And so, Seiun Ryoka and Meiyan Shike established the beginnings of a friendship. Ryoka asked her to give Cuihe a little guidance, so the girl could adapt more smoothly to the French turf and set her sights on the Prix Morny.
But from Meiyan Shike's point of view, there was no need whatsoever for someone as overwhelmingly dominant as Seiun Ryoka to come asking her for help. Three straight victories were already more than enough to prove Ryoka's absolute authority over French sprint racing.
The Prix Morny might indeed be a GI, but it was ultimately still a race aimed at younger girls. A horse girl like Seiun Ryoka should have no trouble at all grasping the key points of the race and coaching Cuihe to victory herself.
Seeking help from an outsider? Completely unnecessary.
For all she knew, that outsider's understanding might not even compare to Ryoka's own. So Meiyan Shike's first instinct was to refuse. She had no desire to show off clumsy skills in front of a master.
Besides, she and Ryoka hardly knew each other. How could she possibly entrust herself with something this important? True, horse girls could become friends outside of racing, and the other girls following Ryoka would remain in France with Cuihe to cheer her on.
Even so, this still felt inappropriate.
Meiyan Shike hesitated, mainly because she really was not close to Ryoka. If she rashly accepted, some of the French elite stables might take offense.
Ryoka, however, saw straight through that hesitation. She reached out and seized both of Meiyan Shike's hands, her broad, pale palms pressing close over the other girl's, crimson eyes fixed firmly on her gaze as she pleaded,
"I just think Meiyan is amazing, so I wanted to ask for your help. Is that not allowed?"
Rather than allowed or not, the request was almost unfairly hard to refuse.
There were no suitable GIs for Meiyan Shike in the immediate future, sure—but she could easily have gone off to run a GII or GIII, rebuilt her form, and refocused herself. Why should she agree to this instead?
And yet, under Ryoka's earnest stare, Meiyan Shike found herself at a loss. She had meant to decline, but the words simply would not come out, as though she could not bear to disappoint her.
Even though they were not close at all.
Does this girl carry some kind of power that makes people incapable of refusing her? Meiyan Shike wondered.
Otherwise, why on earth would she care so much about Seiun Ryoka's opinion? Should not planning her own campaign matter more?
Then, in the middle of her thoughts, Meiyan Shike suddenly noticed something.
The horse girls traveling with Ryoka were looking at her with very peculiar expressions—some dissatisfied, some envious.
A swell of delight immediately rose in her chest.
She pulled her hands back from Ryoka's grip—then, the next moment, took them again of her own accord, answering in an excited tone,
"Since you've put it that way, Ryoka, it would feel downright rude of me to keep refusing. Please take care of me from here on out, Ryoka~"
Meiyan Shike smiled at Ryoka as she spoke, but the corner of her eye kept sliding toward the other girls.
Just as she had expected, the moment they saw her pressing for more, the others showed varying degrees of displeasure, which only made her feel even more pleased.
A few even wore the sort of complicated expression that all but said, That could have been me instead…
But that hardly mattered.
Most of the horse girls around Ryoka had not even debuted yet, and among them, the only ones truly familiar with French turf were Wangzu and Zhuofu.
If Ryoka wanted to entrust something important to someone, then Meiyan Shike really was the most suitable choice.
Thinking that, the smile on Meiyan Shike's face grew more radiant still.
Thus the girls trained in France for a week.
During that time, Airi Sokushi was busy to the point of collapse, determined to construct an equation leading Cuihe to victory and crush Meiyan Shike's "arrogance."
Perhaps it was because Meiyan Shike's figure was even more outrageous than the noblewoman's?
Ryoka herself did not think about it that deeply. She simply returned to Britain with Chihaya Yui and then used the International Stakes, a roughly 2000-meter turf race, to put on another magnificent display of absolute dominance—telling Britain and British horse girls alike:
Your Emperor has returned!
That was the headline the Times ran.
At first glance, it looked perfectly fine, but it thoroughly stunned the Daily Telegraph editorial staff, who desperately wanted to ask:
How is your headline exactly the same as ours? Have you all been collectively possessed by the Morning Star crowd or something?
Was not the Times supposed to be stirring up British horse girls, encouraging them to learn from Seiun Ryoka, and then quietly whipping their readers into petitioning for her to transfer to Britain instead?
