Chapter 63 - The Keeper's Trial II

Part Two

The maze continued shifting around them with an eerie grace.

Great crystal pillars rose silently from the polished floor before sinking once more beneath the ancient stone, only to emerge elsewhere moments later. Entire pathways vanished while new ones appeared without warning, transforming the arena into a living labyrinth whose shape changed with every measured step the Keeper took somewhere beyond the towering walls of crystal.

No explosions.

No collapsing ceilings.

No chaotic destruction.

Everything moved with deliberate precision.

As though the mountain itself had become another extension of the Guardian's body.

Adrian remained perfectly still.

His blue Energy Blade hummed quietly in his right hand while his left rested against one of the crystal walls beside him. The cool surface vibrated faintly beneath his fingertips.

Not randomly.

Rhythmically.

Almost...

Like breathing.

"The arena..."

he whispered to himself.

"...it's alive."

Ember gave a quiet chirp.

The little red panda's ears twitched toward the wall before he gently placed one tiny paw against the crystal.

He nodded.

Almost as though agreeing.

Somewhere beyond the maze came Theron's voice.

"Status!"

His deep voice echoed between the crystal walls.

"I'm unharmed!"

Ruby answered first.

"So am I!"

Mirelle's calm voice followed.

"Everyone accounted for!"

Kael called next.

"Still breathing!"

Mira laughed nervously.

"Barely!"

Even Garrick managed a chuckle.

"I'll count that."

Adrian smiled.

Good.

Nobody had panicked.

That mattered.

A faint shimmer caught Adrian's eye.

He looked upward.

The silver runes embedded within the towering pillars had begun changing.

Not glowing brighter.

Moving.

Tiny streams of light travelled slowly through the carvings, flowing from pillar to pillar like rivers weaving through an invisible map.

He narrowed his eyes.

"...It's making routes."

Ember chirped sharply.

The little red panda pointed toward another pillar farther away.

The same silver current appeared there.

Then another.

Then another.

The realization struck Adrian almost instantly.

"It isn't random."

Without hesitation he raised his voice.

"The maze has a pattern!"

His words echoed throughout the chamber.

"The runes are connected!"

Theron's laughter boomed somewhere nearby.

"I knew there was a reason I liked bringing you!"

The Keeper watched.

Hidden beyond the shifting crystal.

Its ancient golden eyes followed Adrian with unmistakable interest.

The human hadn't tried breaking the maze.

He hadn't attacked blindly.

He had observed.

Exactly as the Trial intended.

Adrian slowly began following the flowing silver light.

Instead of forcing his way through blocked passages, he simply walked where the runes seemed to lead.

Every turn...

Another pillar moved.

Another passage opened.

Another route revealed itself.

The dungeon wasn't trapping him.

It was...

Teaching him.

Theron reached the same conclusion moments later.

His booming laugh echoed once more.

"I found Adrian!"

The crystal wall between them slowly lowered into the floor.

The giant elf stepped through with Frostrender resting across one shoulder.

"You solved it."

Adrian shook his head.

"I think..."

He looked toward the shifting pillars.

"...it wanted us to."

One by one the others emerged.

Ruby.

Mira.

Kael.

Garrick.

Mirelle.

Elena.

No one had forced their way through.

Everyone had simply learned to read the maze.

The Keeper had separated them.

Only to see whether they trusted one another.

Nobody abandoned anyone.

Nobody charged ahead alone.

The Trial's first lesson...

Had been cooperation.

The crystal maze slowly disappeared.

One pillar after another descended back beneath the polished floor until the enormous arena stood open once again.

The silence returned.

The Keeper remained exactly where it had been.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then...

For the first time...

It moved with purpose.

The enormous Guardian lowered its body slightly.

Its crystalline mane drifted gently around its neck while silver mana gathered naturally beneath each colossal paw.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Now."

Theron smiled.

"...Now it's serious."

The Keeper vanished.

Not slowly.

Not gracefully.

Instantly.

One heartbeat it stood beneath the ancient tree.

The next...

It was gone.

The entire expedition froze.

Mira looked wildly around the arena.

"W-Where—"

"Above!"

Adrian shouted.

Everyone looked skyward.

The Keeper descended from the darkness overhead with impossible speed, its enormous body falling like a mountain while golden eyes remained fixed entirely upon the centre of the expedition.

Theron moved first.

"Behind me!"

