The question caught him off guard.
It was not the question itself that surprised him, but the suddenness with which it had been asked. His hand, which had been resting upon the door handle, stilled. For a brief moment, his expression betrayed something she could not quite name.
Then it was gone.
Doctor Henry turned fully toward her. "Your father?" he repeated, though there was no real need to ask.
Penelope nodded. "Yes."
He regarded her for a moment before taking a slow breath. "Your father had been unwell for some time, Miss Anderson. As I recall, his condition deteriorated rather quickly toward the end. There were complications, and despite the care he received, he did not recover."
She remained perfectly still. "That is all?"
His brows drew together slightly. "I beg your pardon?"
"That is all you remember?" She repeated.
