Chapter 28 - A 'Priceless' Buzzer Beater

In the locker room during halftime, Nagelsmann didn't give a long speech.

He stood in front of the tactics board, circling a few key areas with a marker, his voice very clear: "Liverpool will definitely strengthen their attack in the second half, especially Mohamed Salah and Mane will frequently switch positions. Hübner, pay attention to protecting the left flank; Vogt, you continue to command the defense to stay compact."

After speaking, he walked up to Oliver, patted his shoulder, and said, "Oliver, you played well. You didn't disappoint me. Opportunity doesn't wait for the unprepared, and it seems my decision was correct."

"Thank you, Coach!" Oliver nodded, sweat dripping down his temples.

After the break, the whistle for the second half blew, and the atmosphere at Anfield was reignited. The Liverpool players' eyes were fierce; Klopp had clearly given a death order during halftime:

"End the match as quickly as possible, don't hold back!"

As expected, Liverpool showed a completely different momentum from the start, with Milner replacing Wijnaldum. The veteran's running and interception immediately raised Liverpool's midfield intensity by a notch. Firmino began to frequently drop back to receive passes, while Mohamed Salah and Mane were constantly interchanging, like two sharp knives repeatedly stabbing at Hoffenheim's flanks. Not long after the second half began, Oliver already felt the pressure intensify, even more fiercely than at the start of the first half.

In the 49th minute, Mohamed Salah suddenly cut in from his side. Oliver desperately chased back, but the Egyptian shook him off with a sudden stop and change of direction. Fortunately, Hübner covered in time and cleared the ball. Klopp, on the sidelines, waved his hand angrily, clearly dissatisfied with the missed opportunity. Nagelsmann, meanwhile, nervously paced in the technical area, constantly shouting at his players to maintain their formation.

"Hold your positions! Don't get dragged out!"

In the 53rd minute, Liverpool took the lead again. Milner received a pass from Henderson in midfield and suddenly sent a diagonal pass to Arnold, who had surged up the right flank. The young England full-back displayed astonishing assisting ability, dribbling to the byline and delivering a precise cross. Vogt misjudged and missed the header, and Mane appeared like a ghost at the far post, smashing the ball into the net with a volley!

2-1!

Liverpool led again! Anfield instantly erupted, and the Reds' fans' songs echoed through the sky.

"Liverpool are ahead once more! This goal showcases the power of their wing attack!" the Commentator shouted excitedly,

"The young full-back Arnold's cross was so precise, and Mane's positioning and shot were impeccable! Hoffenheim's defense made a fatal mistake; Vogt and Kaderabek had a communication breakdown and completely missed Mane at the far post!"

After Liverpool scored their second goal, the red ocean of Anfield Stadium surged even more violently. In this situation, any team would be affected. Let alone the Hoffenheim club, who were new to this stage?

Oliver stood at the center circle, looking at the wildly celebrating Liverpool players, then at his coach on the sidelines, who was frowning under immense pressure. He could clearly feel that his teammates' fighting spirit seemed to have dropped, including their captain.

He walked towards the somewhat dejected Vogt, patted the captain's back, and said, "Captain, there's still plenty of time. We can come back. Let's keep organizing the attack."

"Oliver... you... Oh my, I lost my composure. Thank you for reminding me."

Vogt looked at the 17-year-old boy in surprise, then nodded heavily and shouted at his teammates.

"Everyone, get your spirits up! Don't forget what you're here to do! The second half has just begun!" Vogt's voice from the defensive line reached the Hoffenheim players' ears.

Oliver also encouraged his teammates in the attacking third, urging them to keep pushing. Nagelsmann already had a countermeasure and quickly instructed his assistant coach to make new adjustments. Grillitsch dropped back to form a double pivot with Kramarić, Amiri moved forward to the attacking midfield position, and the formation changed to a more offensive 4-2-3-1. This tactical change immediately bore fruit. Hoffenheim began to fiercely contest the midfield with Liverpool, and the pace of the game became increasingly fast.

In the 68th minute, a miracle happened again. Amiri, after receiving the ball in midfield, keenly spotted a gap in Liverpool's defense and delivered a high-quality through ball that sliced through the Reds' central defense. Oliver and Amiri's chemistry had long since improved. He anticipated his teammate's intention, and in an instant, he burst forward like an arrow released from a bow,

Successfully beating the offside trap perfectly! He dribbled into the right side of the box. Facing the onrushing Karius, he didn't go for glory but calmly played a cut-back pass. Uth, who had arrived just in time, easily tapped the ball into an empty net!

2-2!

Hoffenheim equalized again!

"Goal!!! Uth!!! Hoffenheim have equalized again!" The Commentator's voice trembled with excitement, "This goal was so beautiful! From Amiri's through ball to Oliver's offside trap-beating run, and then the unselfish assist, the whole process was seamless! Liverpool's high defensive line was completely torn apart!"