Frostrender erupted with brilliant blue frost as the giant elf planted the colossal blade into the polished stone. Ice exploded outward in a towering wall just as the Keeper landed.

The impact shook the entire mountain.

A deafening boom echoed throughout the chamber as stone cracked beneath the Guardian's weight. The frozen barrier shattered into thousands of glittering fragments that filled the air like crystal rain, yet it had accomplished exactly what Theron intended.

The Keeper's momentum stopped.

The expedition remained unharmed.

Theron slid backwards several feet, his boots carving deep grooves across the arena floor.

He grinned despite the strain running through his arms.

"...Now..."

He laughed.

"...that's a proper entrance."

The Keeper looked down at the broken ice.

Then at Theron.

For the first time...

Its ancient eyes showed something new.

Respect.

It slowly inclined its head toward the giant elf.

Not mocking him.

Acknowledging him.

Theron blinked.

"...Did..."

He looked toward Adrian.

"...did it just compliment me?"

Adrian couldn't help smiling.

"I think it did."

The Keeper took one slow step backward.

Then lowered its stance once more.

This time...

The Trial was over.

The battle...

Had finally begun.

The silence that followed the Keeper's landing lasted only a heartbeat.

Then the mountain itself seemed to awaken.

Golden mana surged from the immense creature's body, flowing effortlessly through the silver veins running across its granite-coloured scales before disappearing into the polished floor beneath its feet. The twelve great pillars surrounding the arena answered immediately, their ancient runes igniting one after another until the entire chamber shimmered beneath a canopy of pale gold and silver light.

Adrian felt the pressure instantly.

It wasn't directed at his body.

It was directed at his mana.

His Inferno Sphere, still resting quietly within his core, suddenly felt heavier, as though the Keeper's presence alone demanded that every spell cast inside this chamber carry purpose rather than waste.

Theron rolled his shoulders once before tightening his grip around Frostrender.

"...You feel that?"

Ruby nodded.

"Our mana's being suppressed."

The elderly royal mage looked utterly fascinated despite the danger before them.

"...Not suppressed."

He adjusted his spectacles.

"...Balanced."

Everyone looked toward him.

"The arena isn't weakening us."

He stared at the glowing runes surrounding the battlefield.

"It's preventing overwhelming bursts of mana."

Adrian immediately understood.

"...So nobody can simply overpower the Trial."

The old mage nodded.

"Exactly."

The Keeper moved.

Not with explosive speed this time.

Instead, it walked.

Each measured step echoed throughout the arena while its golden eyes calmly drifted across the expedition, studying every stance, every grip upon a weapon and every subtle shift of weight beneath nervous feet.

It wasn't searching for weakness.

It was memorising them.

Adrian realised that almost immediately.

"It's learning."

Kael's ears twitched.

"...What?"

"The way we move."

Adrian never took his eyes off the Guardian.

"It's remembering."

Theron smiled.

"Then we'd better give it plenty to remember."

Without another word, the giant elf charged.

Stone shattered beneath his boots as his enormous frame accelerated with shocking speed for someone of his size. Frost exploded around Frostrender, coating the polished arena floor in shimmering ice while cold mist spiralled behind him like the tail of a winter storm.

The Keeper remained perfectly still.

Theron closed the final distance.

His greatsword descended with enough force to split solid rock.

"HAAA!"

The blade struck.

The impact thundered throughout the chamber.

A shockwave blasted outward, scattering loose crystal fragments across the arena as Frostrender carved a deep scar into the polished floor—

—but the Keeper had caught the blade.

One massive forepaw rested calmly against the flat of the sword.

Not strained.

Not trembling.

Simply...

Holding it.

Theron's smile widened.

"...Strong."

The Keeper slowly looked down at the frozen steel resting beneath its paw.

Then...

Its tail moved.

Not quickly.

Elegantly.

The immense tail swept across the arena in one smooth motion.

"THERON!"

Adrian shouted.

The giant elf reacted instantly, releasing Frostrender an instant before the tail reached him. The colossal weapon remained trapped beneath the Keeper's paw while Theron crossed both forearms before his chest.

The impact launched him like an arrow.

He crashed through two crystal pillars before rolling across the arena floor, finally digging both boots into the polished stone to stop himself.

Silence.

Theron slowly lowered his arms.

He blinked once.

Then...

Burst into laughter.

"Oh..."

He coughed.

"...I like this one."

Mira stared.

"...He got hit by that..."

Theron raised one hand from across the arena.

"I'm fine!"

