Chapter 12 - The Dread Wolf

Part 1 - The Hunt Turns

They didn't stop running. Not immediately, anyway. Behind them, thick branches continued to snap with a heavy, relentless cadence. The Dread Wolf wasn't chasing blindly through the undergrowth; it was methodically tracking them.

"...It's still right on us," Adrian said, keeping his breathing controlled but tight.

"Yes," Elena replied calmly, navigating the dense terrain. "It will not stop."

"...Great. A highly persistent murder dog."

"Focus, Adrian," Lilly ordered sharply from his other side.

"I am focused," Adrian replied, ducking beneath a low branch. "I'm actively focusing on the 'not dying' feature."

"...Acceptable."

They forcefully pushed deeper through the forest until a loud voice suddenly echoed from the shadows ahead. "Here!"

Adrian turned his head just as Benjamin burst back through the trees. Kazer was running hard at the wizard's side, while Jok was tightly clinging to his shoulder like a chaotic, jittery parasite.

"I have returned!" Benjamin shouted, his voice ringing dramatically through the dark woods.

"...You were literally gone for five minutes," Adrian pointed out.

"AND I USED EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT OF THEM WELL!" Benjamin replied.

"...Fair enough."

"Everyone's entirely clear of the area," Benjamin added, his tone shifting to something slightly more serious. "The merchants are completely safe."

Adrian exhaled a long breath, a layer of tension melting from his shoulders. "...Good," he said quietly. That was one less variable to worry about, which meant he could finally direct all his focus toward the giant problem still actively trying to slaughter them.

Right on cue, the trees directly behind them exploded outward in a shower of bark and leaves. The Dread Wolf emerged once more into the twilight. This time, it looked closer, moved faster, and felt significantly stronger.

Adrian dropping into a defensive stance. "It definitely got worse."

"It completely adapted to our combat patterns," Elena noted.

"...Incredibly rude."

The wolf didn't give them another second to talk. It lunged across the gap.

"SPREAD!" Lilly shouted.

They moved instantly, scattering in multiple directions. The wolf slammed violently into the damp ground, its massive claws tearing deep furrows through the earth as a brutal shockwave burst outward. Adrian barely kept his footing as the terrain buckled.

"...Okay," Adrian panted, his hands warming with magic. "We need a significantly better plan."

"We actually have one," Benjamin called out, bracing his staff.

Adrian glanced over at him. "...We do?"

"Yes!" Benjamin said proudly. Benjamin pointed his staff dramatically at the beast. "We overwhelm it with absolute force!" he declared.

Adrian stared at him blankly. "...That is fundamentally not a plan."

"It is a high-level strategy," Benjamin corrected smoothly.

"...It's a phenomenally bad strategy."

"It is an incredibly enthusiastic strategy!"

"...Still entirely bad."

The wolf unleashed a deafening roar, putting an end to the conversation. It charged forward a second time, and this time, it went straight for Benjamin.

"...Oh, that feels highly personal," Benjamin noted, his eyes widening. "KAZER!"

The dog-like beast surged forward on pure instinct, intercepting the charge. Claws met claws in a vicious, tearing impact. Kazer successfully held his ground—for a mere second—before the sheer momentum of the Tier 3 monster threw him violently aside into the brush.

"...He genuinely tried," Adrian said.

Suddenly, Jok leapt cleanly from Benjamin's shoulder, landing right onto the wolf's back. The creature's claws dug deep into the dark fur as it began hissing wildly, clawing at the wolf's ears.

"...I deeply respect the commitment," Adrian noted, watching the blur.

The wolf twisted its massive frame, slamming itself sideways full-force against a thick tree trunk. Jok went flying off the impact, crashing harmlessly into the leaves.

"...And I see the immediate consequences," Adrian added.

"ENOUGH!" Elena called out, her voice cutting through the chaos like a blade.

Wind surged from her position, building up stronger and sharper than before. Sky dove cleanly from the clouds above as the localized air compressed into a violent downward force, driving the wolf hard into the dirt. For a breathless moment, the strategy worked.

"...Now!" Elena shouted, her voice cutting through the gale.

Adrian stepped forward, his focus instantly locking onto the pinned beast. Fire formed in his open palm fully controlled, fully focused, and completely unhurried.

"...Okay," Adrian said quietly to himself. He could feel the flow of energy now, far better than before. It was cleaner, stronger, and completely responsive. "Inferno Ball FEELS...Better."

