"Can you two walk from here?" Jake asked, bringing the Rolls-Royce to a smooth stop near the public park a block away from Ethan's house.
"Yeah, this works," Ethan replied, glancing sideways at him.
Jake offered a faint, unreadable smile. "Good. I have somewhere else to be."
Ethan unbuckled his seatbelt and opened the passenger door. In the back, Madison fixed Jake with a sharp glare before sliding out as well. Without another word, the luxury sedan pulled away from the curb, disappearing into the morning traffic.
Ethan shook his head, running a hand through his hair before checking his phone screen. "It's 9:00 AM."
He turned to Madison with a faint smile. "Breakfast? My treat."
Madison nodded softly, stepping up beside him as they began walking down the tree-lined sidewalk. "You and Jake... are you two actually working together?"
Ethan pondered the question for a moment before shaking his head. "Nah... I don't think so. Why would we?"
Madison looked at him intently, searching his face.
"You were right about him, Madison. He's suspicious, very suspicious," Ethan admitted, his voice dropping slightly. "But I'm only dealing with him because he holds answers to my past... answers I need to find out."
Madison gave a quiet nod of understanding. "We don't know what the future holds."
Ethan stopped in his tracks, frowning as she stepped ahead of him. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Madison glanced back over her shoulder, shaking her head. "Nothing."
Ethan caught up to her, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "You know... you sounded just like Jake right then."
"I am nothing like him," Madison shot back instantly.
Ethan chuckled gently. "Fair enough. By the way... did you know Jake had personal connections to the British Royal Family?"
Madison shook her head. "Back at the event, I assumed he was attending in place of my father. But when the King himself came over and sat with him... I realized there was a lot more going on."
"Yeah," Ethan muttered, falling into step beside her. "Let's drop it for now. When does school start back up?"
"The other district schools reopen in a couple of days," Madison replied. "I think ours will announce classes starting tomorrow."
The two continued chatting comfortably as they made their way to a local diner down the street.
After finishing breakfast, they parted ways near Madison's neighborhood, which was just a short distance from the café.
The moment Ethan opened his front door, Selena stepped out from the kitchen, wiping her hands on an apron.
"Ethan! You're back?" she asked, walking toward him with concern turning into relief.
"Yeah, Mom. Sorry about that," Ethan said, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly. "I was hanging out with some friends and lost track of time. Forgot to call."
Selena smiled warmly, reaching out to pat his shoulder. "It's no problem at all, sweetheart. As long as you're safe and happy, that's all that matters."
Looking into her kind eyes, a wave of guilt washed over Ethan.
If only she knew what I was actually doing out there...
Later that afternoon, a notification from the high school confirmed Madison's prediction: classes were officially resuming the following morning.
Over the Next Few Weeks
Life returned to a peaceful, steady rhythm.
Every morning, Ethan walked to school alongside Daisy, stepping back into the routine of a normal high school student. In the evenings, he frequented Benson's MMA gym, pushing his body through brutal conditioning and sparring sessions. Madison joined him at the gym regularly, training side-by-side on the heavy bags and mats.
After workouts, the two would grab dinner together at local diners before heading home. They had also made another friends.
To Ethan's immense relief, the agonizing bodily backlash from his berserk state never returned. His vitals remained stable, his body felt lighter, and for the first time in months, the shadows of the Syndicate felt far away.
Life was moving forward.
Elsewhere
Double doors creaked open into a cavernous, high-ceilinged hall. Heavy rain lashed against the massive glass skylights above, where moonlight broke through the storm clouds.
The tactical squad that had previously swept the Second Branch crater stepped inside, their boots echoing against the polished marble floor.
At the far end of the room stood a man on an elevated eight-step dais, his back turned to the squad as he stared out a floor-to-ceiling glass window into the pouring rain. Beside him, resting on an ornate obsidian desk, was a plain, white, featureless mask.
The operatives snapped to attention in a sharp line.
"Boss," the team leader called out, bowing his head. "Team Razor A reporting."
The man standing by the window offered a slight nod, his hands resting casually inside his pockets—radiating an aura of complete, untouchable authority.
"Boss, we conducted a full-spectrum sweep of the Second Branch crater over the past several days, as instructed," the leader continued, hesitation creeping into his tone. "However... we couldn't recover any surviving hard drives or research samples."
The man shook his head slowly, his voice dripping with smooth disdain. "How disappointing..."
"Forgive us, Boss!" the team leader said quickly. "We will do better next time!"
"Was there truly nothing of value remaining in that ash?" the man asked, still staring out into the rain.
"Boss, we did find clear tactical footprints," the leader reported. "Traces indicate that another party breached the ruins immediately after the detonation... right before our arrival."
The man waved a dismissive hand. "Leave."
"Understood, Boss." The team leader bowed deeply and retreated with his squad, the heavy doors sealing shut behind them.
Once the room was silent again, the man turned around slowly. He reached out to the obsidian colored desk, picking up the white mask and slipping it over his face.
Behind the dark eye slits, two luminous red eyes ignited in the dim light.
He settled smoothly into the high-backed chair at the center of the dais.
Loop's Second Branch has been erased from the map, thought Jacob, the supreme leader of the Shadow Syndicate.
A major blow to their core infrastructure... and a massive opportunity for us.
He leaned back, a cold, predatory smile spreading beneath the white mask.
"The only way to claim Professor Philip's research now... is to rip it from Loop's remaining hands myself," Jacob murmured into the empty hall.
His soft laughter echoed off the marble walls, sharp and terrifying.
"Shall I devour Loop now?"
