Chapter 4 - the law of this world

The forest had changed.

Or rather… Kael had.

Each step he took now was quieter, more controlled, as if his body instinctively understood how to move without drawing attention. The damp ground no longer felt unstable beneath his feet, and the tangled roots that had once slowed him down were now nothing more than obstacles his body adjusted to automatically. Even the air seemed clearer, every movement within it sharper and easier to read.

It had only been a short time since he woke up in this world.

And yet—

"I'm already different…" he muttered under his breath.

Not just stronger.

Not just faster.

Better.

Kael paused for a moment, his gaze shifting to his hand as he slowly opened and closed his fingers. The cuts from earlier were gone. Not even a scar remained. His breathing was steady, his body light, his senses alert in a way that felt almost unnatural.

Two fights.

Two absorptions.

And already this much change.

"…This is dangerous," he said quietly.

But there was no fear in his voice.

Only awareness.

Because now he understood something important.

This world had rules.

And he was starting to see them.

---

Kael crouched slightly, placing a hand against the ground. The soil was still damp, but beneath that he could feel something else—subtle, almost invisible.

Energy.

It flowed through everything.

The trees.

The air.

The ground itself.

"…Magic," he whispered.

Even without being told, he knew that was what it was.

And more importantly—

He could sense it.

Mente Analitica Suprema attiva.

Information organized itself instantly.

Ambient energy density: low to moderate.

Absorption possible. Efficiency: minimal.

"…So I can even absorb this?" Kael murmured.

He focused slightly.

At first, nothing happened.

Then—very faintly—he felt it.

A slow, almost insignificant flow of energy being drawn into his body.

"…This is way slower than absorbing monsters."

Which meant one thing.

If he wanted to grow fast—

He had to fight.

Kael stood up again, exhaling slowly as his eyes scanned the forest ahead.

"This world really is simple," he said.

Kill.

Absorb.

Evolve.

A brutal system.

But clear.

And in a strange way… fair.

---

A sudden gust of wind passed through the trees, making the leaves rustle loudly for a brief moment. Kael's eyes sharpened instantly.

"…Something's coming."

This time, the presence was different.

Heavier.

Slower.

But far more noticeable.

The ground trembled slightly.

Step.

…Step.

Kael didn't move.

He waited.

From between the trees, a large figure slowly emerged.

"…That's new."

It was massive—at least twice Kael's height, with a thick, muscular body covered in rough, stone-like skin. Its arms were long and heavy, dragging slightly as it moved, and its face was barely human, distorted into something monstrous with deep-set eyes and a wide, jagged mouth.

A humanoid.

But not human.

Analysis in progress.

High durability. High strength. Low speed. Low intelligence.

Kael exhaled quietly.

"…So a tank type."

The creature stopped as soon as it noticed him.

For a brief moment—

They simply stared at each other.

Then it roared.

A deep, violent sound that shook the air around them.

"…Yeah, I figured," Kael muttered.

The creature charged.

Heavy steps crushed the ground beneath it as it rushed forward with surprising speed for its size.

Kael didn't panic.

Didn't rush.

Didn't run.

Instead—

He stepped forward.

Test it.

The creature swung its massive arm downward, aiming to crush him completely.

Kael moved.

Fast.

Much faster than before.

His body reacted smoothly, dodging the attack with minimal movement as the creature's fist slammed into the ground, sending dirt and debris flying.

"…Slow," Kael said calmly.

Too slow.

But—

He noticed something.

The impact.

The force behind it.

If that hits directly… I'm dead.

No room for mistakes.

---

The creature attacked again, swinging wildly this time, trying to catch him with brute force.

Kael weaved through the attacks, his movements precise, efficient.

Each step calculated.

Each motion intentional.

"…I can read it," he whispered.

Thanks to his enhanced reflexes and analytical mind, the creature's movements felt predictable.

Clumsy.

Telegraphed.

But there was a problem.

"…I can't damage it."

His previous method wouldn't work easily here.

That stone-like skin wasn't something he could break with bare hands.

Which meant—

"I need a different approach."

Kael stepped back slightly, creating distance.

The creature roared again, charging once more.

This time—

Kael didn't dodge.

He waited.

Closer.

Closer.

At the last possible moment—

He moved.

Not away.

But around.

He slipped past the creature's attack, using its own momentum against it, and in that instant—

He placed his hand against its side.

"Absorption."

Nothing happened.

"…What?"

The creature roared, swinging its arm again.

Kael barely managed to avoid it, jumping back just in time.

"…It didn't work?"

His mind processed it instantly.

Resistance too high. Direct absorption inefficient.

"…So I can't just absorb everything instantly."

Good to know.

But also—

Not a problem.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Then I'll weaken it first."

The creature charged again, relentless.

This time, Kael changed his approach completely.

He didn't aim to win fast.

He aimed to win smart.

---

Minutes passed.

The forest echoed with the sounds of impact and movement as Kael continuously dodged, evaded, and countered in small ways.

He didn't try to overpower it.

He studied it.

Each attack.

Each reaction.

Each weakness.

"…Your joints…" he muttered, noticing the slight gaps in its stone-like armor.

There.

Small openings.

Not enough to destroy it—

But enough to exploit.

The next time it attacked, Kael moved in quickly, striking one of those weak points with all his strength.

The creature flinched.

Just slightly.

"…Good."

Progress.

He repeated it.

Again.

And again.

Slowly but surely, the creature's movements became less stable, its roars more erratic.

Damage was building.

Not enough to kill it.

But enough to weaken it.

Finally—

Kael saw his chance.

The creature stumbled slightly after a missed attack.

A small opening.

But enough.

Kael moved instantly.

Closing the distance in a single motion, he placed both hands firmly against its body.

"Now."

This time—

It worked.

The creature roared violently as the absorption began, its massive body trembling as energy was forcefully pulled from it.

"—GRAAAHH!!"

Kael gritted his teeth.

"…You're not getting away."

The resistance was intense, far greater than before.

But this time—

He was ready.

He held on.

Forced it.

Overpowered it.

Seconds passed.

Then—

Silence.

The creature collapsed inward, its form breaking apart into fragments of energy that flowed directly into Kael.

Gone.

Completely.

Kael stood there, breathing heavily, his arms slightly shaking from the effort.

"…That was… harder."

The voice returned.

"Absorption complete."

Then—

Skill Acquired: Hardened Body (Lv.1)

Skill Acquired: Strength Enhancement (Minor)

Kael closed his eyes for a moment.

Feeling it.

The change.

His body felt heavier—but stronger.

More durable.

More stable.

He opened his eyes slowly.

"…I get it now."

This world didn't favor the weak.

It didn't reward hesitation.

It only followed one rule.

Grow… or die.

Kael looked deeper into the forest, his expression calm but far more focused than before.

"…Then I'll grow."

And without another word—

He continued forward.

Not as prey.

But as something that was slowly, inevitably…

Becoming a predator.