He didn't shout the words this time; he didn't need to. He threw the concentrated projectile with lethal precision. The attack hit dead-centre, exploding violently across the wolf's flank. Deep flames spread rapidly, burning through the thick fur. The Dread Wolf unleashed a agonizing roar and staggered backward over the moss. It actually staggered.

a genuine flash of surprise crossing his features. "...Okay That is definitely a new result."

"It's actually working," Lilly noted, her shield still raised in a defensive guard.

"...Barely," Adrian replied, keeping his weight balanced.

"Then we push the offensive strategy even further!" Benjamin shouted from the rear, waving his staff.

"...You really, really love that singular strategy, don't you?" Adrian muttered.

The massive beast violently shook its entire frame, the fresh burn marks cutting significantly deeper into its hide now. Its breathing was noticeably heavier, but its burning eyes remained sharp, calculating, and incredibly dangerous.

"...Yeah," Adrian noted grimly. "Still entirely not dead."

"A Tier 3 creature won't fall easily," Elena warned, stepping up beside him.

"...I had heavily gathered that part by now."

The wolf lowered its massive body to the dirt again, dropping into the exact same low stance as before. But this time, the ambient energy felt different. It was heavier, darker, and suffocating.

"...That is definitely not good," Adrian said.

"It's preparing a high-level ability," Lilly warned, bracing her stance.

"...Of course it is. Why wouldn't it have a second phase?"

The ground beneath their boots began to tremble violently, and the air visibly shifted as an immense physical pressure built within the clearing.

"...Okay," his heart hammering against his ribs. "I officially hate phase two of this fight."

"Adrian," Elena said suddenly, her voice dropping all volume but cutting right through the rumbling ground.

He looked over at her. Her gaze was intensely focused and entirely serious. "You can hurt it," Elena said.

A heavy, realization-filled beat passed between them. "...That heavily feels like a setup for something terrible," Adrian replied.

"You can hurt it," she repeated, her tone unwavering. "Significantly more than any of us can."

Adrian blinked in surprise. "...That is absolutely not comforting to hear right now."

"You are actively adapting to the magic faster than it is adapting to us," she explained.

"...That is also phenomenally not comforting."

"Then use that advantage," Elena said flatly.

A breathless pause hung over the clearing. Suddenly, the Dread Wolf roared louder and more terrifying than anything they had heard yet and then it moved. It blurred forward with a lethal velocity faster than anything they'd seen yet, heading straight for Adrian.

"...Okay, fine" Adrian said, his vision locking onto the oncoming blur. "That is definitely personal."

He didn't step back, and he didn't run. He raised his hand, the raw heat of his fire magic forming instantly, but then something else pulled deep inside him. It was a bizarre, internal sensation cold, hungry, and entirely too familiar.

"...Oh, there it is again" Adrian said quietly, his focus shattering for a fraction of a second.

The system runes flickered violently across his vision:

— Skill Interaction Detected —

Predatory Assimilation (Unstable)

Compatibility: Partial

Risk: High

[Consume] [Stabilize] [Ignore]

Adrian stared at the floating text for half a second as the roaring beast closed the gap. "...That sounds like a fundamentally terrible idea," he muttered.

The wolf was already directly on top of him. There was no more time, and absolutely no room left to think.

"...Yeah," Adrian said, a dangerous calm washing over him. "...We're officially doing terrible ideas now."

He reached out his handnot with fire, and not with ice, but with something else entirely. It was a power drawn from something much deeper within his core.

"Com...Come here," Adrian whimpers to the dark entity.

The Dread Wolf lunged with crushing force, its jaws wide open, and Adrian didn't even try to dodge. He stepped right into it.

Part 2 - Bite Back

The wolf came at him like a collapsing wall fast, heavy, and completely unstoppable. Adrian didn't move an inch.

"...This is a phenomenally terrible idea," Adrian stepped forward anyway.

The impact didn't happen the way it should have. Instead of razor-sharp claws tearing ruthlessly into his torso, and instead of rows of jagged teeth ripping through his muscle, his arm shifted. It wasn't just stretching or reacting on pure instinct this time; it completely opened up. His flesh turned viscous, fluid, and desperately hungry.

The wolf's jaws hit full-force and sank straight into a substance that was absolutely not human flesh. For a split second, everything in the clearing paused.

"...Oh, thats far too scary and gruesome" Adrian said quietly, his voice hollow.

And then came the pain. It wasn't a sharp or clean sensation, but an overwhelming, crushing agony. It felt as if a massive, malevolent entity were trying to violently force its way inside him, while something else within his own core was trying to tear it to pieces at the exact same time.

