Chapter 16 - Not Alone Anymore

The sun had begun to climb higher in the sky.

Stephanie and Maya were still sitting on the sidewalk where they had met earlier that morning.

Cars passed by. People walked quickly along the street, busy with their own lives.

But the two girls remained where they were, as if neither of them was quite sure what the next step should be.

Maya stretched her legs and sighed.

"So… where are you heading?" she asked.

Stephanie shook her head slowly.

"I don't know."

Maya raised an eyebrow.

"You ran away without a plan?"

Stephanie gave a small, embarrassed shrug.

"I just knew I couldn't stay there anymore."

Maya studied her face for a moment.

Then she nodded slowly.

"Yeah," she said quietly. "I understand that feeling."

Stephanie glanced at her.

"You said you lived with your aunt?"

Maya laughed bitterly.

"Yeah. Worst mistake of my life."

"What happened?" Stephanie asked softly.

Maya looked down at the ground.

"My parents died when I was ten," she said. "After that, my aunt took me in."

She paused before continuing.

"At first she acted nice… but that didn't last long."

Stephanie listened silently.

"She always made me feel like I was a burden," Maya said. "Like feeding me was some huge sacrifice."

Her voice hardened slightly.

"I cleaned her house, took care of her kids, did everything she asked."

"And it was still never enough."

Stephanie felt a familiar ache in her chest.

"So I left," Maya finished.

Stephanie nodded slowly.

"I left home too."

Maya tilted her head.

"What happened?"

Stephanie hesitated.

The memories felt too heavy to explain.

"My home just wasn't… safe," she said quietly.

Maya didn't ask more questions.

She simply nodded.

Sometimes pain didn't need too many explanations.

For a moment, the two girls sat in silence again.

Then Maya suddenly stood up.

"Well," she said, brushing dust from her jeans, "sitting here isn't going to help us survive."

Stephanie looked up at her.

"So what do we do?"

Maya shrugged.

"We find work."

Stephanie blinked.

"Work?"

"Yeah," Maya said simply. "Small jobs. Anything that pays."

She pointed toward the street ahead.

"Restaurants, shops, markets… somebody might need help."

Stephanie slowly stood up too.

The idea felt intimidating.

But it also felt like the first real step forward.

"You really think we can do it?" she asked.

Maya looked at her and smiled slightly.

"We kind of have to."

Stephanie let out a small breath.

Then, after a moment, she said something quietly.

"I don't think I can survive this alone."

Maya's expression softened.

"Good," she replied.

"Because I don't think I can either."

Stephanie felt something warm settle in her chest.

For the first time since leaving home…

she wasn't facing the world by herself.

Maya extended her hand.

"Partners?"

Stephanie looked at it.

Then she smiled faintly and shook it.

"Partners."
