Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: When Everything Falls Apart

The sky was too bright for the way Maya Elridge felt.

It was unfair, really—how the world could look so normal when everything inside her had completely unraveled.

She didn't know how long she had been walking.

Just that she hadn't stopped.

Not when her phone buzzed.

Not when her legs started to ache.

Not when the memories began to hit, one after another, like waves she couldn't outrun.

I never stopped choosing you.

The words echoed in her head.

And now they felt different.

Not like comfort.

Like confusion.

Like something she didn't understand anymore.

Back at the bookstore, no one had moved much.

Silence hung thick, broken only by the faint sound of pacing.

"You need to go after her," Lena Brooks said firmly, her arms crossed.

"I will," Julian Hart replied, his voice low.

"Not 'will,'" Lena snapped. "Now."

Julian didn't argue.

He couldn't.

Because she was right.

But just as he reached the door—

"Wait."

Ethan Cole's voice stopped him.

Julian turned, frustration already rising. "What?"

Ethan stepped forward slowly. "If you go now… you better be ready to tell her everything."

Julian's jaw tightened. "I already told her enough."

Ethan shook his head. "No. You told her the version that hurts less."

"That is the truth."

"It's part of the truth," Ethan corrected. "And right now? Half-truths are the reason she walked out that door."

The words hit harder than anything else had.

Because deep down…

Julian knew he was right.

Outside, Maya finally stopped.

Her chest rose and fell unevenly as she leaned against a quiet wall, trying to steady herself.

"Running doesn't suit you."

She froze.

Slowly turned.

Daniel Reeves stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets, watching her carefully.

"I'm not running," Maya said.

Daniel raised an eyebrow. "You walked halfway across town."

She let out a shaky breath. "I needed space."

"And did you find it?" he asked.

Maya didn't answer.

Because the truth?

The noise in her head had only gotten louder.

"You look like you're breaking," Daniel said softly.

Maya laughed bitterly. "That obvious?"

"To someone who's been there?" he replied. "Yeah."

She looked at him, really looked this time.

"Why are you here?" she asked. "I thought you said you understood."

"I did," he said. "But that was before I knew he was still hiding things from you."

Maya flinched slightly.

Daniel stepped closer, his voice calm but pointed.

"You deserve honesty. Not pieces of it."

Her eyes filled again, but she held her ground.

"And what about you?" she asked. "Were you always honest with me?"

Daniel didn't hesitate.

"No," he admitted.

That surprised her.

"But at least I know that now," he continued. "Julian still thinks hiding things is protecting you."

Maya shook her head. "You don't understand him."

Daniel's gaze softened. "Then help me understand. Because from where I'm standing… he chose someone else over you."

"That's not what happened," Maya said quickly.

"Isn't it?" Daniel pressed.

The question lingered.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Back at the bookstore, tension had shifted into something sharper.

"You should've told her everything from the start," Lena said, pacing now.

"I was going to," Julian replied, frustration breaking through. "I just—needed time."

"Time?" Lena repeated. "You had seven years!"

Tunde, quietly observing from the corner, added, "At this point, time is not your defense, bro."

Julian shot him a look.

Tunde raised his hands. "Just saying."

Clara, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke.

"You're all angry at him," Clara Whitmore said calmly. "But none of you are asking the right question."

Lena frowned. "Which is?"

Clara met Julian's eyes.

"Why he said yes in the first place."

The room went still again.

Julian's expression hardened. "We're not doing this."

"No," Clara said gently. "You're avoiding it. Again."

Ethan sighed. "She's right."

Julian turned to him sharply. "Don't."

"You think this is just about the engagement," Ethan said. "It's not."

Lena looked between them. "Okay, someone needs to start explaining things properly, because this is getting ridiculous."

Julian ran a hand through his hair, his composure finally cracking.

"You want the truth?" he said.

"Yes," Lena snapped.

"No," Ethan muttered quietly. "He wants her to hear it first."

Julian froze.

Because that was exactly it.

Across town, Maya's world was still spinning.

"I don't know what to believe anymore," she admitted softly.

Daniel watched her carefully. "Then don't believe anything yet."

She frowned. "What?"

"Get the full story," he said. "All of it. Not just what people choose to tell you."

Maya looked down at her hands.

At the tremble she couldn't stop.

"I trusted him," she whispered.

Daniel's voice softened. "You still do."

That was the problem.

Her phone buzzed again.

This time, a name she recognized.

Julian.

She stared at it.

Hesitated.

Then answered.

"Hello?" her voice was barely steady.

"Maya," Julian Hart said, his voice strained. "Please… just let me explain."

She closed her eyes.

"You already did."

"No," he said. "Not everything."

Her heart pounded.

"Then say it," she replied. "Now."

There was a pause.

A long one.

Then—

"I didn't just agree to marry Clara because of my family," Julian said.

Maya's breath caught.

"Then why?" she asked.

Another pause.

This one heavier.

More dangerous.

"Because of you."

Everything inside her stilled.

"What does that even mean?" she whispered.

Julian's voice broke slightly.

"It means… I thought you were leaving me first."

Silence.

Complete.

Devastating.

Maya pulled the phone away slowly, her mind racing.

"That's not true," she said.

"I saw the messages," Julian continued. "Daniel. You. The way you talked about leaving… about wanting something different…"

Maya's eyes widened.

"You never asked me," she said.

"I was scared," he admitted.

"And so you decided for me?" she shot back.

"Yes," he said, his voice raw. "And I was wrong."

Tears streamed down her face now.

Not just from hurt.

But from realization.

From misunderstanding layered over misunderstanding.

"You didn't trust me," she said.

"I didn't trust that I was enough," he corrected.

That hit deeper than anything else.

Maya looked up at the sky, blinking through tears.

Everything felt fragile.

Complicated.

Real.

"I don't know what to do with this," she admitted.

Julian's voice softened.

"Then don't decide right now," he said. "Just… don't walk away without knowing all of me."

She didn't respond immediately.

Because for the first time…

She was standing at a crossroads.

Not between two people.

But between two truths.

The past that broke them.

And the possibility that maybe…

They had both been wrong.

Daniel watched her carefully.

"What did he say?" he asked.

Maya lowered the phone slowly.

Her voice was quiet.

"He told me the truth."

Daniel nodded once. "And?"

Maya's eyes filled again.

"I think… it just made everything more complicated."

And somewhere in the distance, back at the bookstore, Julian stood still—phone in hand, heart on edge.

Because this time, it wasn't just about losing her.

It was about whether she would still choose him…

Now that she knew everything.
