In the end, she still fell asleep.
She just had not slept quite enough. Her eyelids felt heavy, and her head was foggy and sluggish.
In her sleep, Chihaya Yui unconsciously wrapped her arms around Seiun Ryoka and nuzzled closer. It could not be helped. In this foreign land, the only source of warmth she could cling to was the familiar horse girl beside her.
She even wanted to act spoiled and beg Ryoka not to leave her.
In a hazy daze, Yui felt something long, yet somehow a little soft, force its way into her mouth. She licked at it without thinking, then even bit down lightly on it. It felt like one of Seiun Ryoka's fingers.
Then she heard Ryoka's voice.
"So Yui likes this kind of play? Got it. But Yui, now's not the time for that. What comes next might taste a little bitter, so hang in there."
What followed was a string of muttering.
"Wasn't sweating it out supposed to work? She sweated that much last night, so why isn't she better at all? Was that just a random failure, or is there actually no scientific basis for it in the first place?"
Based on that sneeze from yesterday, Ryoka had figured Yui might be coming down with something. So the moment they entered the room, she had turned up the heat, then thoroughly messed around with Yui in the bathroom, and after that had even held her while they slept together. Yet somehow, Yui had still caught it.
At that point, what else was there to do? It could only come down to medicine.
With the help of the Wild Rune, Ryoka could handcraft medicine on the spot. The problem was how to get Yui to swallow it. She pried open Yui's mouth, slipped her fingers inside, gave a brief explanation, and then poured the medicine in.
Ryoka had absolute confidence in this medicine, both in its efficacy and in its taste.
But for Yui, the experience was difficult to describe.
The stimulation was so intense it shot straight into her brain. She started coughing violently, feeling as though she might throw up everything she had eaten the day before.
And that left her with a profound question.
No, was this really something humans were supposed to drink? More to the point, this absolutely was not something that should be put in a mouth!
Tears sprang to Yui's eyes from the choking fit.
Anyone who saw the scene without context would probably think Seiun Ryoka was torturing Chihaya Yui for information.
Looking at the utter mess the bed had become, Ryoka sighed and tried to reason with her.
"Good medicine tastes bitter, Yui. You can't be so willful."
Yui wanted to explain herself, but she did not have the strength to speak. She could barely even open her eyes.
Under those circumstances, Ryoka came up with what she considered an excellent solution. Tilting back her head, she swallowed a mouthful of the medicine herself, then told Yui, "Guh-guh... just bear with it a little, Yui."
Yui suddenly felt a hot touch against her lips. Her already elevated body temperature climbed even higher, and she unconsciously rubbed her thighs together, her long fingers clutching tightly at the bedsheets.
Under Ryoka's guidance, she opened her mouth without thinking and tasted that unbearably bitter medicine. But this time, it was different. This mouthful carried a very strong trace of Seiun Ryoka herself, and somehow... it even seemed a little sweet?
Yui felt that had to be her imagination. The medicine was far too bitter. How could it possibly taste sweet? She had to be mistaken.
And yet she could clearly feel it. This time, she truly was willing to swallow it. Maybe it was because Ryoka had given her strength. Part of her even wanted Ryoka to praise her.
The only problem was that Ryoka was not in any position to speak right then. She was too busy feeding Yui the medicine.
It took quite a while to finish the whole process, though that was only because Yui clung to her so stubbornly. Otherwise, Ryoka could have been done in under a minute.
Looking down at the now deeply sleeping Yui, Ryoka sighed in mock exasperation.
"Honestly, who would've thought Yui was such a greedy child? Bad children get punished, you know~"
As she spoke, she slowly ran her tongue over the lingering medicine on her lips, looking almost dangerously alluring.
Then she stretched lazily, and an eerie green glow stirred in her eyes, sharp enough to call to mind the sound of a blade leaving its scabbard.
The next moment, black mist came billowing out from every corner of the room. It twisted like serpents, hissing as it coiled around her body and climbed higher. Within the mist, that same green light gathered into jagged, distorted runes, while a sinister crown slowly took shape above her head. Even the air seemed to thicken and freeze.
Ryoka glanced toward Yui, lying there peacefully on the bed, and murmured, "I'll be back before you know it."
Yui was asleep now. Her cold would definitely get better. In that case, Ryoka naturally had to seize the moment and get in another run inside the Cycle's End. The weather here looked a little suspicious, so she ought to simulate a race first.
After all, she had come here to compete, not to sightsee.
And so—
the heavens opened.
A transparent curtain of rain stretched between heaven and earth, so dense it looked ready to swallow Randwick Racecourse whole.
"So the weather in Australia really is a pain, huh."
Inside the gate, Ryoka wiped her face and flicked a hand through her nearly soaked hair. She could clearly feel the anxiety and unrest in the field around her, along with the unmistakable sense of hostility directed at her from every angle.
From the perspective of sprint and mile racing, Australia was relatively isolated. The horse girls here clearly possessed the strength to dominate races across multiple continents, yet most of them preferred to keep to themselves and compete on Australian turf.
Now that someone had barged in to challenge their ground, of course they would be displeased. If these were not mere phantoms, and if Seiun Ryoka were not the world-famous five-crown queen, they might well have mocked her outright. At this point in time, Japanese horse girls had still not caught up to the international elite.
Ryoka, however, could not have cared less.
That was the privilege of not being an ordinary horse girl.
In the violent rainstorm, the red signal of readiness suddenly lit up, and the runners all lowered themselves into their starting stances.
The instant the gates flew open, crimson light blazed out—not a gate skill, but the unmistakable sign of an all-out burst.
An invisible pressure exploded outward. The powerful wind pressure released from the stalls forcibly checked the rain itself, twisting and even tearing apart the downpour.
Even the other horse girls' starts were thrown into disarray, one after another missing their break.
Amid this utterly one-sided suppression, only two horse girls managed to overcome the impact of Ryoka's start through sheer ability alone. They plunged into the rain at once, opening the chase through the storm.
One was named Caviar Essence.
The other was Winx.
They were legends of Australia.
