Chapter 65 - The Keeper's Trial IV

Part Four

Silence reclaimed the arena.

The last of the golden leaves drifted harmlessly to the polished floor before dissolving into tiny motes of light that were quickly absorbed back into the great black tree. The echoes of clashing steel faded into the vastness of the chamber until only the slow, rhythmic breathing of the expedition remained.

No one celebrated.

No one lowered their guard.

Every instinct screamed the same warning.

This...

Was merely the beginning.

The Keeper stood beneath the ancient tree exactly as it had when they first entered the chamber, yet something about its presence had changed. The calm patience that had defined every movement until now remained, but beneath it rested unmistakable purpose. It had watched them think. It had watched them cooperate. It had watched them adapt.

Now...

It intended to adapt as well.

Theron slowly rolled one shoulder, testing the ribs Ruby had only moments ago healed.

"I don't suppose..."

He smiled tiredly.

"...it'll congratulate us and let us leave?"

Ruby laughed despite herself.

"I somehow doubt it."

The Keeper began walking.

Each step echoed through the arena like distant thunder rolling beneath the earth. Silver mana flowed naturally around its enormous paws, not gathering violently but spreading outward across the polished stone in delicate circles that shimmered like ripples upon a calm lake.

Adrian watched every movement.

"It isn't preparing an attack."

Kael looked across the arena.

"Then what's it doing?"

Before Adrian could answer...

The silver ripples reached the twelve ancient pillars.

One by one...

The murals illuminated once more.

This time...

They moved.

Not like illusions.

Like memories.

The Crystal Brood protecting their young.

The Watchers silently observing strangers.

The River Guardians guiding travellers through the flooded city.

Families laughing beneath the Mana Heart Tree.

Everything they had witnessed throughout the dungeon replayed silently upon the towering stone columns surrounding the battlefield.

Mira stared upward in wonder.

"...It's showing us everything."

"No."

Adrian whispered.

"It's reminding us."

The Keeper stopped.

Its great golden eyes settled upon Adrian once more.

Then...

It lowered itself.

Not into a defensive stance.

Into one Adrian recognised immediately.

A swordsman's stance.

Left side forward.

Weight balanced.

Shoulders relaxed.

Exactly...

Like Adrian.

Kael blinked.

"...That's your stance."

Theron frowned.

"No."

His eyes narrowed.

"It was."

Everyone looked toward him.

The giant elf smiled.

"It's already improved it."

Adrian slowly inhaled.

He could see it now.

The subtle shift in weight.

The position of the forelegs.

The angle of the shoulders.

The Keeper had copied his style...

Then removed every unnecessary movement.

It had become...

A better version.

"Well..."

Adrian chuckled quietly.

"...that's humbling."

The Keeper inclined its head once.

Almost agreeing.

Without warning...

It moved.

Not with explosive speed.

With impossible precision.

One step.

That was all.

Yet somehow the enormous Guardian crossed nearly thirty yards before Adrian had fully processed what had happened.

His instincts took over.

"Wind Step!"

Compressed air exploded beneath his boots, throwing him sideways just as one immense forepaw swept harmlessly through the space where he had stood.

The Keeper hadn't missed.

It had expected him to dodge.

Adrian landed in a controlled slide, immediately reforming his stance.

The Guardian was already waiting.

No follow-up.

No relentless assault.

It simply watched.

Waiting to see what Adrian chose next.

He smiled.

"So that's the game."

He disappeared again.

Wind Step carried him forward in a zigzag pattern before he suddenly stopped midway through the movement.

The Keeper's paw swept toward where Adrian would have been.

Empty air.

Adrian had interrupted his own rhythm.

His Energy Blade flashed into existence.

Blue light carved upward toward the Keeper's shoulder.

The Guardian twisted.

Not enough.

The glowing blade finally touched ancient scales.

A shower of brilliant silver sparks erupted across the arena.

The strike didn't cut deeply.

But...

It connected.

For the first time.

The Keeper looked down at the shallow mark.

Then back at Adrian.

Its golden eyes narrowed.

Not in anger.

Approval.

