Chapter 4 - The Vanishing Memory & The Final Reunion

After the miracle at the mountain crater, the story shifts into a bittersweet blur. The comet strikes Itomori, and in the future, Taki stands alone on the mountain, unable to remember why he is there or whose name he was just screaming.

The Miracle of Survival

Eight years pass. It is revealed that the town of Itomori was indeed hit by the comet fragment, but a "miraculous" last-minute evacuation drill saved the lives of almost every citizen. The news calls it the "Miracle of Itomori," but Taki, now a young adult in Tokyo looking for a job, feels a strange, hollow ache in his chest.

He keeps looking for someone in the crowds of the city. He catches glimpses of red hair ribbons or familiar faces on the subway, but he never knows why his heart starts racing.

Walking Shadows

Taki has become a landscape architect, perhaps subconsciously driven by the sketches of a town he can no longer name. Meanwhile, Mitsuha is also living in Tokyo. She has grown into a poised woman, but she, too, feels like she is always searching for a missing piece of her life.

They pass each other several times over the years:

On a snowy bridge.

Through the windows of passing trains.

In the busy streets of Shinjuku.

Each time, they feel a spark—a "Musubi" connection—but they hesitate, afraid they are just imagining things.

The Staircase at Suga Shrine

One spring morning, Taki and Mitsuha are on separate trains. As the cars run parallel for a brief moment, they look through the windows and lock eyes. The lightning bolt of recognition hits them both.

They both scramble off at the next stations and begin a desperate, sprinting search through the winding alleys of the city. Finally, they find each other at the top and bottom of a long, red-railed staircase leading to the Suga Shrine.

They begin to walk past each other. Taki is halfway up, and Mitsuha is halfway down. The silence is deafening. They almost pass completely, acting like strangers.

"Your Name?"

Just as Mitsuha is about to disappear around the corner, Taki stops. He turns around, his eyes filling with tears, and calls out:

Taki: "Excuse me! Haven't we... met before?"

Mitsuha stops. She turns, a wide, tearful smile breaking across her face, and replies:

Mitsuha: "I thought so, too!"

The screen fades to white as they both speak the final words of the story together:

"Kimi no na wa? (What is your name?)"

The Legacy

The story ends on this note of hope. Though their memories were erased by time and the "twilight," their hearts never forgot the connection. The red thread of fate (the braided cord Mitsuha gave Taki) finally brought them back to the same moment in time.
