Chapter 64 – Noah's Story
The inn was loud.
Not because people were shouting.
Because people were happy.
Laughter echoed through the room.
Plates clinked together.
Someone near the fireplace was telling a terrible joke that somehow made everyone laugh anyway.
For most of the group, it was enjoyable.
For Noah, it was overwhelming.
---
He sat quietly at the table.
A bowl of hot soup rested in front of him.
Fresh bread.
Clean water.
Simple things.
Yet he stared at them as if they were treasures.
---
Kai noticed.
"Go ahead."
---
Noah looked up.
"What?"
---
"Eat."
---
For several seconds Noah didn't move.
Then he slowly picked up the spoon.
---
The first bite nearly made him cry.
---
Nobody commented.
Nobody stared.
Nobody asked questions.
---
They simply let him eat.
---
Eventually, after finishing almost everything on the table, Noah leaned back in his chair.
For the first time since arriving, some color had returned to his face.
---
"Better?" Kai asked.
---
Noah nodded.
"Much."
---
The old woman who managed the inn brought another loaf of bread.
"No charge."
---
Noah immediately shook his head.
"I can't—"
---
"You can."
She smiled.
"And you will."
---
The conversation drifted naturally after that.
Small things.
Funny things.
Stories from different worlds.
---
Cr-Hook told a story about accidentally cursing an entire mountain because someone stole his lunch.
---
The Warden spent ten minutes explaining why that was not an accident.
---
The First Anomaly laughed so hard it nearly fell out of its chair.
---
Even Noah found himself smiling.
---
Then the Forgotten One asked a simple question.
---
"So."
A pause.
"Where did you come from?"
---
The room became quieter.
---
Noah's smile faded.
---
Not completely.
Just enough.
---
Kai immediately noticed.
"You don't have to answer."
---
Noah stared at the table.
---
Then slowly shook his head.
---
"No."
A pause.
"I think I do."
---
Silence settled around the group.
---
Noah took a deep breath.
---
"My world is gone."
---
Nobody interrupted.
---
"My timeline collapsed three years ago."
---
Evetyl frowned.
"What happened?"
---
Noah laughed bitterly.
---
"Nobody knows."
---
The Eye immediately focused.
---
"Clarify."
---
Noah stared into the fire.
---
"One day the stars started disappearing."
---
The room became silent.
---
"At first we thought it was natural."
---
"A strange cosmic event."
---
"But then worlds started disappearing too."
---
"The sky became smaller."
---
"The future became shorter."
---
His hands tightened.
---
"And eventually..."
---
He swallowed.
---
"There was nothing left."
---
Silence.
---
The Warden slowly lowered its gaze.
---
The former Outer King looked troubled.
---
The First Thought began processing.
---
Noah continued.
---
"My family disappeared."
---
"My city disappeared."
---
"My world disappeared."
---
A pause.
---
"I was the last person left."
---
Nobody spoke.
---
Because there was nothing to say.
---
No words could repair something like that.
---
Noah looked toward the window.
---
"I spent years traveling."
---
"Looking for answers."
---
"Looking for survivors."
---
His voice became quieter.
---
"I never found anyone."
---
Evetyl felt her chest tighten.
---
She remembered loneliness.
---
Not exactly Noah's loneliness.
---
But enough.
---
Kai remained silent.
Listening.
---
Noah looked at him.
---
"Then I found a road."
---
"The black road."
---
"It appeared one night."
---
A small smile appeared.
---
"And somehow..."
---
"I knew where it wanted me to go."
---
Kai nodded.
---
"The roads know."
---
Noah laughed softly.
---
"Yeah."
---
"They do."
---
For several minutes nobody spoke.
---
The fire crackled gently.
---
Outside, Crosshaven remained alive with music and laughter.
---
Then the First Thought suddenly spoke.
---
"Analysis complete."
---
Everyone looked toward it.
---
The First Thought rarely interrupted.
---
"What did you find?" Evetyl asked.
---
The First Thought's expression remained unreadable.
---
Yet something about its voice felt different.
---
Concerned.
---
"Timeline collapse does not match known failure patterns."
---
The room became still.
---
Noah looked up.
---
"What does that mean?"
---
The First Thought answered immediately.
---
"It means your reality was not destroyed."
---
Silence.
---
Noah froze.
---
"What?"
---
The Eye focused.
---
The Warden straightened.
---
Even Kai stopped smiling.
---
The First Thought continued.
---
"Your timeline was removed."
---
Nobody moved.
---
The difference was enormous.
---
Destroyed meant an accident.
---
Removed meant intention.
---
Noah slowly stood.
---
"No."
---
His voice trembled.
---
"No, that's impossible."
---
The First Thought shook its head.
---
"It is not impossible."
---
A pause.
---
"It is precise."
---
The room became colder.
---
Outside, the city bells rang softly in the distance.
---
Noah stared at the First Thought.
---
Then asked the question everyone was thinking.
---
"Who would remove an entire timeline?"
---
The First Thought remained silent.
---
For the first time since arriving in Crosshaven...
Nobody had an answer.
---
Then—
the white flower in Evetyl's pocket suddenly glowed.
Brightly.
Violently.
---
Everyone turned toward it.
---
Far beneath existence—
the First Thing had felt something.
---
Not curiosity.
Not wonder.
---
Recognition.
---
The flower released a single glowing petal.
---
It drifted into the air.
---
Then transformed into three words.
---
Words written in light.
---
The room stared.
---
Noah stared.
---
Evetyl stared.
---
And slowly—
the words formed completely.
---
"I remember that."
---
Silence.
---
Absolute silence.
---
Because the First Thing remembered Noah's timeline.
---
And if the First Thing remembered it...
Then it had existed for a reason.
---
Somewhere beyond Crosshaven—
something hidden suddenly became aware that someone had started asking questions.
---
And for the first time in years...
The thing responsible for Noah's lost world became nervous.