Theron grinned.

"He landed one!"

Kael laughed.

"And now it's going to hit back."

The Keeper's tail swept low across the arena.

Not at Adrian.

At the floor.

The polished stone shattered outward as enormous fragments were launched into the air like boulders hurled by giants.

Adrian reacted instantly.

His Energy Blade vanished.

Both hands came together.

"Earth Wall!"

Stone surged upward before him.

The first fragment struck.

The wall cracked.

A second impact.

More fractures spread.

The third shattered it completely.

Adrian burst through the collapsing debris before the dust had even settled, using the flying rubble itself as stepping stones while Wind Step propelled him higher and higher.

Theron laughed loudly.

"That's it!"

"Use everything!"

High above the arena Adrian reached the peak of his jump.

For the briefest heartbeat...

He hung suspended beneath the darkness of the unseen ceiling.

The Keeper looked up.

So did everyone else.

Blue flames gathered around Adrian's right hand.

An Inferno Sphere.

Larger than any he had created inside the dungeon.

Not enormous.

Not yet.

Just enough.

The swirling blue fire illuminated the entire chamber as he began falling.

Faster.

Faster.

Straight toward the Keeper.

"INFERNO SPHERE!"

He drove the blazing orb downward.

The Keeper didn't move.

Instead...

Its crystalline horns began glowing with soft silver light.

The two attacks collided.

Blue fire.

Silver mana.

The explosion shook the mountain.

A deafening roar echoed throughout the arena as fire and ancient mana erupted into the air, filling the battlefield with blinding light.

Everyone shielded their eyes.

Stone cracked.

Wind howled.

Heat rolled across the chamber.

When the brilliant light finally faded...

Adrian landed lightly upon one knee several yards away.

Breathing heavily.

Smoke drifted lazily between him and the Keeper.

Neither moved.

Then...

The smoke slowly parted.

The Keeper still stood.

One of its crystalline horns now bore a long black scorch mark where the Inferno Sphere had struck.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Adrian slowly stood.

A tired smile spread across his face.

"I finally made you block."

Across the arena...

For the first time since the Trial had begun...

The Keeper smiled.

Not because Adrian had failed.

Because...

He had finally forced the ancient Guardian to defend itself.

The Trial had reached its final lesson.

And somewhere deep within Adrian's mind...

The image of flowing water changing into mist...

And mist becoming ice...

Quietly refused to leave.

The answer was close.

He could feel it.

He just hadn't seen it yet.

The arena settled into silence once more.

Wisps of blue fire drifted lazily through the air before fading into tiny sparks, leaving only the smell of scorched stone lingering beneath the enormous black tree. Adrian stood with one hand resting against his knee, drawing slow, measured breaths as the last traces of the Inferno Sphere disappeared from around his fingertips.

Across the battlefield...

The Keeper remained exactly where it had stood.

The black mark across one crystalline horn was already fading as silver mana quietly flowed over the ancient scales, repairing the damage almost as quickly as it had been inflicted.

Adrian wasn't disappointed.

If anything...

He smiled.

"It heals..."

he whispered.

"But it still has to heal."

Theron looked over from where he stood several yards away.

"You've noticed something."

"I have."

Adrian never looked away from the Keeper.

"It isn't invincible."

The Keeper slowly lowered its head.

Its golden eyes remained fixed upon Adrian.

Then...

Without warning...

The Guardian charged.

Not with wild aggression.

Not with fury.

With flawless purpose.

Every movement flowed naturally into the next as the immense creature crossed the arena in a series of impossibly graceful strides. Its paws barely seemed to touch the polished floor despite its incredible size, silver mana rippling outward beneath each step like rings spreading across still water.

Adrian met the charge head-on.

"Wind Step!"

Compressed air exploded beneath his boots.

Instead of retreating...

He accelerated toward the Keeper.

Blue light erupted into existence as the Energy Blade reformed within his grasp.

Steel against scale.

Again.

Again.

Again.

The two figures blurred together beneath the ancient tree.

To the others, the duel became almost impossible to follow.

