Chapter 46 - Echoes of the lost

The forest had gone silent.

Too silent.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate before passing through the dead trees. Nightfall Kingdom stood together, but something about the atmosphere felt… wrong. The kind of wrong that made your instincts scream even when nothing was visible.

It had been hours since Daniel ran off.

Mary hadn't said anything since then.

"Should we go after him?" Lily finally asked, her voice low.

"No," Zoya replied immediately, though her eyes showed hesitation. "If we split now, we're only making things worse."

David looked around, uneasy.

"…We're already being watched."

Everyone turned toward him.

"What do you mean?" Felix asked.

David frowned slightly. "That presence from yesterday… it's still here. But it's different now. It's not attacking. It's… observing."

A chill ran through the group.

Daniel – Alone in the Shadows

Deep inside the forest, Daniel walked without direction.

His thoughts were louder than the silence.

You are not strong enough yet…

Thrones' voice echoed again.

Daniel clenched his jaw. "Then make me strong enough."

No response.

He stopped.

"Why are you choosing me?" he asked into the emptiness.

For a moment… nothing.

Then—

"Because you can survive it."

Daniel's breath slowed.

"What does that even mean?"

But the voice didn't answer again.

Instead—

A faint sound.

Not wind.

Not footsteps.

Something else.

Daniel turned sharply.

And then he saw it.

A flicker.

A shadow moving unnaturally against the trees.

His instincts kicked in immediately.

"Who's there?!"

No answer.

But the shadow didn't disappear this time.

It stayed.

Watching.

Back at Camp

"We can't just sit here!" Mary finally snapped, standing up suddenly.

Everyone looked at her.

"He's not okay," she continued. "You all saw that. That wasn't just exhaustion or stress. Something is happening to him."

Zoya stepped forward.

"And if we all rush blindly into the forest, what then?"

Mary didn't reply.

Because she knew Zoya was right.

But still—

Her fists tightened.

"I'm going," she said.

Before anyone could stop her—

A sudden sound echoed through the forest.

A sharp, distorted transmission.

"…All teams… report status…"

It was the host's voice.

Broken. Glitching.

Everyone froze.

"…Dawn Kingdom… still missing…"

Static.

"…unidentified activity detected…"

Then silence again.

David's expression changed instantly.

"That's not normal."

"What do you mean?" Lucy asked.

"The system isn't supposed to glitch like that," David replied. "Someone is interfering."

Zoya's eyes narrowed.

"…Or controlling it."

The Shadow Reveals

Back where Daniel stood—

The shadow stepped forward.

Not fully visible.

But not fully hidden either.

A human shape.

But wrong.

Distorted… like reality itself didn't accept it.

Daniel's grip tightened around Thrones.

"Are you… from him?"

The figure tilted its head slightly.

Then—

A voice.

Not spoken.

But heard directly inside Daniel's mind.

"You shouldn't be here alone."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"…Who are you?"

No answer.

Instead—

The figure raised its hand.

And suddenly—

The forest changed.

The ground beneath Daniel cracked slightly.

The air became heavier.

And then—

Voices.

Multiple voices.

Weak.

Faint.

"…help…"

"…someone…"

"…please…"

Daniel froze.

"That's—"

His heart skipped.

"Dawn Kingdom…"

The Truth Unfolds

The shadow stepped aside.

And for a moment—

Daniel saw it.

A glimpse.

Not fully clear.

But enough.

Chains of dark energy.

Figures trapped within.

Barely moving.

Barely alive.

His fists clenched.

"You did this?"

Silence.

Then—

"No."

The answer came.

"They were brought here."

Daniel's mind raced.

"By who?"

The shadow didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

It leaned slightly closer.

And whispered—

"You already know."

Daniel's breath caught.

"…Caden."

The air shifted again.

And suddenly—

The presence intensified.

Stronger than before.

Colder.

Darker.

The shadow stepped back.

"Run."

Daniel didn't hesitate.

The Team Moves

Back at the camp—

Mary suddenly stopped.

Her eyes widened.

"…Daniel."

"What?" Lucy asked.

"He's nearby."

Everyone looked at her.

"How do you—"

"I don't know," Mary interrupted. "I just… feel it."

David looked around again.

"…Then we don't wait anymore."

Zoya nodded.

"Everyone together."

Felix cracked his knuckles slightly.

"Finally."

They moved.

Fast.

Silent.

Focused.

Clash of Fate

Daniel ran.

The forest behind him felt like it was collapsing.

The presence chasing him wasn't a normal ghost.

It was heavier.

More controlled.

More aware.

Then—

He stopped.

Because suddenly—

They were there.

Mary.

Zoya.

Everyone.

"Daniel!"

Mary rushed toward him.

He barely managed to say—

"Don't—"

But it was too late.

The presence arrived.

A massive distortion formed behind them.

And from it—

A figure emerged.

Not fully visible.

But far more real than before.

Everyone stepped back instinctively.

"That's not a normal ghost…" Felix whispered.

The figure didn't move.

But its voice filled the air—

"Daniel Williams…"

Everyone froze.

Mary grabbed Daniel's arm tightly.

"…stay back," she whispered.

But Daniel didn't move.

Because deep inside—

He knew.

This wasn't just an enemy.

This was a message.

Ending Hook

The figure slowly raised its hand.

"Come to me willingly…"

Its voice echoed in every direction.

"…and they live."

Silence.

Then—

A faint scream echoed from the forest.

Not from here.

Far away.

But real.

Mary's grip tightened.

"…Dawn Kingdom…"

Daniel closed his eyes for a second.

And when he opened them—

There was no hesitation left.
