Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Knight Who Knocks

The path to the Temple of Fiends was marked by the ruins of a once-great civilization. Moss-covered pillars jutted from the damp earth like broken teeth, and the air grew thick and cold, a stark contrast to the warmth of Cornelia.

The grind over the last few days had paid off, though. We had faces like stone and muscles that moved with practiced ease. Sarah had learned to channel her magic into powerful healing waves, Maya was a whirlwind of devastating punches, and Elena's spells were becoming a destructive force of nature. I had even mastered a couple of flashy sword techniques. We felt ready.

But standing before the looming temple, its massive doors flanked by statues of ancient monsters, my stomach twisted into a knot of apprehension. This was it—our first real test, our first step on the road to getting home.

The interior was vast and dimly lit, illuminated only by a few sputtering torches.

The silence was oppressive, broken only by the echo of our footsteps on the cold stone floor. Garland was waiting for us in the central chamber, seated on a throne built from the bones of defeated foes. Beside him, huddled in a corner, was Princess Sarah, her eyes wide with fear.

Garland rose as we entered, his dark armor clanking ominous. A massive sword, jagged and black, rested on his shoulder. "So, the 'Warriors of Light' finally arrive," he said, his voice a rumbling growl that seemed to vibrate in my skull. "I've been looking forward to knocking you all down."

He didn't wait for a response. He lunged, his black sword a deadly blur. Instinct, honed by our days of grinding, took over. I raised my sword, meeting his blow with a sickening clang. The impact vibrated through my entire body, and I was thrown backward, skidding across the stone floor.

Sarah's white magic immediately enveloped me, knitting the torn muscles and dulling the pain. Maya moved with surprising speed, her fists raining a barrage of blows on Garland's armor, while Elena unleashed a powerful spell, a ball of intense fire that erupted against his shield.

Garland roared, a sound that was less human and more beast. He swung his massive sword again, a sweeping attack that sent Maya flying. But he wasn't invincible. The repeated attacks, the combination of magic and martial skill, were beginning to show. Small cracks appeared in his armor, and a dark substance, like ichor, seeped from the wounds.

"He's weakened!" Elena cried, her fingers sparking with energy. "We have to hit him with everything we've got!"

I nodded, gripping my sword tight. This was it. The moment we had been training for. The moment we would finally get one step closer to home. We surged forward, a united front, our determination matching the darkness that radiated from our foe.

With a final, desperate cry, I drove my sword into a gap in Garland's armor. The black knight roared one last time, his massive body crumpling to the floor. Silence descended on the chamber, heavy and profound. We had done it.
