Chapter 11 - CHAPTER 11: After the Vows

The ceremony ended, but the weight of it lingered.

Guests moved slowly through the grand hall, their voices low, their smiles polite but hollow. Laughter rose here and there, forced and brief, quickly swallowed by the heavy atmosphere that refused to lift.

Lilac stood where she had been left, her hands still faintly cold from the binding. The ribbon had been removed, but the feeling remained, as if something unseen still held her in place. She didn't move.

Around her, people passed, bowing slightly, offering quiet congratulations that felt more like formal obligations than genuine joy.

"Princess Lilac… congratulations."

"May your union bring peace."

She nodded when necessary, her lips barely parting in response. The words blurred together, meaningless.

Across the hall, Rael stood surrounded by a few northern nobles. He listened, but did not engage much, his expression unchanged, his presence alone enough to keep others measured in their approach.

For a brief moment, his gaze shifted.

It found her.

Lilac looked away first.

The crowd thinned gradually. The music faded. Silence returned in pieces.

"You should not stand alone."

Lilac stiffened slightly at the voice.

Rael.

She turned to face him, her expression composed, though her fingers tightened slightly against her dress. Up close, his presence felt heavier, more real than before.

"I'm not alone," she said quietly.

"You are," he replied without hesitation.

The bluntness caught her off guard. Lilac held his gaze for a moment, then looked away.

"Then I suppose that won't change."

Rael studied her, his golden eyes sharp, observant. "You'll get used to it."

"I don't want to get used to it," she said softly.

"That doesn't matter."

Silence fell between them. Not awkward, just empty.

Lilac let out a slow breath. "Is that how you see this? Something to endure until it feels normal?"

Rael tilted his head slightly. "It already is normal."

"For you, maybe."

"For both of us," he corrected calmly. "You just haven't accepted it yet."

Lilac's chest tightened, but she didn't respond.

Rael stepped back slightly, as if the conversation had reached its limit.

"Prepare yourself, We leave soon."

"So quickly?" she asked before she could stop herself.

"Yes."

That was all.

"Lilac."

She turned. Queen Morwenna approached, her presence commanding as ever, her expression composed and unreadable.

Lilac straightened instinctively. "Mother."

The queen's gaze lingered on her briefly, assessing. "The ceremony is complete.

You understand what that means."

Lilac nodded slowly. "Yes."

"You will leave with them," the queen continued. "There will be no delays."

Her tone left no room for argument.

Lilac swallowed. "I understand."

"Good." The queen paused, then added, "Do not forget who you are, even in a foreign land. You carry this kingdom with you now."

Lilac lowered her gaze. "I won't forget."

For a moment, something unreadable flickered in the queen's eyes but it vanished just as quickly.

"See that you don't."

Then she turned and walked away. Just like that.

From the far end of the hall, unseen by most, Riven stood in the shadows. His silver eyes were fixed on Lilac, sharp and burning with restrained emotion. His jaw was tight, his hands clenched at his sides. He had watched everything. The vows. The silence. The way she stood alone even among people. His chest tightened.

"This isn't over…" he murmured under his breath. Not yet.

The last of the guests began to leave. Servants moved quietly, clearing the remains of a celebration that had never truly existed.

Lilac stood still for a moment longer, then turned toward the exit. Each step felt heavier than the last. Behind her, Mooncrest Palace stood tall and familiar.

Ahead of her… was something unknown. And this time there would be no turning back.

Later, in Lilac's chambers:

The door closed softly behind her, shutting out the remnants of the ceremony. Lilac exhaled slowly, hoping for a moment of solitude, but a shadow moved across the room.

Rael.

Before she could react, he was close, close enough that the heat of his presence pressed against her. "Lilac," he said, his voice lower now, almost a whisper.

She could feel the deliberate intent in the tilt of his head, the way his golden eyes searched hers. Slowly, he leaned closer, as if to test the distance between them… to cross it.

Her breath hitched. Instinctively, her hands tightened against her dress, gripping the silk folds. The faint spark of warning flared inside her.

Rael paused, his eyes catching hers, reading the silent command she would not speak aloud. For a heartbeat, the world shrank to the space between them the pull, the tension, the almost-kiss suspended in the air.

He exhaled, just enough to break the spell, stepping back slightly, though his gaze never left hers. "I… didn't think you'd stop me," he admitted, his voice calm but edged with surprise.

"I won't make it easy," Lilac said softly, but firmly, regaining control of her pulse.

Rael studied her for another long moment, a flicker of respect perhaps amusement crossing his golden eyes.

Then, silently, he straightened, the moment passed, leaving only the weight of what had almost happened.

And Lilac knew: the game between them had only just begun.