"ADRIAN!" Elena shouted, her usual calm completely shattering.

"DON'T TOUCH HIM!" Benjamin yelled immediately, throwing out a hand to stop her from moving forward.

They could both feel it. The air around the clearing had instantly transformed, growing freezing cold, suffocatingly heavy, and fundamentally wrong. Adrian's vision blurred out of focus as a flood of golden runes began to flicker violently before his eyes.

— Assimilation Attempt Active —

Target: Dread Wolf

Tier Conflict: CRITICAL

Structure Integrity: UNSTABLE

Override Risk: EXTREME

[CONTINUE] [ABORT]

"...Of course it's extreme," Adrian with tightly clenched teeth, his jaw aching from the strain.

The wolf thrashed violently, its massive hind legs kicking up clumps of earth as it tried to pull free from his grasp, but Adrian held on. He wasn't holding on physically; it was something much deeper, a metaphysical anchor locking them together.

"...You don't get to just wander around eating people," Adrian said, his voice raw and strained.

The viscous slime around his arm pulsed with a ravenous life of its own, pulling, dragging, and trying to forcibly take what belonged to the beast. The Dread Wolf unleashed a deafening roar that wasn't born out of mere anger it was pure resistance. It was refuse to be prey. It was fighting back, and it was fighting back hard.

Adrian's entire body trembled under the feedback loop. "...Okay," he breathed, his chest heaving unevenly. "Yeah... This is significantly worse than I thought it would be."

"ADRIAN, LET GO OF IT!" Lilly shouted, her sword raised but unable to find an opening without hitting him.

"...I am actively working on it!" Adrian snapped back.

He wasn't, though. He couldn't. Something deep inside his core simply didn't want to let go; it was hungry, and it wanted more.

"ADRIAN!" Elena's voice cut sharply through the roaring and the chaos. It was clear, grounded, and absolute. "YOU'RE COMPLETELY LOSING CONTROL!"

"...I noticed!" Adrian fired back.

The system runes flickered again, appearing even more violently across his blurred vision:

— Assimilation Threshold Exceeded —

Foreign Will Detected

Dominance Required

[ASSERT AUTHORITY]

Adrian blinked against the blinding light of the text. "...Oh," he whispered. That particular prompt felt exceptionally important.

The wolf surged backward with a terrifying burst of strength, trying to tear its muzzle free from the trap. In response, Adrian's liquid arm stretched further—too far, flowing past the breaking point of normal anatomy.

"...Okay," his focus narrowing to a pinpoint. "We're fully committing to the bit now too late to back out now."

He stepped forward, closing the distance between his human torso and the beast's snapping teeth. "HEY!" Adrian shouted.

The wolf froze, if only for a single fraction of a second. Its burning, predatory eyes locked dead onto his.

"...You're in my way," Adrian said. His voice wasn't loud, and it wasn't dramatic, but something fundamental shifted within the clearing. The surrounding air pressed down with a suffocating weight. It wasn't physical force, and it wasn't raw magic; it was pure, unadulterated presence.

The Dread Wolf hesitated. It wasn't fear that made it pause, but a sudden, primal recognition.

"...I don't even know what I am yet," Adrian said, his voice remarkably steady despite the agony ripping through his veins. "...But I know one thing for certain." The fluid slime suddenly surged, expanding rapidly. "YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE THAT!"

The internal pull intensified. The wolf roared, but this time, the massive creature actually started to lose its footing, its claws sliding forward over the moss.

"IT'S WORKING!" Benjamin shouted from the rear line.

"KEEP GOING!" Lilly added, her shield braced.

Elena didn't speak a word. She just watched the spectacle unfold, her expression a mix of deep focus and intense concern—because she could feel the balance shifting. It wasn't just the wolf that was changing; it was Adrian.

The slime crept further, crawling up the wolf's jaw and wrapping securely across its neck, trying to fully consume and absorb the predator. Glowing fragments of the beast's entity began to break away raw energy, magical structure, and something much deeper and flooded directly into Adrian's core.

"AH!" Adrian gasped, his head snapping back.

It was pure, blinding pain, but beneath the agony came something else: a sudden rush of ancient knowledge, predatory instinct, raw violence, and a bottomless, terrifying hunger.

"...Okay," Adrian said, his voice actively shaking now as the foreign energy settled in his chest. "Yeah... That is a terrifying amount of information."

