The first crack appeared at dinner.
Not in us.
In the silence.
I noticed it because Kairo went still.
Not visibly—no one else at the long table would have caught it—but I had learned his quiet had different meanings.
This one was dangerous.
"What?" I asked through the bond before I could stop myself.
His eyes flicked toward me.
Nothing.
But the thought I wasn't supposed to hear brushed mine anyway.
He's here.
Cold slid through me.
Before I could ask who—
The doors opened.
And the room changed.
A scent hit first.
Sweet.
Sharp.
Omega.
Not mine.
Every servant lowered their head.
Every alpha at the table stiffened.
And then he walked in.
Beautiful.
Almost painfully so.
Silver hair falling over pale eyes. Elegant like a blade.
Like someone sculpted to be adored.
And when he smiled at Kairo—
My stomach dropped.
Because I knew.
I knew before anyone said it.
The real lover.
The one I was supposed to be replacing.
The omega this marriage was built around.
He had returned.
"Kairo," he said softly.
The room went silent enough to hear breathing.
Kairo stood.
And for one awful second—
I forgot how.
The omega's eyes shifted.
To me.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he was studying a stain on silk.
Then he smiled.
"Oh," he murmured. "So this is the substitute."
Substitute.
The word landed like a slap.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
I should have said something.
Should have laughed.
Should have played indifferent.
But my mind betrayed me.
So this is the one I was supposed to lose to?
And before I could stop it—
Kairo heard.
His gaze snapped to me.
Sharp.
Too sharp.
The omega noticed.
Interesting.
He stepped closer to Kairo.
Close enough I hated it instantly.
"I came back," he said.
Like it was a promise.
Like it was a claim.
And Kairo—
Said nothing.
That hurt more.
I pushed back my chair.
Too fast.
The sound cut through the room.
"I'm done eating."
I walked out before anyone stopped me.
Before anyone saw humiliation burning under my skin.
Before Kairo could hear every jealous thought exploding in my head.
I made it to my room.
Then paced.
Once.
Twice.
Ten times.
Of course the real lover is devastatingly gorgeous.
Of course.
Because apparently this world hates me.
I laughed bitterly.
Take his money and run, right?
That had been the plan.
So why did my chest feel split open?
Why did "substitute" hurt?
Why did seeing Kairo stand for him feel like betrayal?
The bond pulsed.
Warm.
Insistent.
I shut it out.
No.
I was angry.
I deserved that.
A knock.
Then the door opened anyway.
Kairo.
"You left."
Brilliant observation.
"I noticed," I said.
He shut the door behind him.
The room felt smaller instantly.
"You're angry."
"No."
Lie.
"You're lying."
"No, I'm being dramatic. Different thing."
His mouth almost twitched.
I hated that.
Don't smile when I'm falling apart.
"You heard my thoughts," I accused.
"Yes."
"Great. Then you know I'm jealous and irrational and apparently losing my mind."
"You are jealous."
I stared.
"You said that way too calmly."
"Because it's true."
I crossed my arms.
"You could deny it to be polite."
"I prefer honesty."
I laughed once.
Sharp.
"Honesty? Fine. Is he why you married me?"
Silence.
The kind that cuts.
Then—
"No."
But too slow.
Too careful.
And I hated that more.
"He came back," I whispered. "What happens to the stand-in omega now?"
Kairo moved closer.
I stepped back.
He stopped.
"You think I would discard you."
"Wasn't that the arrangement?"
"No."
"That was literally the arrangement."
"It changed."
"When?"
He looked at me.
Too intensely.
"When you stayed."
The bond pulsed.
Warm enough to ache.
I looked away.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Say things that make it hard to be angry."
Silence.
Then—
"You were jealous."
I covered my face.
"Can we not revisit that?"
"You thought he was beautiful."
"You heard that too?"
"Yes."
Kill me.
"And?"
"And you hated it."
I peeked at him.
"You enjoying this?"
"No."
Liar.
Then his expression shifted.
Serious.
Dangerously soft.
"You thought I'd choose him."
I swallowed.
Didn't answer.
Because yes.
Obviously yes.
The real omega returned.
What was I supposed to think?
Kairo stepped closer.
This time I didn't move.
His voice dropped.
"I was listening to your thoughts before dinner."
"…That sounds invasive."
"You were thinking about staying."
My pulse stuttered.
"I think that ship sailed chapters ago."
He ignored that.
"You were thinking this feels like home."
My throat tightened.
Why did he remember every thought I tried to hide?
"Kairo—"
"You asked what happens to the stand-in omega."
I forced myself to meet his eyes.
"Yes."
His hand lifted.
Paused near my face.
Not touching.
Almost worse.
"You stopped being a stand-in a long time ago."
Everything in me went still.
That shouldn't have hit so hard.
It did.
Then—
Another knock.
The door opened before permission.
Silver-haired omega.
Of course.
He leaned against the frame, smiling.
"I wondered where you ran off to."
I froze.
Kairo's expression turned cold enough to freeze blood.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
The omega's eyes slid between us.
Then landed on me.
"You're cuter jealous."
I nearly choked.
Excuse me?
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
Then looked at Kairo.
"You didn't tell him?"
"Leave."
"No."
Tension sharpened instantly.
I looked between them.
Confused.
Annoyed.
Suspicious.
Tell me what?
The omega smiled.
Cruel.
Playful.
Both.
Then said—
"Maybe your husband should explain why I'm not the threat you think I am."
And left.
Just like that.
The door shut.
Silence.
Heavy.
Explosive.
I turned slowly.
"Kairo."
He said nothing.
"Kairo…"
Still nothing.
My eyes narrowed.
"What exactly am I missing?"
He looked almost—
Cornered.
For the first time.
And suddenly—
I understood.
There was more.
A lot more.
And whatever truth stood behind that door—
Was about to break everything open.
