Chapter 4 - The Roar That Ruined My Evening

The store trembled again.

Not a polite little shake.

Not the kind you could blame on a passing truck or a subway rumbling underground.

This one felt like something outside had just punched the building.

Hard.

The windows rattled violently.

A stack of canned coffee collapsed somewhere behind the counter with a metallic avalanche.

Everyone inside the convenience store froze.

Kai Akira stood in the middle of the aisle holding his broom in one hand… and his bento in the other.

The room went silent.

Then the roar came again.

Deep.

Massive.

The kind of sound that made your bones feel like they were vibrating.

Kai blinked.

Slowly.

"…Please tell me that was a truck."

Nobody answered.

Outside the store, the street had turned into pure chaos.

People were running.

A taxi had stopped sideways in the middle of the road.

Someone was screaming.

A car alarm began blaring hysterically.

The gamer from earlier slowly stood up from behind the snack display.

His face had gone pale.

"Yeah," he said quietly.

"That wasn't a truck."

A blue window suddenly flickered into existence in front of Kai's eyes again.

Then another.

And another.

More messages began appearing rapidly.

Emergency Event Detected

Dimensional Rift Expanding

Monster Spawn Active

Kai squinted at the floating windows.

"Oh good," he muttered.

"The apocalypse has patch notes."

Behind him, the cashier cautiously raised his head from behind the counter.

"…Are we… dying?"

The gamer looked out the window again.

"Statistically speaking?" he said.

"Probably."

Kai sighed.

He glanced down at the bento still in his hands.

"Well," he said thoughtfully, "this is awkward timing."

Another message flashed in front of him.

Level Up

Kai Akira — Level 2

Kai stared at the notification.

Then he slowly nodded.

"Great."

He gestured vaguely toward the chaos outside.

"I leveled up before finishing dinner."

Suddenly the front door burst open.

A blur of brown fur shot inside the store.

Several people screamed.

The blur launched across the room and landed squarely on Kai's shoulder.

Kai staggered slightly under the sudden weight.

"…What."

A small monkey clung to him like a terrified backpack.

Its eyes were wide.

Its tail wrapped around Kai's neck like a safety belt.

The monkey looked toward the door.

Then back at Kai.

Then toward the door again.

It began pointing frantically outside while making panicked screeching sounds.

Kai blinked.

He looked at the monkey.

The monkey looked at him.

Kai sighed deeply.

"Oh good," he said.

"Now I have emotional support wildlife."

The monkey screeched again and pointed toward the door even harder.

Another roar echoed outside.

This one louder.

Much closer.

The floor shook again.

Shelves rattled.

Kai turned his head slowly.

Just in time to see something huge slam into the side of the building.

The entire convenience store jolted violently.

Shelves tipped.

Products flew everywhere.

Someone crashed into the drink cooler.

The ramen shelf collapsed.

And the shelf holding Kai's bento…

gave way.

Kai watched it happen in slow motion.

The container slipped from his hand.

The plastic lid popped open.

Rice scattered across the floor.

The grilled salmon slid gracefully across the tile like a tragic ice skater.

And came to rest near the base of the shelf.

Everything went quiet in Kai's head.

The monkey slowly looked down.

Kai stared at the ruined bento.

His voice became very calm.

Very quiet.

"…you monster."

Outside, the massive creature roared again.

Kai didn't look up.

He crouched slowly.

Picked up the empty bento container.

Rice grains clung sadly to the plastic.

The monkey watched him carefully.

Kai's eye twitched.

Once.

Twice.

A new system window flickered into existence.

Emotion Detected: Extreme

Adrenaline Response Triggered

Kai stood up slowly.

He gripped the broom.

Very slowly.

Very tightly.

"That," he said quietly, "was dinner."

The monkey nodded aggressively.

The gamer stepped forward nervously.

"Hey, uh… buddy?"

Kai walked toward the front door.

The gamer grabbed his arm.

"WAIT!"

Kai stopped.

The gamer pointed outside.

"Whatever made that roar…"

He swallowed hard.

"That thing will kill you."

Kai gently removed the gamer's hand.

His expression calm.

Completely calm.

"It ruined my evening."

He stepped toward the doorway.

The monkey clinging tightly to his shoulder.

Outside the convenience store, the nearby park shook violently.

Trees bent.

Something massive moved between them.

Two enormous glowing eyes opened in the darkness.

Kai looked at the broom in his hand.

Then at the monster.

Then at the ruined bento container still clutched in his other hand.

He exhaled slowly.

The system window flashed again.

New Skill Awakening

Condition: Emotional Catalyst

Kai stepped outside.

The wind carried the sound of the creature moving through the trees.

The monkey trembled on his shoulder.

Kai stared at the approaching monster.

And whispered quietly,

"…Now I'm angry."