In the away stands, Olivers Father jumped up excitedly, hugging and celebrating with the surrounding Hoffenheim fans. Oliver Mom covered her face with her hands, tears streaming down uncontrollably.

"Don't cry, dear. Our son can play in the Champions League now. He really made it..." Olivers Father put his arm around his wife's shoulder, comforting her softly.

And on the field, Uth, who scored the goal, and Oliver, were surrounded by their teammates. This 17-year-old boy had, unknowingly, become an important, even indispensable, part of Hoffenheim's attack.

Klopp's face turned exceptionally grim. He immediately substituted Solanke for Emre Can, attempting to strengthen the attack. But at this point, the Liverpool players clearly started to get anxious. Their passes were no longer as precise as in the first half, and their defense began to show loopholes.

In the 79th minute, Baumann launched a long ball, and Vogt outjumped Henderson in midfield to head it on. Gnabry received the ball on the left wing. Facing Arnold, who had played almost the entire match, the experienced Gnabry correctly judged the direction to break through. Arnold's weakness was exposed for the first time; his positioning awareness in one-on-one defending still needed improvement. Gnabry shook off his defender with just two beautiful changes of direction.

"Trent!!" Klopp exclaimed from the sidelines.

Gnabry continued to dribble inside. Arnold turned quickly, but Gnabry was even faster. He suddenly shot from the edge of the box, and the ball arced beautifully into the top corner of the goal!

3-2!

Hoffenheim took the lead!

"Oh my God!!! Gnabry!!! Hoffenheim are leading!!!" The Commentator almost lost his voice, "Arnold simply can't keep up with Gnabry's rhythm! This goal is so crucial! Liverpool's Champions League journey is in danger!"

Anfield fell into a deathly silence, the Reds' fans watching the scoreboard in disbelief. Is this a score a mid-table Bundesliga team can achieve? We're being overturned at home?

"Ladies and gentlemen, I must say, tonight's match is incredibly suspenseful. There are still more than ten minutes left in the game. If Liverpool cannot equalize or take the lead before the end, then the drama of this match will further intensify!" the Commentator said.

Klopp was fuming on the sidelines, while Nagelsmann excitedly embraced his assistant. Oliver ran to Gnabry and celebrated with him. The two good friends exchanged a smile and fist-bumped. The final ten minutes turned into Liverpool's all-out attack. Klopp used his last substitution. The Reds pushed everyone forward, even center-back Lovren charged into the attacking third. But Hoffenheim's defense was meticulously organized, and Oliver also actively participated in defending. His running distance in this match had already exceeded 11 kilometers.

In the 89th minute, the suspense of the match was completely killed. Kramarić dispossessed Henderson in midfield, then desperately sent a reasonably accurate diagonal pass. Oliver received the ball on the right wing. Facing Matip's defense, he first feigned an inside cut, then suddenly changed direction and broke through on the outside. In almost three seconds, his dominant leg's knee made three consecutive changes of direction! Just as he was about to reach the byline, he executed another sudden stop and pull-back, and Matip finally lost his balance! Oliver seized this fleeting opportunity and poked the ball into the net from a tight angle!

4-2!

Hoffenheim sealed the victory!

"Game over!!! This is a priceless decisive goal!!! The 17-year-old Oliver, scoring a brace on his Anfield debut!!! His second goal directly sent Hoffenheim into the Champions League!" the Commentator shouted excitedly,

"This young man destroyed Liverpool's defense! His ball control is simply incredible! Matip was completely outplayed by him! Hoffenheim ultimately created a miracle!"

Liverpool's 2-1 first-leg advantage was nullified by Oliver's decisive goal.

Anfield was silent, with only a small patch of blue in the away stands celebrating wildly. Olivers Father excitedly waved his fists, shouting slogans with the Hoffenheim fans, while Oliver Mom was already sobbing uncontrollably. On the field, Oliver was piled on by his teammates. This 17-year-old boy, with a perfect performance of two goals and one assist, sent Hoffenheim into the Champions League group stage!

When the final whistle blew, Klopp said nothing more. He quickly left the field, while Nagelsmann was embracing every player. Oliver, surrounded by his teammates, walked to the sidelines and applauded the Hoffenheim fans in the away stands. He saw his parents' proud smiles, and the heartfelt support of his home team's fans.

"Oliver, look here! I'm wearing your jersey!!"

"Number 17, you deserve the respect of all Hoffenheim fans!!"

At this moment, all the effort was worth it.

"Let's congratulate Hoffenheim," the Commentator said with emotion,

"After being 1-2 down in the first leg, they overturned Liverpool 4-2 in the second leg, advancing to the Champions League proper with a 5-4 aggregate score! Liverpool's Champions League journey ended prematurely, which is indeed regrettable. Tonight belongs to the Champions League newcomer Hoffenheim, to young coach Nagelsmann, and even more so to the 17-year-old Oliver! He has conquered Anfield with his stunning performance!"

Hoffenheim pulled off the comeback and successfully advanced to the Champions League group stage!
