Chapter 6 - THE SHATTERED PATH

Arin woke to a quiet hum.

The Hidden City was still alive, but this time it felt… uneasy. The silver threads of time above the streets rippled like nervous energy. Every pulse seemed to whisper warnings.

He sat up on a floating platform, muscles aching from the day before. His chest still throbbed from the surge of power, the lingering echo of the Guardian's attack. He had barely survived, barely controlled it. And yet… he couldn't stop thinking about it.

"That was incredible," Lira said, her voice soft but firm. She appeared beside him, eyes sharp. "But don't get cocky. That Guardian wasn't even close to the ones you'll face if the Chronarch decides to come himself."

Arin shook his head. "I know… I know. But I felt… alive. Like I was meant to do that."

"You are meant to do that," she said. "But power alone won't save you. You need control. Focus. Discipline."

Kairo appeared behind them, leaning casually against a twisting column of light. "And understanding. You don't just manipulate time. You become part of it. You feel its pulse, its fractures, its rhythm. That's how you survive in Aetherion."

Arin frowned. "Feel it…? I don't know if I can."

"You'll learn," Kairo said, his tone calm but warning heavy. "Or you'll die trying. Time here is alive. And it doesn't forgive mistakes."

They began walking through the streets again, the city bending and twisting around them. Arin noticed things he hadn't before:

A child suspended mid-air, reaching for a floating orb of seconds.

A merchant selling fragments of past memories like jewels.

Shadows crawling along walls, like whispers trying to escape reality.

"This place…" Arin whispered, awe-struck. "It's… insane."

"Insane," Lira agreed. "And dangerous. You're not ready to wander freely yet. We're taking you to the Shattered Path."

"The Shattered Path?" Arin asked.

Kairo's expression darkened. "It's a trial. A stretch of reality broken by centuries of time fractures. No one crosses it untrained. You'll face echoes, shadows, pieces of moments that don't belong anywhere. Some are harmless. Some… are deadly."

Arin's heart thumped. "I have to go?"

"You don't have a choice," Lira said. "If you want to survive… you must understand what Aetherion is. And that begins with the Shattered Path."

The entrance was terrifying.

The air shimmered violently. Paths twisted in impossible angles. Pieces of the ground hung suspended in mid-air, shifting without warning. Echoes of moments long gone—laughs, screams, whispers—spilled into the air.

Arin took a step forward.

His chest pulsed, the energy inside him responding.

"Remember," Kairo warned. "Focus. Every thought shapes reality here. Lose control, and it will shape you."

The first echo appeared—a young boy running through the path, laughing. Arin reached out instinctively, trying to stop him.

The echo froze. The boy's eyes locked on him, and then… shattered. Pieces of light and shadow collapsed into the ground like broken glass.

Arin stumbled back, heart pounding.

"Don't touch them unless you mean to," Lira said sharply. "These are fragments. Echoes of lives. Some are trapped. Some are dangerous. Some… are hunting you."

Before Arin could respond, a shadow moved. Faster than he could see. The air rippled violently. A Time Wraith—long, thin, twisted like broken clock hands—lunged at him.

Arin's chest pulsed. Without thinking, he stretched out his hand. The pulse of time inside him surged.

The Wraith froze mid-lunge. Its limbs twisted unnaturally as silver threads wrapped around it, binding it in place.

Arin's vision blurred. Every second felt like an hour. Every heartbeat like a lifetime.

The Wraith screamed, a sound that wasn't sound, and then… evaporated.

Arin dropped to his knees, trembling. "I… I did it again…"

Lira knelt beside him. "Yes… but listen. Every time you do that, you risk burning yourself out. The Chronarch can feel it too. He knows every fracture you make. And now… he's closer than ever."

Arin's stomach twisted. "Closer? How?"

Kairo's eyes glinted. "He's always watching. Every pulse, every fracture, every heartbeat you use… he knows. And he's waiting for the right moment."

A long silence fell. The Shattered Path pulsed around them, shadows shifting, echoes whispering.

Arin realized one terrifying truth: the longer he stayed here, the more the Chronarch would hunt him. And the more powerful he became… the greater the danger to everyone else.
