Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

WHISPERS

The moment Maya had stepped out of Alexander's office the previous afternoon, she had felt it.

The air had shifted.

People didn't openly stare, not yet. But conversations paused when she walked past. A few heads turned. and a few brows lifted. Then there were whispers following her like a shadow.

By the next morning, it was worse. She stood in the executive hallway, working, her mop gliding over polished marble floors that reflected the ceiling lights like mirrors. The building always smelled faintly of citrus disinfectant and expensive perfume. Today, it smelled like suspicion.

She kept her head down. Focus on work. Just work.

Two junior executives passed her slowly.

"Did you see her yesterday?" one whispered.

"In his office," the other replied. "For almost twenty minutes."

"Doing what?" A small laugh.

"She's just a cleaner."

Maya kept moving the mop in steady strokes, pretending she couldn't hear. She tightened her grip slightly.

She had worked in enough places to understand how this went. When someone from the "bottom" was suddenly seen near the top, people didn't assume it was based on competence. They assumed something else.

She pushed the bucket forward, Another voice was heard from behind.

"Maybe she spilled something and he had to yell at her."

"Please. If he was yelling, security would've escorted her out."

They lowered their voices, but not enough.

Maya straightened slowly and placed the mop back into the bucket.

Her chest felt tight. Not from shame.

Anger. But anger was expensive, she couldn't afford it.

Upstairs, Alexander was already in his office by 7:00 a.m.

He stood near the window, his sleeves slightly rolled up, reviewing market updates on his tablet. The city skyline looked sharp under the clear morning light.

No rain, He preferred days like this.

Mark entered quietly.

"Sir, the European investors confirmed next week's meeting."

Alexander nodded once.

"Reschedule the internal review to Friday."

"Yes, sir."

Mark hesitated.

"There's… chatter."

Alexander didn't look up.

"About?"

"The cleaning staff. Miss Bennett."

Now he looked up. His expression didn't change but something in his eyes sharpened.

"Clarify."

"She was seen leaving your office yesterday. Some employees are speculating."

Alexander walked around his desk slowly.

"Speculating about what?"

Mark chose his words carefully.

"That her promotion may not be… merit-based."

A long pause.

Alexander's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

"I don't tolerate disrespect," he said calmly.

"Yes, sir."

"And I don't make impulsive decisions."

"Of course not."

Alexander walked toward the window again.

"Prepare the paperwork."

"For her role?"

"Yes."

Mark nodded.

"Immediately."

As Mark left, Alexander's reflection stared back at him from the glass.

He wasn't naïve, he knew how this looked. But he also knew something else, The people whispering had never seen him shaking in the rain.

They had never seen him human. Maya had.

And that mattered more than gossip.

Maya was cleaning the conference room when she felt it again. A presence. She turned slowly.

Madeline Venn, the second wife of Alexander's father had noticed too.

She stood at the doorway. As elegant as always.

She wore a tailored cream suit, Diamond earrings that caught the light with Heels that clicked like warning bells on polished floors. Her eyes were cold and calculating.

Madeline didn't smile, She assessed.

Maya straightened immediately.

"Good morning, ma'am."

Madeline stepped inside slowly, her perfume subtle but sharp.

"You're Maya Bennett."

It wasn't a question.

"Yes, ma'am."

Madeline's gaze traveled from Maya's face down to her uniform and back up again.

"You've been here… almost a year?"

"Yes."

"And yesterday you were upstairs."

Maya swallowed lightly.

"Yes, ma'am. Mr. Venn asked to see me."

Madeline tilted her head slightly.

"And why would the CEO personally request a cleaner?"

Her tone wasn't loud. It didn't need to be.

Maya held her posture steady.

"I'm not sure I'm at liberty to discuss that."

That made Madeline pause.

Interesting.

"Liberty?" she repeated softly.

Maya realized her wording may have been too bold.

"I mean… I don't think it's my place."

Madeline took a step closer.

"You're ambitious."

"No, ma'am."

"Careful," Madeline corrected gently. "Ambition is not an insult."

"Alexander doesn't entertain distractions," Madeline continued. "He is disciplined. Focused. Structured."

Maya nodded quietly.

"Yes, ma'am."

"So if he's entertaining you, that makes you unusual."

Maya's heart thudded.

"I didn't ask for the meeting."

Madeline studied her for another long moment.

Then she smiled. But it didn't reach her eyes.

"Of course you didn't."

She turned and walked out.

The room felt heavier after she left. Maya exhaled slowly.

That hadn't been a warning. That had been a measurement.

Later that afternoon, Daniel Venn appeared.

He leaned casually against the hallway wall as Maya replaced a trash liner.

"You're very popular lately."

She didn't look up.

"I'm just doing my job, sir."

Daniel chuckled softly.

"That's what makes it impressive."

She finally looked at him.

"I don't understand."

"You don't?" His smile widened slightly. "You go from invisible to invited upstairs. That's quite the career jump."

Her stomach tightened.

"I haven't accepted anything."

"Accepted?" His eyebrow lifted. "So there is something to accept."

Silence. She had said too much.

Daniel stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"Let me give you advice."

She stayed still.

"People rise fast in this building," he continued. "But they fall faster."

His gaze lingered on her face.

"And the higher the floor… the harder the fall."

Then he walked away.

Maya stood there gripping the trash bag tightly.

Her hands were trembling now.

Not from fear. From pressure.

That evening, she was called upstairs again.

This time she felt every eye on her as she entered the elevator.

When the doors opened, Mark greeted her with a polite nod.

"He's waiting."

She stepped inside Alexander's office.

He was seated behind his desk.

Calm and Collected. Untouched by gossip.

"Close the door," he said gently.

She did.

He studied her face for a moment.

"You were approached today."

It wasn't a question.

"Yes, Mr Venn."

"By my stepmother."

"Yes."

"And Daniel."

"Yes."

Alexander leaned back slowly.

"What did they say?"

Maya hesitated.

"Do you want the honest version?"

His eyes locked onto hers.

"Always."

"They were warning me," she said quietly. "Not directly. But clearly."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"They won't touch you."

She shook her head.

"That's not what worries me."

"Then what does?"

She swallowed.

"Being noticed."

Silence filled the room.

Alexander's expression shifted slightly.

"You don't want visibility?"

"I've survived by not being seen," she said honestly.

He stood slowly and walked around the desk.

Stopping a few feet in front of her.

"Visibility isn't always danger."

"For someone like you," she said softly. "Maybe."

That landed. He looked at her differently now.

Not as staff. As someone who understood survival.

"You think I don't understand danger?" he asked quietly.

She met his gaze.

"I think you're used to power. I'm not."

A long pause.

Then he said something that surprised her.

"Power didn't protect my mother."

Her breath caught slightly.

The vulnerability in his tone was brief but real.

"I'm not offering you a spotlight," he continued calmly. "I'm offering you protection."

Her heart skipped.

"Why?"

He didn't answer immediately. Because the truth was complicated. Because she had seen him at his weakest. Because she hadn't looked impressed. Because she had looked steady.

Instead, he said:

"Because you matter in this situation more than you realize."

Her pulse quickened.

"This isn't simple," she whispered.

"No," he agreed. "It isn't."

Outside the glass walls of his office, the building hummed with routine and rumors.

Inside, something had shifted.

And somewhere else in the building, Madeline stood by her own window, watching.

Calculating.

Shadows were forming. And Maya had just stepped into one.
