Chapter 1 - chapter 1

The city skyline glittered like a constellation of ambition, glass towers reflecting the golden sunset. At the heart of it all, Kyle Brook, the 25-year-old CEO of Brook Enterprises, stood by his office window, arms crossed, staring at the horizon.

To the outside world, he was untouchable—handsome, wealthy, confident—but inside, a storm of unspoken feelings churned quietly.

He had seen her twice now.

Tory Brown, the new intern, was unlike anyone he had ever met.

Brave, kind, and unafraid to challenge him—sometimes with a daring smirk that made his heart race despite himself. Kyle had managed to keep his secret well-hidden; no one at Brook Enterprises suspected the billionaire CEO harbored a crush on the shy yet daring twenty-year-old. Not even his closest friends.

Today was different. Tory was scheduled to meet him about a report she had prepared. Kyle's usual calm composure felt a little off as he waited. When the knock came at the door, he straightened, giving his usual polite smile.

"Come in," he said, trying to keep his voice steady.

Tory entered, clutching a folder, her hair slightly messy from the wind outside. She looked nervous but determined. "Good afternoon, Mr. Brook," she said, her voice soft but clear.

"Kyle," he corrected automatically, the informal tone slipping out before he realized. His heart skipped.

She blinked, slightly surprised, then smiled. "Kyle, okay… I mean, thanks for meeting with me."

He gestured to the chair opposite his desk. "Have a seat. Let's see what you've got."

As she spread out the documents, Kyle couldn't help but notice her passion in every word, the way she explained her points with clarity and confidence. "You've done excellent work," he said, sincerely. "Most interns don't take the time to think this thoroughly."

Tory's eyes lit up, a mix of pride and modesty. "Thank you… it means a lot coming from you."

For a brief moment, the office felt smaller, the world outside fading. Kyle wanted to reach out, to tell her how he truly felt, but professionalism held him back. That's when the door burst open with a loud laugh that made both of them turn.

"Talking about me?" a sweet, yet venom-tinged voice said. Tory's smile faltered as a striking young woman with sharp features and flawless style stepped in—Liana Grey, Kyle's 19-year-old step-sister.

Kyle's jaw tightened slightly. Liana always had a way of appearing when she wasn't wanted. "Liana, this is a work meeting," he said, keeping his tone controlled.

"Of course, of course," Liana purred, her gaze sweeping over Tory in a way that made the younger woman tense. "But I couldn't resist saying hello. It's always… interesting, meeting the people my stepbrother seems to admire."

Kyle gave her a warning look, but Liana ignored it, her smile wide and sly. Tory swallowed nervously, gripping the folder a little tighter.

Liana's presence lingered like a shadow, and Kyle felt an unfamiliar surge of protectiveness. He stood, blocking her subtly. "Tory, would you excuse us for a moment?"

Tory nodded and left the office, glancing back at him with a curious smile.

Once the door clicked shut, Kyle turned to face his step-sister. "What do you want, Liana?"

"Just a little chat," she said innocently. But her eyes sparkled with mischief, and Kyle knew better.

Some battles, he realized, were just beginning… and not all enemies wore obvious masks
