blazed bright blue.

"Stay behind me," Ren said, planting his staff firmly on the ground. Hana stepped close, her hands beginning to glow with golden light as she focused through the crystal around her neck.

The cat lunged, but Ren swung his staff, channeling Hana's power into a burst of light that struck the creature's shoulder. The corruption cracked, but the beast only snarled and circled them, using the mist to hide its movements.

"The whispers are helping it stay hidden!" Hana called out, closing her eyes to focus harder. She let the warmth of the focus crystal flow through her, and suddenly she could feel the creature's presence, like a cold spot in the air.

"To your left!" she shouted.

Ren spun, driving his staff into the ground. Golden light exploded outward in a circle, illuminating the cat even through the mist. Hana stepped forward, her hands outstretched, and sent a steady stream of light directly at the creature's chest.

The corruption crumbled away in flakes of black stone, revealing a sleek gray cat beneath. It stared at them for a moment, then let out a soft meow before bounding up the rocks and disappearing into the mist.

"That was close," Ren said, leaning on his staff to catch his breath. "We wouldn't have found it without your focus crystal."

Hana smiled, though she was still panting. "And we wouldn't have hit it without you guiding my power. We make a good team."

As they continued up, the mist began to clear, revealing a small stone shelter tucked into a cliff face. Inside, carved into the walls, were symbols that matched the ones on the temple altar, and a single line of writing: "Power without purpose is just light in the dark. Find the balance, and you will find the way."

"Someone was here before us," Ren said, tracing the words with his finger. "Another bearer of the Ancient God Body?"

"Maybe," Hana replied, looking at the symbols thoughtfully. "Or someone who understood what it means to carry this power."

They rested in the shelter for a while, eating dried bread and drinking water. Through the opening, they could see the mountain pass just ahead, clear of mist, with the vast expanse of the Crystal Marshes stretching beyond.

"Ready to face the marshes?" Ren asked, offering her his hand.

Hana took it, her eyes set on the path forward. "With you by my side? Always."
