Chapter 3 - The Mark

I woke wrapped in him.

His arm across my waist. His chest against my back. His face buried in my hair, breathing slow and deep. Sometime in the night, we'd moved closer. Or maybe he'd pulled me in. Either way, I was surrounded…heat and muscle and the steady thump of his heart against my spine.

I should have moved. Should have slipped away before he woke.

Instead, I lay there, memorizing the feeling.

When had anyone last held me like this? Like I was precious? Like I was wanted? Derek had held me too before. But his arms had always felt like cages. Like possession without tenderness.

This was different.

This felt like home.

"You're awake."

His voice, rough with sleep, vibrated against my back. I felt every syllable.

"How do you know?"

"Your breathing changed." His arm tightened. "Also, your heart is racing."

Because you're pressed against me. Because I can feel everything. Because I've never woken up like this before.

"Sorry," I whispered. "I didn't mean to"

"Don't apologize." His lips brushed my shoulder. "This is the best morning I've had in ten years."

I turned in his arms. Faced him.

Bad idea.

He was right there. Inches away. Those gold eyes soft with sleep, his hair disheveled, his lips slightly parted. And his body. ….God, his body. Bare chest. Warm skin. The sheet had slipped, revealing the V of muscle that disappeared below his waist.

I looked away. Looked back. Couldn't help it.

"Elena." His voice was rough. "If you keep looking at me like that …"

"Like what?"

"Like you want to touch."

My face burned. "I wasn't…"

"You were." He caught my chin, made me meet his eyes. "It's okay. I want you to touch. I want you to do more than touch. But…." He swallowed. "Not yet. Not like this. Not when you're still figuring out what you want."

"What if I know what I want?"

His eyes darkened. "What do you want?"

You. I want you. I want to feel your skin against mine. I want to know what those scars feel like under my fingers. I want…..

"I don't know," I whispered. "I'm confused."

"Confused is okay." He released my chin, but his hand stayed on my face, thumb tracing my cheekbone. "Confused is normal. You've been through hell. You're in a strange place with strange people. And I'm….." He smiled. "A lot."

"You are."

"Too much?"

"Maybe." I leaned into his touch. "But also not enough."

Something flickered in his eyes. Hunger. Restraint. Need.

"Elena." His voice was barely a whisper. "If you keep saying things like that, I'm going to have a very hard time keeping my promise."

"What promise?"

"To wait."

Oh.

Oh.

I felt that everywhere.

We didn't move for a long time.

Just lay there, tangled together, breathing each other's air. His thumb traced lazy patterns on my cheek. My hand found its way to his chest…just resting there, feeling his heart pound.

"It's fast," I said finally. "This. Us. Too fast."

"I know."

"I don't even know you."

"You know enough." He covered my hand with his. "You know I'd die for you. You know I'd kill for you. You know I've waited ten years and I'll wait ten more if that's what you need."

"That's not….." I stopped. "That's not normal."

"I'm not normal." He smiled. "I'm a wolf. We feel things differently. Deeper. Stronger. When I say you're mine, I mean it in ways humans can't understand."

"Explain it."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "When a wolf finds his mate, something happens inside. A bond forms. Invisible but real. I can feel you now ,your emotions, your pain, your fear. When you're happy, I'm happy. When you're scared, I'm desperate to protect you."

"That's…."

"Intense. I know." He kissed my forehead. "But it's also beautiful. Because I'll never have to wonder what you're feeling. I'll never have to guess. I'll just..know."

"That sounds terrifying."

"It is." He met my eyes. "But it's also the greatest gift the Moon can give. To be so connected to someone that you're never truly alone."

Never alone.

I'd been alone for so long. Even with Derek, I'd been alone trapped, isolated, desperate. But this? This was different.

This was being seen.

We finally got up.

He made breakfast again. I watched again. But this time, when he caught me staring, I didn't look away.

"See something you like?" he asked.

"See something I'm starting to want."

He went still. The spatula hovered.

"Elena."

"I'm not saying" I shook my head. "I don't know what I'm saying. I just. ….when I'm near you, I feel things I've never felt before. And it's scary. But it's also…"

"What?"

"Good." I met his eyes. "It feels good."

He crossed the room in two strides. Pulled me up from the chair. His hands framed my face, gentle but urgent.

"Tell me you're sure."

"I'm not sure of anything."

"Then tell me you want this. Want me. Even a little."

I looked at him. At this impossible man with his impossible eyes and his impossible patience.

"I want you," I whispered. "I don't understand it. I don't know if it's real or if it's just…..whatever this bond does. But I want you."

He kissed me.

Not like before. This was different. Hungrier. His mouth claimed mine like he'd been starving for it. His hands slid into my hair, tilted my head back, took control.

I melted.

Every thought fled. Every fear dissolved. There was only this his lips, his tongue, his body pressed against mine. I clung to him, made sounds I didn't recognize, felt heat building where I'd never let anyone go.

He pulled back just enough to breathe.

"Elena." His voice was wrecked. "If we keep going..."

"Keep going."

"I can't.....I won't be able to stop."

"I don't want you to stop."

He groaned. Dropped his forehead to mine.

"You don't know what you're asking."

"Then tell me."

He pulled back. Looked at me with those burning gold eyes.

"If we do this…..if I claim you…..there's no going back. The bond locks into place. You'll feel everything I feel. I'll feel everything you feel. And I'll never be able to let you go."

"Never?"

"Never." His thumb traced my lower lip. "Even if you leave. Even if you hate me. The bond doesn't break. Ever."

I thought about it. About being tied to someone forever. About never being able to escape.

About never wanting to.

"What if I don't want to leave?"

His eyes flared.

"What if I want to stay?" I continued. "What if I want to be yours….really yours..,and I want you to be mine?"