The Dread Wolf surged a final time, channeling one last, violent push of Tier 3 power through its core, and successfully broke free. The metaphysical connection snapped with a concussive force, throwing Adrian backward through the air. He hit the ground hard, rolling over the damp moss before coming to a stop.

"...Okay," Adrian groaned, forcing his limbs to move. "Definitely not capable of doing that cleanly yet even if I do this power is very risky you abosrb power and magic but also the rage and urges and everything I absorb very risky."

The wolf stumbled backward into the tree line, its breathing noticeably heavier and slower now. It was deeply wounded not just physically, but on a much deeper, structural level.

"...We actually hurt it," Lilly said, her sword catching the filtered light.

"...Yeah," Adrian replied, pushing himself up slowly from the dirt.

"But it's still not enough," Elena added, her eyes narrowing as she watched the beast's shifting aura.

Adrian looked at the wolf, then down at his own hand. It was trembling slightly not out of weakness, but from pure, raw instability. "...I took something from it," Adrian said quietly, his fingers twitching.

"YOU WHAT?" Benjamin asked, his eyes wide.

"...I'm not entirely sure yet," Adrian replied honestly. "But it heavily didn't like the exchange."

The wolf let out a low growl, its tone far more cautious than before.

"...Good," Adrian widening his stance. "The feeling is entirely mutual."

The massive predator began to circle them, no longer lunging blindly or relying on raw brute force. It was actively thinking and adapting to them again.

"...We pushed it into a corner," Lilly noted.

"...Yeah," Adrian replied, his breathing finally leveling out. He exhaled a slow, determined breath. "...But we didn't successfully finish the job."

The Dread Wolf lowered its towering body one final time, dropping into its ultimate combat stance for one last, desperate push.

"...Okay," Adrian said, straightening his posture. Fire flickered into existence above his open palm noticeably stronger and far more stable than anything he had summoned before. "Big puppy...Round three."

Elena stepped right beside him, a fierce current of wind instantly rising around her boots. "...This time," she said quietly, her voice full of absolute certainty, "...we end it for good."

Adrian glanced over at her, then snapped his focus dead onto the oncoming beast. "...Yeah," Adrian said, a familiar smirk touching his lips. "...Let's not drag this out."

The Dread Wolf roared, shaking the entire forest to its roots, and charged.

Part 3 - Burn It Down

The wolf came faster than before. It wasn't reckless or wild this time; it was desperate.

"...Yeah," the flames flickering tightly in his palm. "That's never a good sign."

"Stay focused!" Elena said, wind already gathering in a sharp vortex around her boots.

"I am focused," Adrian replied, keeping his weight balanced. "I'm focusing entirely on the giant death wolf currently sprinting at my FACE!"

"...Good."

Lilly stepped forward, her heavy shield raised into an absolute guard. "Last push," she said.

"...Finally, ABOUT DAMN TIME!"

The Dread Wolf lunged, and Lilly met the charge head-on. The brutal impact thundered through the small clearing, shaking the leaves from the canopy. She successfully held her ground for a mere second before her boots dug deep into the mossy ground, sliding backward under the sheer momentum.

"...Okay," Lilly groaned through clenched teeth, her arm muscles straining to their limit. "That is officially everything I've got left."

"Then do not break!" Benjamin shouted from the rear line, his staff raised.

"...Wasn't exactly planning to!" she shot back.

Kazer darted into the fray on pure instinct, snapping fiercely at the wolf's flank to pull its attention away from the shield line. Jok followed right behind him, leaping wildly onto the beast's muzzle claws scraping and hissing furiously. He was chaos incarnate.

"...I honestly don't know what your overall plan is," Adrian tracking the jittery blur, "but I deeply respect the chaotic energy."

The wolf twisted its massive frame, striking outward with a heavy paw. Kazer barely managed to dodge the swipe, but Jok got launched across the clearing yet again.

"...And I see the immediate consequences," Adrian added, tightening his stance.

"Adrian!" Elena called out.

He turned his head, his vision locking onto her face. Her eyes were completely calm, focused, and certain.

"This is it," Elena said simply.

A heavy, realization-filled beat passed between them. Adrian gave a firm, slow nod.

"...Yeah," Adrian said.

There were no more jokes, and no more dry deflections. There was just absolute understanding.

"Lilly!" Elena called out, her voice cutting through the smoke.

"I've got it!" Lilly replied, bracing her weight against the turf again.

"Benjamin!" Adrian shouted over his shoulder.

