Chapter 51 - Episode 51 : Whitefang Forest

Into the Whitefang Forest

Morning fog drifted across the restored Bridge of Ardent Passage as the expedition resumed its journey.

The repaired construction automatons stood silently at the western gate.

Builder Unit B-12 and the two remaining automatons raised their massive bronze arms in farewell.

Their assignment was not to travel.

Their duty was to remain.

To continue rebuilding the bridge until every stone rested where it belonged.

Dorion saluted them.

"Thank you."

The lead automaton answered with a simple nod.

"Safe travels... Founder's Road Expedition."

The expedition crossed the bridge one final time.

Ahead...

the world changed.

Towering pines stretched hundreds of feet into the sky.

Their silver bark shimmered beneath the morning sun.

Ancient roots coiled across the Founder's Road like sleeping serpents.

The air grew colder.

Every sound became softer.

Even Bardin lowered his music.

No one needed to say it.

They had entered Whitefang Forest.

The Silent Canopy

The forest was unlike anything the younger members of the expedition had ever seen.

Massive trees blocked most of the sunlight.

Soft beams of gold slipped through the branches like pillars supporting the heavens.

Bright blue moss covered fallen logs.

Tiny crystal flowers bloomed beside forgotten milestones.

Ancient relay towers leaned quietly among the trees, almost completely swallowed by nature.

Birdsong echoed above.

Some birds possessed feathers that shimmered like polished bronze.

Others left trails of glowing pollen as they flew.

Lirion quietly recorded everything inside his journal.

"These species don't exist in Aurion."

One of the Nordfrost hunters smiled.

"They never left."

"We simply stopped visiting."

Lessons of the Forest

Travel through Whitefang was slow.

The Founder's Road disappeared beneath centuries of roots and undergrowth.

The expedition naturally divided into small working groups.

Ironhide Clan craftsmen carefully removed fallen trees blocking the road without damaging the living forest.

Veilkeeper scouts silently marked hidden ravines using woven grass markers that blended into nature.

Hunters of the Serpent Wastes identified edible plants, poisonous mushrooms, and safe water sources.

The Nordfrost tribesmen studied the changing wind.

"Storm tonight."

One young engineer looked upward.

"The sky is clear."

The old hunter smiled.

"The trees are already listening."

The Crystal Elk

Near midday...

the lead scouts suddenly raised their hands.

The expedition halted.

Ahead...

a magnificent herd of Crystal Elk stood upon the Founder's Road.

Their antlers resembled translucent ice.

Sunlight refracted through them, scattering rainbows across the forest floor.

At the center of the herd lay several newborn calves.

The trail ahead belonged to them now.

One impatient volunteer reached for his rifle.

"We can scare them away."

Dorion gently lowered the weapon.

"No."

"They were here first."

The hunters nodded in agreement.

Sorion slowly stepped forward.

The bronze compass gave a faint pulse.

A Memory Echo stirred.

For a brief moment...

the forest transformed.

Travelers from ancient Orinthal walked beside these same elk.

Children laughed while feeding them fruit.

Construction workers patiently waited for the herd to cross before continuing their journey.

The elk had never been obstacles.

They had always been companions of the Founder's Road.

The vision faded.

Sorion smiled.

"We'll go around."

It took the expedition nearly three extra hours to carve a gentle detour through the woods.

No one complained.

As the last wagon passed, the oldest elk bowed its head toward the travelers.

Then quietly led its family deeper into the forest.

The Forgotten Weather Station

By afternoon, the expedition discovered another relic of the old civilization.

A bronze tower rose above the trees.

Its upper half had collapsed.

Massive crystal vanes hung motionless.

Lirion immediately recognized its purpose.

"A Weather Observation Station."

Inside, ancient gears remained intact beneath layers of dust.

Rotating pressure gauges.

Wind direction arrays.

Storm prediction crystals.

Most had simply seized from age.

Not broken.

Only asleep.

Working beside several Iron Legion engineers, Lirion carefully dismantled the damaged mechanisms.

Parts beyond repair were respectfully salvaged.

Others were cleaned, polished, and restored.

As the final relay crystal clicked into place...

the great vanes slowly began turning once more.

A soft blue light spread across the tower.

Ancient instruments awakened.

The tower projected a map of the surrounding mountains into the air.

Colored currents marked incoming weather systems.

One apprentice gasped.

"It can predict storms."

Lirion smiled.

"It always could."

The Forest Answers

Almost immediately...

the wind changed.

Leaves rustled across the canopy.

Birds adjusted their flight.

Animals quietly altered their paths.

The restored weather station was not commanding nature.

It was speaking with it.

The forest responded as though greeting an old friend.

Even the Nordfrost hunters looked impressed.

"Your ancestors understood the wind."

Lirion shook his head.

"They listened to it."

Nightfall

The expedition camped beside a clear mountain stream.

Cooking fires remained small.

No trees were cut unnecessarily.

Dead branches gathered naturally from the forest floor provided enough fuel.

As twilight settled, Bardin performed another melody.

This one was softer than before.

Gentle violin notes blended with quiet percussion until they became almost indistinguishable from the sounds of the forest itself.

No applause followed.

The forest seemed to sing with him.

Even the stream flowed in rhythm.

Eyes in the Darkness

Later that night...

Veilkeeper scouts rotated through their watches.

One quietly signaled another.

Movement.

Between the trees.

Several pairs of glowing blue eyes watched the camp.

No growls.

No aggression.

Only observation.

The scouts remained calm.

Slowly...

the creatures stepped into the moonlight.

White Wolves.

Larger than ordinary wolves.

Their silver-white fur shimmered beneath the stars.

Crystal markings traced gentle patterns across their shoulders.

At their center stood an enormous elder wolf whose eyes reflected the same ancient blue light Sorion had seen within restored Orinthal machines.

The elder wolf looked toward the expedition.

Then toward the repaired weather station in the distance.

Finally...

it lifted its head.

A single long howl echoed through Whitefang Forest.

From every direction...

other howls answered.

The sound rolled across mountains, valleys, and forgotten roads.

Not as a warning.

As a message.

Far beyond the forest...

another ancient relay quietly awakened beneath the earth.

Its crystal pulsed once.

Then again.

The road ahead had heard the call.

Something deeper within the northern frontier now knew that travelers once more walked the Founder's Road.

The Whitefang Forest had accepted them.

But beyond the trees...

greater mysteries were beginning to awaken.
