Chapter 5 - The words refuse to form

The idea of rejection sounded simple when spoken aloud.

It was anything but simple to do.

Aria stood at the edge of the training grounds just before dawn, the sky still a deep shade of blue. The pack was beginning to stir behind her — distant voices, the clang of weapons, the quiet rhythm of wolves preparing for another tense day.

War had not started yet.

But everyone could feel it coming.

She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ignore the constant awareness of him somewhere nearby. Since the night of her shift, the bond had only grown stronger.

It was like an invisible thread pulling at her with every breath.

"You chose an interesting place," Kael said.

She hadn't heard him approach.

She was starting to realize she never would.

Not anymore.

"This is where we settle things," she replied.

"Fights. Challenges. Decisions."

"And mates?"

She hesitated.

Her wolf stirred uneasily at the word.

"I don't know," she admitted.

"I've never had to think about mates before."

Kael stopped a few steps away. There was a careful distance between them now — not because they wanted it, but because being closer felt dangerous in ways neither fully understood yet.

"The elders say rejection must happen before sunrise," he said.

"Once the bond deepens, it becomes… complicated."

Aria let out a quiet breath.

Complicated was an understatement.

Her entire life had been built on loyalty to her pack. On honouring her father. On protecting their legacy.

But none of those lessons had prepared her for this.

Prepared her for the way her body reacted to Kael's presence.

For the strange comfort she felt when he spoke.

For the undeniable truth her wolf kept whispering.

He is yours.

She clenched her fists.

"We say the words," she said.

"That's all. Then we go back to being enemies."

Kael's expression didn't change, but something in his eyes darkened.

"If it were that easy," he murmured,

"we wouldn't be standing here."

Silence settled between them.

The sky grew lighter.

Time was running out.

Aria forced herself to meet his gaze.

"Then say it," she said softly.

For a long moment, he didn't move.

Didn't speak.

The bond between them pulsed — warm, insistent, almost pleading.

Finally, Kael took a breath.

"I—"

The word broke.

He stopped.

Tried again.

Nothing.

Frustration flickered across his face. Not weakness. Something deeper. As if he were fighting against an invisible force.

Aria felt the same resistance building inside her chest.

Her throat tightened.

The rejection words she had practiced all night suddenly felt impossible to remember.

Instead, she became painfully aware of how close he was standing now.

When had he moved?

Her pulse quickened.

"This is a mistake," she whispered.

"Yes," he said.

But he didn't step back.

Neither did she.

The first rays of sunlight touched the horizon.

And still… neither of them could say the words.

Somewhere beyond the training grounds, a horn sounded.

An alarm.

Aria's head snapped toward the noise.

Within seconds, wolves were shouting, running, shifting.

Scouts.

Enemies.

Or worse.

Kael's gaze hardened instantly, Alpha instincts taking over.

"This isn't over," he said quietly.

Aria nodded, though she wasn't sure what she was agreeing to anymore.

Because deep down, she already knew the truth.

The bond between them wasn't weakening.

It was only just beginning.