Only flashes of blue and silver burst from the centre of the arena as Adrian danced between sweeping claws, whipping tails and crushing forelegs, every strike answered by another movement, every dodge followed by another attack.

The Keeper no longer stood still.

It fought.

Not brutally.

Beautifully.

Like water flowing around stone.

Kael watched in complete fascination.

"...He's changing."

Theron nodded.

"So is the Keeper."

"No."

The Beastkin captain slowly smiled.

"I mean Adrian."

Everyone turned toward the duel once more.

Kael pointed.

"Look at his feet."

Ruby narrowed her eyes.

Only then did she notice.

Adrian wasn't using Wind Step the same way anymore.

Before...

He exploded from one position to another.

Now...

He flowed.

Every burst of wind naturally carried into another movement without stopping.

Every dodge became another attack.

Every attack became another dodge.

He no longer fought against momentum.

He embraced it.

Theron folded his arms.

"...He's adapting."

The Keeper suddenly twisted.

Its enormous tail swept across the arena.

Adrian didn't jump.

Instead...

He planted one foot upon the tail itself.

Wind surged beneath him.

He sprinted along the Guardian's moving tail as though it were solid ground before launching himself toward the creature's shoulders.

The expedition collectively gasped.

Adrian had turned the Keeper's own attack into his path forward.

His Energy Blade descended.

The Keeper tilted its head.

The glowing sword carved another shallow line across its shoulder before Adrian flipped cleanly over its back and landed several yards behind it.

A perfect exchange.

No wasted movement.

No unnecessary force.

The Keeper slowly turned.

Its eyes...

Smiled.

Then...

It disappeared again.

Not beneath the ground.

Not into the darkness.

It simply became...

Mist.

Silver mist exploded outward from its body, rolling silently across the polished arena until the entire battlefield vanished beneath a dense, shimmering fog.

Visibility disappeared instantly.

Theron frowned.

"I can't see anything."

Ruby's voice came somewhere nearby.

"Everyone stay together!"

The Forest Wardens instinctively formed a defensive circle while Elena summoned tiny emerald lights that hovered around the group, though even they struggled to pierce the supernatural mist surrounding them.

Only Adrian remained still.

He closed his eyes.

Mist.

His mind immediately returned to the lesson the Keeper had shown him.

Water.

Mist.

Ice.

Fire.

One spell.

Different forms.

The Guardian hadn't simply hidden.

It had changed states.

A voice broke the silence.

Not spoken aloud.

Felt.

Ancient.

Calm.

Observe.

Adrian's eyes opened.

The Keeper wasn't speaking with words.

It was speaking through the Trial itself.

Ember suddenly climbed onto Adrian's head.

His tiny ears twitched wildly before he pointed toward the left.

Adrian moved instantly.

A massive claw swept harmlessly through the space he'd occupied an instant earlier.

The Keeper emerged from the mist for barely a heartbeat before disappearing once more.

Not invisible.

Concealed.

Adrian smiled.

"So that's it."

Theron called from somewhere beyond the fog.

"What?"

"The mist doesn't hide the Keeper."

Another claw struck from behind.

Adrian twisted beneath it.

"It hides..."

He formed another tiny Inferno Sphere.

"...us."

The little sphere floated quietly above his palm.

Not thrown.

Not yet.

He watched the flames dance.

He watched the surrounding mist swirl gently around the heat.

Then...

His eyes widened.

The mist moved differently near the fire.

It wasn't random.

The hot air...

Was carrying it.

Adrian stared at the tiny currents spiralling around the Inferno Sphere.

His breathing slowed.

Heat.

Water.

Steam.

Steam moved.

Steam concealed.

Steam...

Could become a weapon.

He smiled.

A genuine smile.

The pieces were finally beginning to fit together.

He wasn't ready.

Not yet.

But for the first time since entering the arena...

He could almost see the path to victory.

Across the battlefield...

Hidden somewhere within the mist...

The Keeper quietly watched.

It had seen the look in Adrian's eyes.

The moment of understanding.

The ancient Guardian slowly closed its own eyes.

The student...

Had finally begun asking the question the teacher had waited centuries to hear.
