Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — Phase 2 Begins

The countdown hit zero.

For a split second—

Nothing happened.

No explosion.

No sudden attack.

Just silence.

Then—

[PHASE 2 INITIATED]

The world shook.

It wasn't like an earthquake. It felt deeper—like something beneath reality itself had shifted.

Adrian Vance slowly lifted his head.

The gates in the sky… changed.

They didn't just open anymore.

They expanded.

Dark energy bled out from their edges, spreading like ink across water. The air grew heavier, harder to breathe. Even the light around them dimmed slightly, as if the sun itself had taken a step back.

"…So this is the next level," Adrian muttered.

Around him, people panicked again.

"What's happening now?!"

"Why are they getting bigger?!"

"We need to hide!"

But Adrian didn't move.

His eyes were locked on the nearest gate.

Waiting.

Watching.

Something dropped.

BOOM.

It landed hard enough to crack the pavement.

Adrian's grip tightened around his dagger.

This one—

Was different.

Taller than the Ravagers from before. Its body was bulkier, covered in dark, hardened flesh that looked closer to armor than skin. Its limbs were thicker, more defined, and its claws longer—curved like blades.

Its head tilted slowly.

Then its glowing red eyes locked onto him.

[MONSTER DETECTED: ARMORED RAVAGER]

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"…Of course."

The creature didn't hesitate.

It charged.

Fast.

Too fast.

Adrian moved instinctively, stepping to the side as the monster's claw tore through the air where his head had been a split second earlier.

SWOOSH.

The force of it alone made his hair shift.

"…That's not something I can tank."

He jumped back, creating distance.

The Armored Ravager didn't give him time to think. It turned immediately, launching another attack—this time a wide horizontal swing aimed at his torso.

Adrian raised his dagger—

CLANG!

The impact sent a shock through his arm.

He was pushed back several steps, boots scraping against the pavement.

"…Yeah," he muttered, shaking his hand slightly. "Definitely stronger."

This wasn't like before.

Against the normal Ravagers, he could overpower them with speed and repeated strikes.

But this—

This one demanded something else.

Control.

The Armored Ravager growled, lowering its stance again.

Adrian didn't rush.

Didn't panic.

Instead—

He watched.

Every movement.

Every shift of its weight.

Every twitch of its muscles.

"…You're not just stronger," he whispered. "You're slower on recovery."

The monster lunged again.

Adrian sidestepped—but this time, he didn't retreat.

He stayed close.

"Let's test that."

The Ravager swung downward.

Adrian dodged at the last possible second—

The claw slammed into the ground—

And for a brief moment—

It paused.

There.

Adrian's eyes sharpened.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: WEAPON MASTERY (BASIC)]

His body moved naturally.

Smooth.

Efficient.

Like it had done this a thousand times before.

He stepped in—

Twisting his body—

And drove the dagger forward.

SHK!

The blade struck the creature's neck—

But—

It didn't go all the way through.

Adrian's eyes widened slightly.

"…Tough."

The Ravager roared, swinging wildly.

Adrian jumped back just in time, barely avoiding the counterattack.

He landed, sliding a short distance.

"…So brute force won't work either."

He adjusted his grip on the dagger.

His breathing slowed.

His thoughts sharpened.

"Then I just need to be better."

The Ravager charged again.

This time—

Adrian didn't dodge immediately.

He waited.

Closer.

Closer.

Closer—

"Now."

He moved.

Not away—

But inside the attack.

The claw missed him by inches.

Adrian stepped into the monster's blind spot—

Lower.

Closer.

Then—

SLASH.

A clean, precise cut across the same spot.

The neck.

The monster staggered.

But Adrian didn't stop.

"Again."

SLASH.

Same place.

Same angle.

Same precision.

Cracks began to form in its armored skin.

[WEAK POINT IDENTIFIED]

"There it is."

The Ravager roared again, more violently this time.

It swung wildly—

Desperately.

Adrian ducked under one attack, spun past another—

Every movement sharper than before.

Faster.

Cleaner.

Then—

He saw his moment.

The monster raised both arms—

Preparing a heavy strike.

Adrian stepped in.

Everything slowed.

His heartbeat echoed in his ears.

Thump.

Grip tightened.

Thump.

Eyes locked on the cracked point.

Thump.

Then—

"End."

SHK!

The dagger pierced deep into the weakened spot.

This time—

It went through.

The Ravager froze.

Its body trembled—

Then collapsed.

[ENEMY DEFEATED]

The massive body dissolved into black fragments, scattering into the air before disappearing completely.

Silence followed.

Adrian stood still.

Breathing.

Thinking.

Processing.

"…So that's the difference."

He looked down at his dagger.

Then at where the monster had fallen.

"It's not about hitting harder…"

He exhaled slowly.

"It's about hitting right."

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL: 2 → 3]

A stronger surge of energy flowed through his body.

His fatigue vanished.

His senses sharpened again.

He could feel it clearly now—

He was evolving.

Not just physically.

But mentally.

From the distance—

More crashes echoed.

More monsters.

More fights.

More deaths.

Adrian looked up at the sky.

The gates were still opening.

Still pouring out enemies.

"…This isn't stopping anytime soon."

He tightened his grip on the dagger.

"Good."

A faint smirk formed on his face.

Because now—

He understood something important.

Fear didn't disappear.

You just learned how to move through it.

Adrian stepped forward.

Toward the next fight.

Behind him—

A pair of survivors watched in silence.

"…Did you see that?"

"…He fought it alone…"

"…Who is that guy?"

But Adrian didn't hear them.

Didn't care.

Because right now—

There was only one thing on his mind.

Getting stronger.

Faster.

Better.

Above the broken sky—

Something shifted.

Watching him.

[NOTICE]

[ADRIAN VANCE HAS EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS]

[EVALUATION STATUS: ELEVATED]

The system wasn't just observing anymore.

It was paying attention.

And that—

Was far more dangerous.