"Elena…"

"I've been alone my whole life. Even when I wasn't alone, I was alone. Derek took everything…my freedom, my safety, my sense of self." I touched his face. "You give it back. Just by looking at me. Just by being here."

He kissed me again. Desperate. Worshipful.

"Mine," he growled against my mouth. "Mine."

"Yours."

He carried me to the bedroom.

Not his ,mine. The one I'd slept in that first night. Laid me on the bed like I was made of glass.

"Last chance," he whispered. "Tell me to stop."

I pulled him down instead.

His weight settled over me so much bigger, so much stronger, but so careful. So gentle. He kissed me like I was precious. Touched me like I was sacred.

His hands found the hem of my shirt. Slid underneath. His skin against mine hot, electric, perfect.

"Kael."

"Tell me what you want."

"You. Everything."

He pulled back just enough to look at me. Those gold eyes burning.

"I'm going to claim you, Elena. Mark you. Make you mine in every way." His voice was rough. "But first, I'm going to worship you. Show you what it means to be wanted. Really wanted."

I couldn't speak. Could only nod.

He lowered his head. Kissed my collarbone. Trailed lower.

And showed me exactly what he meant.

The soft glow of moonlight filtered through the cabin's windows, bathing the fur-covered bed in a silvery haze. Elena lay beneath Kael, her Alpha, her heart racing with a potent mix of anticipation and nerves. They were already entangled on the bed, his powerful body hovering over hers, their clothes shed in a frenzy of heated kisses that had led them here. This was their first time the sacred union of mates, where the bond would be forged in flesh and fang.

Kael's golden eyes burned with restrained hunger as he gazed down at her, his hand cradling the curve of her cheek. "Elena," he murmured, his voice a deep rumble that sent shivers through her. "You're everything I've dreamed of. Are you ready?"

She nodded, her fingers threading through his dark, tousled hair, pulling him down for a kiss that deepened instantly. His lips were firm and demanding, tasting of wild berries and the earthy scent of the forest. Elena's body arched toward him, her bare skin flushing under his touch as his hands roamed tracing the swell of her breasts, teasing her hardened nipples until she gasped into his mouth.

He broke the kiss to trail his lips along her jaw, down the column of her throat, nipping lightly at her pulse point. "So beautiful," he growled, his calloused palms sliding over her hips, parting her thighs with gentle insistence. Elena's breath hitched as he settled between her legs, his thick arousal pressing hot and insistent against her core. She was slick with need, the mate bond humming between them like a live wire, urging her to surrender.

Kael's fingers explored her first, parting her folds to circle the sensitive pearl at her center. He watched her face, learning every hitch of breath, every flutter of her lashes as he stroked her with expert care. "That's it, love," he encouraged, dipping one finger inside her warmth, then two, stretching her slowly. Elena moaned, her hips rising to meet his hand, the building pleasure coiling tight in her belly. It was new, overwhelming the stretch, the fullness but the trust in his eyes made it intoxicating.

When she was trembling, on the cusp of release, Kael withdrew his fingers and positioned himself at her entrance. "Look at me," he commanded softly, his voice laced with Alpha authority yet tender. Their gazes locked, and he pushed forward, inch by deliberate inch, breaching her for the first time. Elena cried out at the sharp sting that quickly melted into a profound ache of completion. He was large, filling her completely, but he paused, buried deep, letting her adjust.

"Breathe," he whispered, capturing her lips again as he began to move slow, shallow thrusts that built into a steady rhythm. Elena's nails raked down his broad back, marked with the scars of past hunts, as pleasure overtook the discomfort. Their bodies synced, hips grinding together, the room echoing with the wet sounds of their joining, her soft whimpers blending with his guttural groans.

Faster now, Kael's control frayed, his wolf rising as the bond demanded consummation. He hiked her legs higher around his waist, driving deeper, hitting that spot inside her that made stars burst behind her eyes. Elena shattered first, her climax crashing over her in waves, her inner walls clenching around him like a vice. "Kael!" she screamed, lost in the ecstasy.

In that vulnerable peak, Kael's fangs elongated, gleaming white in the moonlight. With a possessive snarl, he leaned down, his mouth finding the curve of her shoulder. He bit down not savagely, but with the precision of the mark his teeth piercing her skin as he thrust one final time. The pain was fleeting, transformed by the rush of their bond into searing pleasure that prolonged her orgasm. Power surged through them, sealing her as his forever, as he spilled inside her with a thunderous roar, his body shuddering against hers.

They collapsed in a tangle of limbs, Kael's tongue lapping gently at the fresh bite, already knitting the wound into a raised, iridescent scar. He pulled her close, nuzzling her neck. "My mate," he breathed, satisfaction rumbling in his chest. Elena smiled weakly, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his skin, the warmth of him chasing away any lingering ache. In his arms, under the watchful moon, she felt whole claimed, cherished, and utterly his.

Hours later, I lay tangled in him, sweaty and satisfied and utterly wrecked.

His arm was around me. His lips pressed occasional kisses to my shoulder. His heart thundered against my back, matching mine.

"That was..." I couldn't find words.

"I know." He sounded as wrecked as I felt. "I know."

"Was that…,is it always like that?"

"With a mate?" He kissed my shoulder. "Always. But with us " He pulled me closer. "We're something special, Elena. I felt it the moment I saw you."

I turned in his arms. Looked at him.

"I felt it too. I just didn't understand."

"And now?"

"And now I understand." I touched his face. "You're mine."

Something fierce and beautiful crossed his features.

"Say it again."

"You're mine, Kael. My mate. My wolf. Mine."

He kissed me. Long and deep.

"Yours," he agreed. "Forever."