Ruby sighed.

"Of course you are."

The Keeper released Frostrender.

The enormous sword clattered harmlessly across the stone before sliding to a stop several yards away.

It hadn't tried to keep it.

It had merely...

Removed it.

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

"It's disarming us."

Garrick nodded slowly.

"Not killing."

"Teaching."

The Guardian's attention shifted.

This time...

Toward Kael.

The Beastkin captain understood immediately.

"So..."

He slowly drew both curved blades.

"...my turn."

His muscles coiled.

Then he disappeared.

Unlike Theron's overwhelming power, Kael became little more than a blur dancing across the arena floor. Every movement flowed seamlessly into the next as he zigzagged unpredictably around the Keeper, refusing to remain in one place for more than an instant.

One strike.

Then another.

Then five more.

Twin blades flashed like silver lightning against ancient scales.

Clang.

Clang.

Clang.

Sparks erupted.

The Keeper turned its head.

Not enough.

Kael was already somewhere else.

The Beastkin captain smiled.

"Too slow."

The Keeper blinked.

Its ears twitched.

Then...

Without even looking...

It took one step sideways.

Kael's next strike sliced through empty air.

The Keeper hadn't followed his movement.

It had listened.

Realisation washed over Kael.

"...It heard me breathe."

The Guardian's tail swept backward.

Kael barely ducked beneath it before springing away.

He landed lightly beside Adrian.

"Well."

He sheathed one blade.

"...that's terrifying."

Adrian couldn't help smiling.

"It's reading everyone differently."

Theron retrieved Frostrender before returning to the group.

"It matched me with strength."

Kael nodded.

"It matched me with speed."

Ruby quietly looked toward the towering Guardian.

"What does that mean for Adrian?"

No one answered.

Because the Keeper already had.

Its golden eyes settled upon Adrian once more.

The immense creature slowly lowered itself into a stance unlike any beast Adrian had ever seen.

Balanced.

Patient.

Calculated.

Not a predator preparing to pounce.

A swordsman preparing to duel.

Adrian's heartbeat quickened.

"...It's copying me."

The Keeper's forelegs shifted slightly.

Its weight redistributed almost perfectly.

Exactly the same way Adrian instinctively stood before drawing his Energy Blade.

The Guardian hadn't copied his magic.

It had copied...

His discipline.

Theron stared in disbelief.

"...You've got to be kidding me."

The Keeper inclined its head once.

Almost inviting him.

Come.

Show me.

Adrian slowly summoned the familiar blue glow of his Energy Blade.

The azure light reflected across the polished stone and danced within the Keeper's golden eyes.

Ember climbed from Adrian's shoulder to the top of his pack, his tiny paws gripping the leather tightly as he gave one determined chirp.

Adrian smiled.

"I know."

He rolled his shoulders once.

His breathing slowed.

The entire arena seemed to disappear.

No hunters.

No Wardens.

No King waiting above.

Only...

Him.

And the Keeper.

One human.

One ancient guardian.

Standing beneath the roots of a forgotten world.

Then Adrian stepped forward.

The duel...

Had begun.

Neither Adrian nor the Keeper moved.

The vast arena seemed to shrink until everything beyond the two of them faded into the background. The murmuring of the underground wind disappeared. The glowing pillars became little more than distant lights. Even the steady breathing of the expedition waiting behind Adrian seemed impossibly far away.

Only two figures remained.

One born beneath the sky.

One born beneath the mountain.

Both waiting for the other to make the first move.

Theron quietly rested Frostrender against one shoulder.

"He isn't rushing."

Ruby smiled faintly.

"Neither is Adrian."

Kael folded his arms.

"They're reading each other."

The Keeper took one slow breath.

Adrian mirrored it.

The Guardian shifted its weight slightly.

So did Adrian.

For several heartbeats they resembled reflections rather than opponents, every subtle movement answered by another until even Mira noticed what was happening.

"...They're copying each other."

The elderly royal mage slowly nodded.

"No..."

His voice carried quiet amazement.

"They're communicating."

Without warning...

Adrian disappeared.

"Wind Step."

Compressed air erupted beneath his boots, launching him across the polished arena in a blur of blue light. His Energy Blade carved a brilliant arc toward the Keeper's shoulder, the glowing edge humming softly as it sliced through the still air.

The Keeper didn't retreat.

It simply turned.

One enormous foreleg intercepted the strike.

Steel never met flesh.

Instead...

