Chapter 3: A Small Change

The next morning felt no different from any other day in the village.

The same dry air.

The same slow sunlight spreading across the fields.

The same sounds of people starting their work early.

But for Akshy, things were not the same anymore.

He stepped out of the house quietly.

His mother, Kamla Dabra, was already awake, busy with her morning work. She looked at him for a moment, a little surprised.

"You're up early today," she said.

Akshy gave a small nod. "Couldn't sleep much."

She didn't ask anything more. Just nodded and went back to her work.

That was how things were here. People didn't ask too many questions unless needed.

Akshy started walking toward the village well.

It wasn't far, but it was one of the few places where people gathered. If he wanted to understand things properly again, this was a good place to start.

A few people were already there.

One of them was Ramesh Malik.

Ramesh noticed him and laughed lightly. "What happened to you? Since when do you wake up this early?"

Akshy smiled a little. "Just felt like it."

Ramesh shook his head but didn't think too much about it. That was his nature—simple and easygoing.

Near him stood Savitri Malik, his younger sister.

She wasn't talking much, just helping with the water. But her eyes noticed things. She gave Akshy a small nod.

"Morning," she said.

"Morning," Akshy replied.

Everything felt normal.

And somehow, that helped.

After a few minutes, Akshy moved away from the well.

He already knew where he needed to go.

The south field.

When he reached there, his father, Mahavir Dabra, was already working.

Mahavir didn't waste time talking. He looked up once and said, "You're late."

"Just a little," Akshy replied.

That was enough. His father didn't say anything more.

Akshy stepped into the field and looked around.

He had seen this place many times before. But today, he noticed things more clearly.

The water wasn't spreading properly.

One side had too much.

The other side barely got any.

This had always been a problem.

Everyone knew it.

But no one really tried to fix it.

Akshy stood there quietly for a moment.

He could say something.

The solution wasn't difficult.

Just a small change.

But still… he hesitated.

If he spoke suddenly, it would feel strange.

People here didn't like sudden changes.

But if he stayed quiet…

Nothing would change.

He let out a small breath.

Then he spoke.

"Father…"

Mahavir stopped and looked at him.

Akshy pointed at the field. "The water is getting stuck there. If we adjust this part a little, it might spread better."

There was a short silence.

Ramesh, who had come nearby, looked surprised. "Since when do you think about these things?" he joked.

Akshy didn't react to that.

He just waited.

Mahavir looked at the field… then at Akshy.

His face didn't show much.

"Will it work?" he asked.

"I think it will," Akshy said honestly.

Another moment of silence.

Then Mahavir handed him the tool.

"Do it."

That was all.

Akshy took it and stepped forward.

His hands moved slowly at first, adjusting the soil, changing the small path of water.

Nothing big.

Just small changes.

Everyone watched quietly.

The water started moving.

Slowly… but differently.

It didn't gather in one place like before.

It spread a little more.

Not perfect.

But better.

Ramesh stepped closer. "Huh… it's actually working."

Savitri didn't say anything, but she kept watching.

Mahavir stood still for a few seconds.

Then he gave a small nod.

"Good," he said.

That one word felt heavier than praise.

Akshy didn't smile.

But inside, something settled.

This was it.

Not something big.

Not something dramatic.

Just a small change.

But it was the first time he had done something… differently.

And it worked.

He looked at the field again.

Then at his hands.

For the first time since everything changed—

He felt like he could actually do something here.

Not all at once.

Not quickly.

But step by step.