"I am completely ready!" Benjamin declared, his posture rigid as he gathered his remaining mana.

"...Good," Adrian said, his fingers twitching. "Because I am entirely out of backup plans."

The Dread Wolf violently broke through Lilly's guard. It wasn't a full breach, but it was enough to let the massive beast surge forward over the gravel.

"NOW!" Elena shouted.

Wind exploded outward from her position as Sky dove straight from the clouds above. The localized air twisted, compressed, and focused no longer wild, but surgical, controlled, and directed entirely toward Adrian.

"...Okay," Adrian said quietly.

Fire formed above his palm. It wasn't rushed and it wasn't unstable. It was perfect. For the first time in his life, the magic completely listened to his intent.

"...YES THATS BETTER!"

The flame grew larger than before, turning denser and significantly brighter until the sheer heat visibly warped the air around his torso. At the exact same millisecond, Benjamin slammed the base of his staff into the ground.

"EARTH BIND!" the wizard shouted.

The ground surged upward in a wave of stone and mud, grabbing at the wolf's hind legs and slowing its desperate charge just enough. Lilly stepped directly into the path of the snapping jaws, her heavy shield slamming forward to lock the beast's momentum in place.

"DO IT!" Lilly roared.

The Tier 3 creature thrashed frantically, fighting and breaking the bindings, but it was already too late. Adrian stepped forward. Not back. Never back again.

"...Elena," Adrian said.

"I'm right with you," Elena replied.

The wind surged a final time, feeding oxygen directly into his gathering flames, turning them violent and unstable but perfectly guided through her control.

"...Right," Adrian said, a dangerous calm settling into his chest. He pulled his arm back, the fire compressing into a blinding core. "...Let's end this nightmare puppy."

"NOW!" Elena called.

"INFERNO BALL!" Adrian roared.

He threw the projectile with everything he had left. The gale caught it instantly, amplifying, twisting, and expanding the magic until the flames exploded forward in a roaring, blinding inferno. It was hotter and faster than anything they had ever witnessed as it slammed directly into the Dread Wolf at point-blank range.

The resulting explosion violently shook the clearing, engulfing the entire space in a massive wall of fire. The raw roar of the flames completely drowned out the world, leaving nothing but light, intense heat, and a breathless silence.

Slowly, the flames died down, revealing an absolute stillness. The Dread Wolf stood frozen in the center of the moss burned, broken, and utterly defeated. Then, it collapsed. The ground trembled slightly as the massive carcass hit the earth, and it didn't move again.

Real silence returned to Shadowfen. Adrian stood on the grass with his arm still extended, his breathing heavy and ragged from exhaustion.

"...Okay," Adrian said after a long moment, lowering his hand. "...That actually worked."

No one spoke a word. Then, Benjamin raised a dramatic hand into the quiet air. "I WOULD LIKE TO OFFICIALLY SAY—"

"Don't," Lilly cut him off immediately.

"...Understood," Benjamin replied, shrinking slightly.

Kazer barked once in celebration, and Jok somehow managed to land cleanly right back onto Adrian's shoulder.

Adrian glanced sideways at the creature. "...How do you continuously keep doing that?"

Jok let out a proud, unnerving hiss.

"...Yeah, that tracks."

Elena walked forward slowly over the scorched earth. She looked down at the fallen predator, then turned her gaze to Adrian. "...You actually did it," she said quietly.

Adrian shook his head slightly. "...We did it."

A heavy pause settled over them. Elena smiled faintly a real, genuine expression. "...Yes. We did."

Above them, Sky circled the clearing, letting out a soft, echoing call. The forest felt entirely different now lighter, as if a suffocating weight had finally been lifted from the canopy. Adrian exhaled a long, slow breath.

"...So," Adrian said, glancing around at his mismatched companions, "anyone else feel like that could've gone significantly worse?"

"...Significantly worse," Lilly agreed, shearing her sword.

"...Good...good...Just checking."

He looked down at his own hand again. There was no fire and no frost; it was just his normal, solid hand.

Right on cue, the golden system runes flickered softly across his vision:

— Target Eliminated —

Assimilation: Partial

New Traits Available (Dormant)

Processing Required

Adrian stared at the floating text for a second before letting out a tired sigh. "...Yeah. We're definitely dealing with that problem later."

He looked back at the team, at the ruined clearing, and at the impossible victory they had just achieved together.

"...We actually did it," Adrian said quietly. This time, there was absolutely no sarcasm left in his voice. There was just the cold, hard truth.