Adrian's Energy Blade struck a layer of condensed mana surrounding the Guardian's scales.

The impact rang throughout the chamber.

A clear metallic note echoed across the arena.

Adrian immediately twisted his wrist, allowing the blade to slide harmlessly across the invisible barrier before using the momentum to spin behind the Keeper.

One strike became two.

Two became five.

Every slash landed from a different angle.

Neck.

Shoulder.

Foreleg.

Flank.

Tail.

Blue sparks exploded with every impact as the Energy Blade carved glowing lines through the Keeper's mana barrier.

Not a single strike reached the scales beneath.

The Keeper finally moved.

Its enormous body rotated with astonishing grace, matching Adrian's footwork step for step despite the incredible difference in size. Each swing of its tail forced Adrian to adjust his position, while subtle shifts of its forelegs closed openings before he could exploit them.

It wasn't faster.

It was...

Perfectly efficient.

Theron quietly smiled.

"It doesn't waste movement."

Garrick nodded.

"Neither does Adrian."

Adrian ducked beneath another sweeping tail before springing backwards several yards, landing lightly upon one knee.

He wasn't breathing hard.

But he was thinking.

It's reading my rhythm.

Every attack he'd made followed a pattern.

Even though he hadn't realised it himself.

The Keeper had.

He smiled.

"...Alright."

He dismissed the Energy Blade.

Kael blinked.

"What's he doing?"

Theron never looked away from the duel.

"Changing."

Blue mana gathered around Adrian's right hand.

Not as a blade.

As a sphere.

Tiny flames spiralled together until a familiar blue Inferno Sphere floated quietly above his open palm, no larger than a clenched fist.

The Keeper watched.

Its head tilted ever so slightly.

Curious.

Adrian laughed softly.

"You've seen swords."

His fingers closed gently around the miniature sphere.

"...Let's try something else."

He threw it.

The little fireball streaked toward the Keeper like a comet before striking the polished floor several yards ahead.

The Guardian didn't move.

The sphere wasn't aimed at it.

It simply exploded.

A blinding flash of blue fire erupted across the arena floor, forcing everyone nearby to shield their eyes for the briefest heartbeat.

Not enough to injure.

Enough to distract.

Adrian had already vanished.

Wind exploded beneath his feet once more as he used the brilliant light to mask his movement, circling completely around the Keeper before reforming his Energy Blade mid-stride.

This time...

He aimed for the joints.

The glowing blade struck beneath the Guardian's foreleg.

For the first time...

The mana barrier cracked.

A single silver shard drifted slowly through the air before dissolving into harmless light.

The Keeper immediately stepped backward.

Not wounded.

Surprised.

Ember chirped loudly.

Adrian smiled.

"We got one."

The little red panda bounced excitedly upon Adrian's shoulder before immediately settling once more, his ears already tracking the Keeper's next movement.

The Guardian looked down at the fading crack in its mana barrier.

Then...

Something remarkable happened.

It closed its eyes.

Silver mana flowed gently across the damaged section before the barrier repaired itself within seconds.

Theron exhaled.

"...It learned."

Adrian slowly nodded.

"So did I."

The Keeper's golden eyes opened once more.

This time...

Its expression had changed.

Not anger.

Approval.

The Guardian had expected brute force.

Instead...

Adrian had attacked its concentration.

Its awareness.

Its habits.

He hadn't challenged its strength.

He had challenged its thinking.

The Keeper slowly inclined its head.

A gesture of acknowledgement.

Then...

It disappeared.

Not upward this time.

Not forward.

Down.

The polished arena floor rippled beneath its immense body as though it had become liquid stone, swallowing the ancient Guardian without leaving so much as a crack behind.

Silence.

Adrian frowned.

"...That's new."

The ground beneath his boots trembled.

Ember's ears flattened.

The little red panda suddenly stood upright, his tiny paws gripping Adrian's shoulder tightly before pointing toward the arena behind them.

"Adrian!"

Mira shouted.

He spun.

The Keeper erupted from the stone directly beneath Theron.

The giant elf barely had time to raise Frostrender before the colossal Guardian's shoulder collided with him like a charging mountain.

The impact echoed throughout the arena.

Theron was thrown backwards across the polished floor, skidding nearly fifty feet before crashing into the base of one of the ancient pillars.

Dust exploded into the air.

The entire expedition froze.

For the first time...

The Keeper had stopped testing individuals.

It had begun testing the team.
