Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2

The Promise and the Plot

The cool shade of the Pine Path was a relief after the scorching training ground. Lin Jing kept his head down as he walked, but he could still feel eyes on him—disciples who'd witnessed his sudden burst of power whispering behind their hands. He'd spent the past hour trying to make sense of the Infinite Crit System, testing small actions to see how it reacted.

Tapping a tree trunk… CRIT! The bark splintered into fine dust.

Taking a sip of water… CRIT! His thirst vanished instantly, and he felt his stamina surge.

Even breathing deeply… CRIT! The spiritual energy in his body thickened, settling into a nascent core in his dantian.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION

Host has formed a First Stage Spiritual Core via Critical Strike

Bonus: Meridian Capacity Increased ×5

He'd gone from unable to circulate qi at all to having a solid core in a single afternoon. It was almost too good to be true—but the system had already proven its power against Chen Hao.

Lin Jing turned onto the path leading to Medicine Peak, where wooden huts dotted the hillside and the air smelled of herbs and damp earth. He found Yun Qingyan in her usual spot, kneeling beside a row of white-flowering plants, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows.

At fifteen, she was smaller than most disciples her age, but her hands were steady as she carefully harvested leaves. When she saw him approaching, her face broke into a warm smile that made his chest feel tight.

"Jing-ge! I heard what happened at the training ground—everyone's talking about it!" She wiped her hands on her apron and stood up, her dark eyes shining with pride. "I always knew you'd find your way. You've worked so hard."

Lin Jing's jaw tightened. He'd never told her how hopeless he'd felt before the system awakened. "Qingyan, I need to talk to you. Are you safe here? Have you noticed anything… strange lately?"

Her smile faltered slightly. She glanced around as if checking for listeners, then pulled him closer to the edge of her garden. "Elder Ye has been acting odd. He's been asking me to help with special potions—ones that use rare spiritual herbs, and he won't tell me what they're for. Yesterday, I saw him meeting with Chen Hao's uncle, Elder Chen of Thunder Peak. They were speaking in low voices, and they mentioned… 'the sacrifice'."

CRIT ALERT: Hostile Plot Detected

SYSTEM UPDATE

Danger to Yun Qingyan Confirmed

Sub-Quest: Uncover the Plot

Objective: Learn the purpose of Elder Ye's potions and stop the threat to Yun Qingyan

Reward: New Skill Unlocked – Crit Perception

A cold anger rose in Lin Jing's chest, amplified by the system's notification. He reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, his grip firm but gentle. "Qingyan, you can't help him with those potions anymore. Promise me you'll find an excuse to refuse—tell him you're ill, or that you need to focus on the Assessment."

She bit her lower lip, looking troubled. "But Elder Ye took me in when no one else would. I don't want to betray him…"

"He's the one betraying you," Lin Jing said sharply, then softened his tone. "I know he's been good to you, but something's wrong here. Trust me—I won't let anything happen to you. I'm going to pass the Assessment and become an Inner Disciple, and then I'll have the power to protect you properly."

Yun Qingyan studied his face for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "I trust you, Jing-ge. I'll be careful." She paused, then added, "The Outer Sect Assessment has three parts: Body Tempering, Spiritual Energy Control, and the Beast Hunt in the Misty Woods. You've never been able to pass the first two—but if what everyone says is true…"

"I'll pass," Lin Jing said firmly. "And not just pass—I'll be at the top of the rankings."

As if on cue, footsteps crunched on the gravel path behind them. Lin Jing turned to see Chen Hao striding toward them, his wrist wrapped in bandages, his face dark with fury.

"Lin Jing," he spat. "You think you can humiliate me and get away with it? I've already spoken to Elder Chen—he'll be overseeing the Assessment this year. When you fail, not only will you be expelled, but Yun Qingyan will be transferred to Thunder Peak to serve as my personal servant."

Yun Qingyan stepped forward, her chin raised despite her fear. "I won't go with you, Chen Hao! I'm a disciple of Medicine Peak, not your servant!"

Chen Hao laughed, a harsh sound. "We'll see about that. Your precious Elder Ye has already agreed to the transfer—all part of our arrangement." He fixed his gaze on Lin Jing. "Three days, trash. Then you'll be gone for good."

He turned and walked away, leaving a heavy silence in his wake. Lin Jing clenched his fists, feeling golden qi surge through his body in response to his anger.

CRIT TRIGGERED: Anger Amplification

Temporary Boost: Physical Strength ×30 for 24 Hours

"Three days," Lin Jing repeated, looking down at Yun Qingyan. "By then, everything will change. I promise you that."

She reached up and touched his cheek, her hand warm against his skin. "I believe you, Jing-ge. Now go—you need to prepare. I'll keep an eye on Elder Ye and find out what those potions are really for."

Lin Jing nodded, then turned and headed back toward his quarters. He had three days to master everything he could—Body Tempering, Spiritual Energy Control, and whatever else he needed to dominate the Assessment.

With infinite critical strikes, failure wasn't an option.
