Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Clearing Ghosts, Souls Return Home

"Child! You are on fire!"

As soon as Lady Helaena of House Hoare entered the room, she saw the White Flame on Roman and immediately cried out, wanting to rush over to help.

Fortunately, Old Jessy was quick-witted and agile, swiftly blocking Lady Helaena of House Hoare. "My Lady! You must not come to harm!"

Roman waved his hand and calmly extinguished the flames.

"I am fine, My Lady."

He then turned around in a circle to show his body.

Other than his clothes being scorched when he was ambushed by the ghost of Heren at the very beginning, Roman had sustained no other injuries.

Even his flesh had been restored after the White Flame appeared.

"Lad, what were those things?" Old Jessy looked at the scorch marks on the floor, still feeling lingering fear.

"The ghosts of Heren the Black and his sons, but they have disappeared now."

As soon as these words were spoken, the complexions of the surrounding Guards and Lady Helaena of House Hoare visibly paled.

"Did you really get rid of them?"

Ghosts were common in Harrenhal, that dark lair, and Roman often heard rumors about them everywhere.

Legend had it that the ghost of Heren was ablaze, and if it saw you, it would hunt you down until that unfortunate soul was burned to death.

Old Jessy had seen Roman's situation earlier, and he was certain that it was the ghost of "Black" Heren.

"I have indeed eliminated them, Instructor Jessy, My Lady."

After speaking, Roman extended his right palm, and the White Flame appeared out of thin air at his will.

"It was this fire that eliminated them, and besides that, I can see other ghosts as well!"

No sooner had Roman finished speaking than the White Flame shot toward a corner, instantly igniting a lurking ghost, which immediately shrieked.

This turn of events caused everyone's psychological defenses to completely collapse.

"The Seven above! Save your people!"

"No, don't come over here!"

Against these unseen and untouchable existences, the Guards were helpless and could only wail like small children.

In the end, it was Lady Helaena of House Hoare who stabilized the situation: "Quiet! Roman is still here. He was able to kill Heren the Black, so what is there to fear from this ghost?"

Hearing the words of Lady Helaena of House Hoare, the Guards gradually calmed down, and a few of the bolder ones even began to carefully observe the ghost.

"This... isn't this the river pirate from the Gods Eye from a few years ago? He has also turned into a ghost?"

This remark drew everyone's attention; after some identification, they discovered it was indeed a bandit from the past.

Now Roman was interested too; he had assumed that only famous figures would turn into ghosts.

But it seemed the curse of Harrenhal was truly strong; even such nobodies could become ghosts and continue to endanger Harrenhal.

The bandit's ghost did not last long and was soon burned away.

Looking at the floor where not even ash remained, Lady Helaena of House Hoare suddenly noticed something.

"Child, if such a person can become a ghost, is it possible that others have also turned into ghosts?"

After struggling with herself for a moment, Lady Helaena of House Hoare stated her ultimate goal: "Child, if you can, could you look for the ghosts of other people? For example, my family."

Roman was also enlightened by this; he had forgotten about that.

Lady Helaena of House Hoare had lost her family after the Usurper's War; if these small characters could become ghosts, wouldn't it be possible to meet Earl Walter Riveran again?

After realizing this, Roman clapped his hands: "I understand, My Lady. Leave the cleaning of the ghosts to me from now on. I will keep an eye out for the Earl during the process!"

After being reborn in the fire, Roman's eyes could see things invisible to ordinary people; he estimated this was a characteristic of dragon-kin.

In the days that followed, Roman began to clear ghosts all over Harrenhal.

The wicked ones were naturally burned directly, while for some ghosts he was unsure about, he would seek out the steward of Harrenhal to ask.

He didn't know until he asked, and he was shocked by what he found.

Many of them were the families of the Servants, mostly ancestors from the past, and a few were people who had met with misfortune.

When these ghosts were scorched by the White Flame, they would materialize, which actually allowed many people to have one last conversation with their departed family members.

During this process, Roman's control over the flames greatly improved.

After burning a few evil spirits, Roman learned to control the firepower, allowing the ghosts to be burned without pain, which actually allowed them to burn longer.

Those Servants and soldiers also had the opportunity to speak a few more words with the ghosts of their family members.

For a time, Roman became a popular figure in Harrenhal, and everyone found him, asking him to help them search for their families.

"Please! Let me speak with my daughter! I have... I haven't seen her for 10 years! You were even able to find George's grandfather; you must be able to find my daughter, right?"

Requests like these were endless, and Roman said many times that he could not control whether a ghost existed or not.

But this could not stop people's fervor; the loneliness after losing their loved ones and the current hope caused these poor people to fall into a near-manic state.

Besides clearing ghosts, Roman sometimes had to counsel people older than himself not to be overly sad.

However, Lady Helaena of House Hoare had not received any news from Roman; she had already described the appearance of her husband and children to him, but there had been no news recently.

Lady Helaena of House Hoare sat by the table and chair near the window, looking through the towering windows of the Burning King Tower at the Gods Eye and the land, her eyes filled with loneliness.

"My Lady! I have a discovery!"

Just when Lady Helaena of House Hoare had given up hope, Roman suddenly ran over.

"Child? What do you mean you have a discovery?"

Lady Helaena of House Hoare felt her aging heart beating intensely after a long time; she looked forward to Roman's reply, but was also afraid that her hope would be dashed.

"Your family. I heard movement near the crypts, and I sensed them!"

A violent heartbeat came instantly, and Lady Helaena of House Hoare excitedly wanted to stand up, but a wave of dizziness and darkness swept over her.

"My Lady, be careful!"

Roman quickly supported Lady Helaena of House Hoare, then poured the first aid medicine given by Scholar Tom into her mouth.

After a good while, Lady Helaena of House Hoare's heartbeat finally returned to normal.

"Thank you, child, I am much better. Let's hurry to the crypts now!"

Roman still wanted to dissuade her, but looking at the almost pleading look in Lady Helaena of House Hoare's eyes, he swallowed the words on the tip of his tongue.

"Then, My Lady, you must be careful!"

After reaching a consensus, the two quickly arrived at the crypts.

Only now did Roman feel the grandeur of this place; various tombstones, statues, and urns were neatly placed along the sides of the corridor.

This could not be compared at all to the crypts of Winterfell he had seen in the show.

Roman did not waste time with sentiment; he led Lady Helaena of House Hoare, turning left and right, and finally arrived beside the statue of Earl Walter.

In the eyes of Lady Helaena of House Hoare, there was nothing here, but Roman clearly saw the ghosts of an old man, four men, and one woman.

Roman bowed to them, then slapped the ground with his right hand, and the pale flames instantly spread out.

These flames passed over Lady Helaena of House Hoare but caused no harm; instead, they burned Earl Walter and the others into visibility.

Helaena saw the family she had dreamed of, and her aged eyes instantly filled with tears.

"Finally... we are finally reunited."
