Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Secrets in the Soil

Alex heard about the attack the very next day from Mrs. Alvarez, who couldn't keep the worry out of her voice. He showed up at closing time with two steaming coffees from the corner café and a single perfect white orchid wrapped in simple paper.

"I don't do pity," he said quietly, setting the cup in front of her on the back stoop. Rain drummed steadily on the awning above them. "But I do respect survival."

They sat in the cool evening air, the scent of wet earth and fresh flowers mingling around them. Elena found herself telling him fragments she had never spoken aloud to anyone: the bridge crash, the bruises from her father's belt, the locked basements in foster homes, the lingering stares, and now Marcus. She left out the letter. Left out the dead roses. Some secrets still felt too raw to touch.

He listened without interrupting, without offering empty comfort. When she finally fell silent, he said, "I design healing spaces for a living. Hospitals. Therapeutic gardens for kids who've survived hell. Foster homes that actually feel like homes instead of prisons." He looked at her, eyes steady. "I've seen a lot of broken things rebuilt stronger than before."

She almost laughed, the sound bitter in her throat. "The universe has a sick sense of humor sending you here."

"Maybe," he replied softly. "Or maybe it's finally giving you a chance to see what's possible when someone stays."

That night, for the first time in months, Elena didn't sleep with the knife under her pillow. Instead, she tucked Alex's handwritten note—You're stronger than the rain—beside her bed like a talisman.

The dead roses stopped for exactly seven days.

Then they returned. Only now, each one was missing a single petal. One. Two. Three.

Someone was still counting.

But for the first time in years, Elena felt something dangerous flicker to life inside her chest.

Not fear.
