Chapter 2 - THE ACADEMY TRAILS

The rain had slowed to a drizzle by morning, leaving the academy's stone courtyards slick and glinting in the weak sun.

Kael Ren walked alone toward the Aether Academy, his black coat flaring slightly as he moved. No one dared speak to him—partly out of fear, partly out of curiosity.

He had been unmarked for seventeen years. Until yesterday.

Now, something new pulsed beneath his skin. Something alive. But he didn't know what it was. And he didn't care to ask… yet.

Students crowded the training halls, practicing their powers. Fireballs zipped through the air. Ice spears shattered walls. Lightning arcs struck from every corner.

Kael stepped into the center of the hall. Silence fell.

A boy with spiky blond hair smirked. "The unmarked boy thinks he belongs here now?"

Another, a tall girl with violet eyes and a twin-blade aura, snorted. "We'll see how long he lasts once the trials start."

Kael didn't respond. Calm. Cold. His gray eyes scanned every movement. Every heartbeat. Every spark of Aether around him.

"Gather around," the instructor barked. "The academy trials begin today. Only those who demonstrate true control of their power may advance. For the unmarked…" His gaze lingered on Kael. "…let's see what you're hiding."

The crowd gasped. Whispers spread.

"Control… his power?" a student muttered. "He doesn't even have a mark!"

Kael merely smiled faintly. Not cruel. Not friendly. Just… faint.

He already knew something they didn't.

Power wasn't always visible.

The trials began.

First challenge: Aether Gauntlet — a test of speed, agility, and energy control. Students had to pass through a corridor rigged with elemental attacks. Fire blasts, ice spikes, and wind shears came at them relentlessly.

Kael stepped forward. Calm. Cold.

A fireball launched at his chest. He didn't dodge. It stopped midair. The air around him warped subtly, almost like a ripple in reality. The students froze.

Ice spears struck next. Lightning arcs came from the ceiling.

Kael didn't move.

Yet nothing touched him.

The crowd gasped louder.

From the back, Riven Drake stepped forward. His lightning crackled angrily. "So this is the boy everyone talks about… the unmarked one."

Kael's eyes flicked toward him. Calm. Cold.

Riven lunged. Lightning blades tore through the air toward Kael.

Kael extended a hand.

The lightning froze in place. Sparks fizzled. A faint pulse of black energy rippled across his arm, but his face remained expressionless.

Riven stepped back, wide-eyed. "What… what is that?!"

Kael didn't answer. He never did.

The trials ended shortly after, with Kael passing without effort, leaving whispers and awe in his wake.

And at the far edge of the hall, hidden in shadow, someone—or something—watched.

A dragon-shaped shadow, barely visible, its eyes glowing faintly silver. It moved like mist across the ceiling, unseen by everyone except Kael.

Kael felt it, as a pulse against his chest. The mark beneath his skin stirred, alive, responding.

He didn't know what it was. Not yet.

But he knew one thing:

The academy would never be the same again.
